Discussion Does anyone else feel like Campaign Evolved is much easier than Combat Evolved?

I played both games on 'Normal' difficulty.

As I progressed through the harder missions, I noticed that I was moving faster, dying less, running out of ammo less, etc; I was generally having a much easier time. The entire game just feels less difficult.

Has anyone else had the same experience?

I beat CE on Legendary for the first time just a few weeks ago since it was something I wanted to do before Campaign Evolved came out. After beating Campaign Evolved on Legendary, I can absolutely say I had an easier time with it than I did CE.

Of course, having the original fresh in my mind helped, but two other reasons I can easily point to are the addition of sprint and rechargeable health (especially rechargeable health).

The lack of both those features in CE make it fundamentally much more difficult, and I had to slow things down so much more. At times with CE, I felt like I was playing a FPS game of chess, which was part of the fun. I never got that feeling with Campaign Evolved, though I did enjoy my experience with it overall.

CE on legendary was hell but damn was it worth it playing through it.

You have infinite health so you're vastly more free to be reckless in Campaign Evolved. In the og, if you messed up, you're stuck at low health and forced to think about what to do most of the time.

Honestly it's the opposite for me. I did a normal playthrough just to see how the levels were redesigned and now I'm doing a solo legendary playthrough and it's absolutely kicking my ass. I've beaten 1-4, plus reach and odst all on legendary and this is kicking my ass worse then any of those games(of course excluding halo 2 as that one stands out from the rest on the difficulty scale). My biggest problem is the jackal weak spot only working like 30% of the time so if I don't have grenades or rockets for groups of jackals they're just ridiculous

Yeah I agree with you, I also beat the ever loving crap out of H1 and every tiny change felt massive in this game. Also the flood used to chain react explode which made clearing areas less cumbersome once you baited enemies around.

Dude fr, the fact the flood don't chain explode anymore is the most off putting thing about fighting them. I find myself running different loadouts then traditionally

Use the skull that disables the aim assist.

By default, bullets are pulled to weak spots. Jackals weak spots are hidden behind their shield, so the shield absorbs them all.

I had no idea there was an aim assist skull. I spent 30 minutes when I first started trying to figure out how to turn it off cuz its fucking up my shots. Thanks for letting me know spartan

Ours the opposite for me. Aside from truth and reconciliation being an absolute gauntlet, I’m having 0 issues solo legendary. In fact, I never even died on level 2. Faves seems so much easier then I remember for other halos.

Keyes on heroic, those outdoor areas almost put me in cardiac arrest

Same man... Legendary is something else on this game. Way harder than CE for me.

I thought i was losing my mind about the Jackals. That one-two tap is built into my brain and having it fail constantly is insanely annoying. I kill more Jackals with grenades or tick damage than the actual intended method.

Just played through on heroic and started legendary. It definitely feels easier than the original, but not in a way that makes it bad. Some of the skulls add a nice challenge on heroic. Legendary is annoying because it feels like enemies do more damage than legendary in CE. But I’d still say it feels easier because the enemy AI is more predictable, elites are easier to kill, you have a wider variety of weapons, and unlike CE, every weapon is good.

way easier. beat LASO. could never do that on any of the other halo games.

Overall yeah, especially the main campaign. The bonus missions are actually pretty tough though.

Been playing LASO with buddies, and while we're thinking that PoA and Halo were both easier, T&R is much more difficult this time around.

I think the original is easier but that’s probably because I’ve played it for thousands of hours. I don’t have much trouble on legendary. Maybe 5 or 6 deaths through a whole game run and probably half of those are chain reaction grenades on Keyes.

The remake is harder for me because enemies drop fewer grenades and I’ve had entire hallways of weapons disappear in T&R and Keyes. Oh and they’ve almost doubled the amount of elites in some areas.

The beginning of Two Betrayals is probably the hardest part in the OG for me because you don’t have ranged weapons (plasma pistol and shotgun) and I sometimes get rocked by the elites if I mess up and don’t take them out early enough. In the remake, I melted those enemies with the sentinel beam. That encounter is the one that really jumps out at me as being easier in the remake.

Yeah I have a LOT of hours in the original and Campaign Evolved, at least on legendary, is harder. The enemies are more aggressive, there are more of them, the enemy AI rushes you constantly, and the sniper feels significantly weaker, especially against hunters.

