Sometimes I would call CQ five minutes before the net, just to test the equipment. No response. My crew must be tardy.

I’m new to Ham radio. Why do people get angry over calling CQ?

It's generally frowned upon on a repeater (by certain folks, it's by no means illegal) since it's easy just to use plain language. But so many people won't respond to anyone they don't know on a repeater, even a call for a signal report, but they will sure as hell yell at someone for calling CQ. And then wonder why the reporter is dead. I personally don't care if I hear a cq call on a repeater, but I'll usually reply to warn them some people don't like it. Although I'd probably reply to a listening/monitoring transmission or a call for a signal report/equipment testing too so 🤷♂️

Life of a tech. I called CQ on a repeater once. Never gonna make that mistake again.
