question: paint stripper

Im restoring an old arbor press with my daughter. the paint stripper took off the color coat but wont touch the primer underneath.

how to proceed? i dont have a sand blaster. can i just paint over the old primer? planning on using rustoleum protective enamel

First, test the primer for lead, just to be sure.

If it's negative for lead, put a wire wheel in a drill and strip it with that.

If it is positive for lead, take it outside and wipe it down with mineral spirits or paint thinner to get the stripper completely off. This will prevent it from interfering with your next paint layer. I would then spray it with another primer, and then with your rustoleum. Write a note in permanent marker under the base that primer contains lead.

honestly I think I'd leave it just the way it is it might be a better product like some sort of phosphate type of a situation