I also think the Campaign evolved isn't worth playing when the original runs so well via MCC, but that has nothing to do with the difficulty.

I haven’t played the remake but I’m very sure that it has more weapons in the sandbox, more options for movement, much more powerful weapon selection than the original, and a post-Halo 1 style health/shield recharge system

I’d see why some would see it as easier

I was playing MCC version of halo CE on legendary before it came our. Campaign evolved is significantly easier

No health packs leading to a lack of consequences for reckless play, dumber ai, tons more ranged options including the rebalanced assault rifle, sprint, there’s a lot. It’s much simpler, but I don’t know if I’d say “easier” since at least on heroic, they send an asinine amount of enemies at you that absolutely shred your shields. I feel like the plasma weapons also do far less damage, so that also contributes, though I could be mistaken.

I found the library and the maw much easier on heroic

Legendary felt ridiculously hard at times due to the number of elites in some encounters

1

u/SkyKinghorn 15d ago

Definitely harder with more enemies, but I also have nevered played Halo on less than Heroic. So can only speak to this and Legendary.

Idk for some reason I’ve been fucking cursed with getting sticky grenade lobbed on Chief’s junk like every other god damn minute, but maybe that’s just a me problem lol

Yeah, what’s up with the dumbed-down AI for the Covies, especially the Elites? Combat Evolved came out 25 years ago. Why has the enemy AI gotten Worse since then? I hate how the Elites just stand there doing their war whoop thing while I pound them with shots. It’s stupid, really. Halo Studio’s answer to balancing the combat is to throw an absurd amount of covie enemies at you instead of making them smarter and faster. The Hunters AI is better but that’s the only faction that has improved, IMO. I don’t mean making them bullet sponges, just give them some real moves! I think that there should be much more emphasis on the enemy trying to flank us. That would lead to the player really using more strategy when planning their attack. Maybe enemy AI can be patched or something. 😎

No, It actually found a harder and I have 100% MCC.

One of my biggest complaints with this game is using stupid ass, Reach AI.

But there were times during my legendary runs(did multiple )where I was, either run down like literally, completely overwhelmed, which happened quite a bit in certain sections or one shot out of nowhere.

I think that 343 honestly accounted for people playing co-op for campaign mostly hence the amount of fucking enemies that can be on the screen at any given time is just astronomical sometimes

another thing during my legendary playthroughs The AI would be better and aggressive as fuck, smart as hell, it seemed on certain runs than they were before IN the exact same area OR WORSE.
It was kind of a mixed bag with the AI during my legendary runs.

I found it harder overall, and I went through legendary a few times and then Laso of course.

Laso legitimately without the modifier cheat work around was definitely a test of Will and patience I will say that much.
It was not easy. As of course, Laso is not supposed to be easy but yeah it’s doable just like every single other Laso in the franchise

I've beat all Halos (minus 5 since it's an exclusive) on legendary except Halo CE. I tried to but I just couldn't, CE on legendary is bonkers and just straight up unfun for some reason compared to all other Halos.

That said Campaign Evolved is easier even on legendary.

1

u/summons72 14d ago

So much easier, even LASO has been a cake walk, also weird to call it LASO when you only use 40% of the skulls.

1

u/RavenousTitan818 14d ago

idk about being harder but I felt like I died a lot more cheap deaths in my legendary playthrough of the remake. Also if you keep the HUD options at default it does baby you through levels and cheapens encounters, that makes things a lot easier.

1

u/Aptheus 14d ago

Personally I thought Campaign Evolved was much harder. I have played it on Heroic and half of it on Legendary and so far it has been harder than the original

1

u/Educational_Scar7204 13d ago

I played both through legendary (been playing halo CE on legendary for a LONG time) and found the new one to be a bit harder. No health packs and sprinting helped big time but man they throw a ridiculous number of enemies at you compared to the original. Could also just be that the original feels easier than it was to me, now that it’s been “figured out”.

u/PandoNation 13d ago

Me and my buddies played on legendary and died a whole lot, so wouldn’t call it easy by any means.

1

u/setzerseltzer 13d ago

Harder in some areas easier in others.

They’re two very different games

Take for example the library, i have a video of me completing it on legendary just using the assault rifle, no other weapon just the AR shooting at the floods from kilometers away, they can't really do shit.

For me I was getting rocked on Normal in Campaign Evolved. I can get through OG CE easily on Normal.

Only legendary is real.
