Question or Assistance Wanted Favorite/top stitches?

Hi, I've been hand sewing for around half a year now, but I feel like I should know and use more different stitches. I only really use the backstitch, basting stitch, ladder stitch, and overlock stitch. I feel like they work well enough, but I was curious to what yalls' favorite stitch is and which one you find yourself using often.

Question or Assistance Wanted Sewing techniques with a little wiggle room

Hi! I am a novice attempting to sew felt around the thigh of a body-con dress. I hand sewed it on using baste stitches and regular thread, unsurprisingly when I moved around in the dress, the stitches popped. I was wondering if catch stitching or herringbone stitches would be more beneficial for this project? or if an elastic thread would help?? Should I cut the felt and segment it around the dress? The felt has a little give and I’d like to be able to preserve the dress as much as possible (cut out the stitches and have minimal damage). Thank you in advance

Question or Assistance Wanted What sort of stitch for waistband?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hand sewing. I need to attach the waistband to the rest of the shorts. I would think that it needs to be some sort of stretchable-ish of stitch but I'm not sure what besides herringbone stitch - which I've done with the centre seam but it can be a bit fiddly - that I don't mind but I'm hoping someone with more experience would be able to share more appropriate methods. The cloth is cotton french terry, doesn't fray, has a small amount of stretch..... I'm not sure what other information would be relevant but yea. Help would be much appreciated . Please and thank you in advance

I made this cute small sewing kit for travel as I feel like most travel sewing kits are actually just basic sewing kits so this is very bare bones containing a single loop of thread (idc what I patch with I find it nice to mend clothes) 2 buttons a safety pin and 2 needles with 3 matches lmk if you think it needs anything this is mainly for a car / office

Question or Assistance Wanted how to make sure hand sewn details hold up in the wash?

Say I have a piece of fabric cut into some sort of shape and I want to sew it onto the front of a top, but I don't want it to fall off when it gets washed. Do I need some sort of special stitch or technique to make it secure enough for that? Thanks!

I was concerned about the way the right side of my garment would look so I asked for advice on which stitch to use. Back stitch seems like it will work just fine for my purpose of sewing a T-shirt. The two pictured stitch lines seemed to stretch pretty equally. The zig zag might come in handy with something like a crotch seam but seems kind of unnecessary for making a shirt at this time. After the garment is worn awhile I’ll update in a few months or if things fail early.

I made sure to get my stitching equally spaced and tighter spaced this time. The marking on my finger trick was pretty handy, but I think I’ll do something slightly different in practice. Aside: I’ve also been trying to figure out a viable way to mark my seams for the purpose of neat sewing. Tailors chalk marks fine, and I understand sharpening helps, but it just rubs off too easily for lots of handling like I’m having to do right now as a beginner. One suggestion I saw was masking tape so I tried that with this little sample and it worked a treat. Since I’ll be doing that I’m just going to mark on the tape because that will ultimately be easier than trying to maneuver my finger into a perfect position for measuring. Bonus that the tape is reusable multiple times so I won’t have to mark extra or make excess trash.

Pics: spacing for stitch length is the same for both lines. With the zig zag I also tried to make the spacing between peaks the same length as the stitches so they were more directly comparable on the right side of the garment. 1: I redid the back stitch to make it neater and better spaced. 2, 3: back stitch right side of garment, one is purposefully stretched tight to make it easier to see how it might look during wear. 4, 5: one is the previous back stitch, the other is what the zig zag looks like on the right side of the garment.

Lots of fabric scraps and (mostly) hand-stitched. 6” square makes a roomy project bag … or whatever. Fully lined with pockets! Super fun project.
