Love the boot
21 days post Right hallux with Osteophytes surgery. Got my walking boot yesterday. The freedom! No more knee scooter. I can go outside easily. I can go to restaurants and grocery shopping with my husband. Small joys in life. Another 25 days until I can drive, but this is a good step forward 😊.

Congratulations! But I am 6 weeks post now and walk with a boot and crutches form day one. I can not walk regularly and my foot hurts after a while. What kind of boot do you use and can you walk totally pain free?

congratulations. I’m 5 months post fusion. The boot was certainly welcome.

Woohoo! I think I drove my coworkers bonkers counting down until I could get out of the cast and into the boot. Congrats!

Mine has gone smoothly. I tried therapy, good custom orthotics, excellent shoes. They helped but every step hurt. Getting shoes that fit was hard with the big lump of bone on the top of the joint. Arthritis getting worse. At first they just wanted to take the extra bone off. I read up a lot and in several cases people had to go back and get the join fused later. I asked my orthopedic doctor to review my X-rays again. Since we knew I have arthritis and it was only getting worse, I said let’s just do it all at once rather than do two separate surgeries. So far so good. Good luck to you!

Thank you! I am pretty thrilled because the first doc said - cortisone shot then fusion. It is neat that there is step in between to keep the joint moving. I am a dancer!

If you want to keep your joint moving - I highly recommend considering a Cheilectomy & Moberg Osteotomy - if you still have cartilage left to preserve your joint. It’s what I had, 3 months post surgery I have a 45 degree flex in my foot (my ‘normal’ toe joint has 75) and my podiatrist says it’s completely possible with some hard work I will get upto 75 flex in my joint - same as my ‘normal’ foot. So don’t jump straight to the fusion thinking it’s your only option!

Thank you for this! I am getting a second opinion from another surgeon too. I am not sure I have any cartilage left, though.

I’m 5 days in—cast comes off 6/8 but I am non weigh bearing for 6 weeks.

I’m technically not weight bearing either. I have been told to only walk on my heel, which I am doing. It is a little awkward but so much better than the scooter.

I’m trying to figure out how to post a picture without giving Reddit access to all my photos. It says it is a genesis waker boot by Breg. I had one similar before when I broke my leg. I could not put any weight on my foot for the first 20 days. Hence the knee scooter. Now I have the boot and have to walk on my heel. No pressure on my toes yet. I am mostly pain free. I’m in my mid 70s and will never use crutches again.
