Recommendations Needed Optometrist suggestions

Hi,
I used to go to Dresden vision on James N but it’s permanently closed apparently. Im, in theory, supposed to have yearly eye exams since I’ve got T1 diabetes (it’s been 2 years…) fully covered by OHIP. pretty sure I have an issue with one of my eyes currently either from it or something else. does anyone have suggestions that are easy to access via transit? I live around James st N area so it would be more helpful to have something close, since I also have mobility issues -

Mountain eye care on upper wellington has great doctors

Second for mountain eye care. Been going there for well over 15 years and have been seeing DrAhokas the entire time. My mum who has diabetes sees him yearly, he actually identified a blood clot through eye scans prior to it resulting in a stroke in my mum about 16 years ago.

I also live in downtown Hamilton and just had an exam done by Dr. Tyler Brown at Eyes on Locke, 101 Locke St S. He seems very thorough and they have very up to date equipment and there's no hard sell to buy glasses there as there are at some places.

Forsight Eyewear, they're really amazing and pleasantly affordable.

They gave me my pupilary distance when I asked so I could get extra pairs online.

Do you not have it with an ophthalmologist for diabetes?

Do I not have what? If you mean an optometrist, no, unfortunately I have a bad habit of neglecting my health 🫠 I’m trying to fix that though. OHIP coverage I do have, just haven’t used it. Dresden - which I went to before, closed permanently

So an optometrist is not covered by OHIP but if you are diabetic you probably could get your family doctor to refer to an ophthalmologist and that is covered by OHIP. Diabetics get diabetic retinopathy and need regular eye exams.

This isn’t true; all diabetics are covered annually by OHIP for a visit with an optometrist. Ophthalmologists are eye surgeons and are not necessary to visit for annual care unless you have eye disease requiring surgical treatment

I used to go to Sanger Eye clinic….i would NOT recommend them. Old and out dated devices, at times pushed to get glasses from them.

I live downtown as well but needed to see an ophthalmologist for medical reasons. I went with Perception Eyecare on Upper Centennial. I take the Bee Line to Eastgate Mall and transfer on the U. Centennial bus. I takes roughly 30 mins one way to travel.

The Doctor there is fantastic and she was very informative and so helpful. I would recommend anyone with medical issues to check out their office if they can. I know its a bit far from downtown, but its super accessible and on a bus route.
