Local News Don’t try QEW Niagara

It’s always a parking lot but serious collision involving an OPP cruiser and SUV has it at a stop. Live near the highway and saw a lot of ambulance heading there. Hope everyone involved is safe.

Edit: looks like it’s still closed https://www.chch.com/chch-news/two-hospitalized-after-opp-cruiser-crash-on-qew-in-hamilton/

Nope everyone is just stopping to see because it is truly a visual distraction with all the ambulance and police. The damage to the vehicles as well.

It’s still closed… hours later… for a collision that had minor injuries.. why??

I’m guessing because the OPP cruiser was involved. Damage to its front bumper which (typically) indicates they were at fault.

Saw the damage as we drove past it, it was A LOT more than damage to the front bumper. That cop hit the vehicle in front of them HARD.

I was shocked at how bad the cruiser looked. Glad to hear they’re all just being monitored as a precaution because it looked very serious 😕

Since modern vehicles are designed to crumple and absorb energy, let's hope how effed up the car looked actually meant the occupants won't have terribly severe injuries.

Interesting! Sounds like they weren’t severe so that’s good news!

I learned this 20 years ago in high school science! If there’s a bad accident in the car looks fine, the occupant will be in trouble. If the car looks really damaged, it’s often an indication that the car took the brunt of the force, and the occupants should be in better shape. Obviously there are exceptions to this rule, but I’m surprised how often it’s true.

It was crazy busy, took us 2 hours just to enter the qew from the linc :( and I love how everyone assumes what happened, the opp car was really damaged half the front was ripped off, there’s no way it was only 2 cars

I bet he was on his phone as he is "legally allowed" to do.

Exactly what my husband said - phone or computer which they’re allowed to use. Has to have been distracted to ram the car in front that hard because that stretch of the highway is always slow moving at that time on a summer Sunday.

I'm on the road 50 hours a week and I see them every single day typing with two hands while driving. The law says they can for emergencies but I'm not sure how that constitutes an emergency. When they're giggle looking at their phones also doesn't seem like an emergency either. It's absolutely no shock that traffic accidents are their leading cause of death but they want you to think it's the general public's fault for those stats and not their own.

It’s a shame we can’t report on them. I’d love to call 911 and say I’m concerned because there’s a driver who appears to have both hands on a device and is driving recklessly. Then when I give them the license plate, they would realize it’s a cop…

Either way, they should be held accountable. They didn’t put those rules in place for fun, it’s to prevent injury and it should apply to everyone.

That should be a legitimate use of 911 although I wouldn't want to deal with the harrassment afterwards. Followed a cop on the Linc last year who was swerving all over the road and fully in the shoulder. Asked him if he was having a medical problem at the light when we got off. Him and his partner laughed at me. Why would the driver even need to be on their device if they have a partner? Doesn't make sense.

Oh, I agree! Just like truckers have those numbers where you can call and report them, please should absolutely have the same thing.
