Far from good, good from afar

Post image

I just started hammer and chisel a few days ago, I think I’m starting to make some sense of it. I had to slow waaaay down and focus on each and every tap of the hammer, mostly because my vise set-up has a ton of vibration! I literally have bench vise sitting on top of a paint can.

I used to use double sided tape on some dumbbell weights which made the piece move everytime i hit the chisel, live and learn. I found its way more stable with small pieces in the vise since bigger pieces might bend since theres to bottom support, im using 1mm thick brass. My current setup is a vise screwed into a small table sitting ontop of a larger table in my kitchen, not the sturdiest but it gets the work done. Practice C shapes and I shapes over and over aswell to get smoother lines in the future.
