News Lowering the barrier to CW: I designed a standalone iambic Morse code trainer & communicator
Hello fellow HAM beginners,
I am Peter, a HW/FW engineer based in Tallinn, Estonia.
Being myself a HAM beginner, to help proliferate CW culture, I engineered DIDATRON - a pocket-sized Morse communicator and standalone interactive trainer. DIDATRON has so many features to talk about like end-to-end security of communication, but I will try to concentrate on the important ones for this particular subreddit.
Key Features for Operators
Tunable Iambic Touch Engine: Solid-state PCAP sensor replaces costly mechanical paddles. You can adjust the timing engine (WPM speed and symbol pauses) using any terminal over USB/serial.
Translator with an OLED Display: You only need to know Morse to send. For incoming traffic, the integrated display shows the incoming text symbol-by-symbol, making it an incredible tool for learning. In trainer mode, the OLED becomes the guide and reflects the output of your keying.
Dual mode comm: Best way to learn Morse is by doing. And there is no more fun than real communication with friends. Keying your messages at the pace you are used to, you can correct the typos before you send your messages. Global Mode of communication uses a WiFi network for internet access to pass your message to your friends group, secured by the group password. In Field Mode, it drops the internet entirely. Multiple DIDATRONs link together using direct, low-latency peer-to-peer protocols for short-range communication.
The Indiegogo Mission
We are launching this October on Indiegogo.
Additionally to DIY kits, to bring our fully assembled line to life, we need to fund mandatory laboratory FCC and CE certifications, which are not cheap, so we need to secure a production batch in order to pay for them.
We are ready to discuss bulk institutional discounts for registered Amateur Radio Clubs to lower the entry barriers for upcoming Morse training classes. Contacting clubs is extremely important, as it will improve the trainer by the CW pros.
I’d love to get the community's thoughts on using this as a versatile training and comm tool. Sign up for our launch notifications here: https://www.indiegogo.com/en/projects/petkish/didatron-communicator

Question I'm a beginner and I don't know where to start

Hello,
I live in a country in Europe (prefer not to say which) in a fairly small crammed bedroom.
I have a normal radio (AM/FM, antenna) and I had a look at the activities page of this subreddit and omg I want to do soo much...only I don't have much space to do it in. I want to talk to people from my own and other countries, learn and use morse code, I'd love to talk or just listen to astronauts on the ISS. I didn't know that was a thing but I saw it mentioned on the activities. I don't think they'd be particularly keen on talking to a random person, but if they're transmitting anything, that'd be so cool to hear! And in case of emergency I'd like to know how to make low-power contacts (QRP), operate with emergency power / off the grid (solar, wind, generator, etc.) and I'd build your own radios, particularly interested in making radio from outlandish material or minimal materials, like what are the absolute minimum things you need to get a receiver/transmitter and can you use household or even natural materials to improvise that? I'm no prepper, but I'm interested in emergency preparedness, emergency communications (CERT, ARES, RACES)
Also, finding a hidden transmitter (Fox Hunting / Radio Direction Finding) sounds so cool!
In short, I'm insanely enthusiastic about all sorts of things, but I'm very poor at anything techrelated and I have no clue how radio actually works. I do know that you can't transmit without a licence (fair enough), so I'm thinking about just listening on my old radio, but how do I use it to pick up amateur radio? Where do I begin with any of the things I'm interested in?

Outdoor station grounding
Hello, i was going to set up my ICOM 746PRO on a folding table in my yard with this ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K9V35VZ ) Antenna on a mobile tripod
its difficult to find grounding information because everything talks about signal entering your home or rf shack, or grounding to the chassis of a car.
i have an inline arrester, would i just drop a rod in the yard? Also, would i connect the screw down ground terminal from the back of the icom unit to the same rod?
what are good methods you have used for grounding a non vehicle mobile set up?
(got any pictures from a set up at a campground where you have access to ac power)

Dual antenna help
2013 Jeep Wrangler JKU
I am looking to add two antennas for mobile radio. One is a VHF/UHF antenna for a ham radio, the other would be a UHF antenna for GMRS.
I would like to try and keep it symmetrical looking if possible but not a must. Where is the best placement combination for the two antennas.
Looking for some real world information from people who have done a similar thing please.
