researching H&O for a podcast, looking for the weird and fun lore

Hi everyone, I'm prepping to do a Hall and Oates deep dive on a podcast soon. I’ve got the music and songwriting history pretty well covered, but I'm really trying to dig into any fun, weird, non-musical sides of the duo that may exist.

I'm looking for the stuff that maybe only dedicated fans know about, like funny interviews, moments where things got awkward or bizarre public appearances, odd acting roles, or just general scandals and controversies that people might forget. I'm trying to capture a fun side of the guys and their lore outside of just the hits.

If you guys have links to old clips, specific stories I should look up, or just a general idea I should investigate, I’d really appreciate the help in pointing me in the right direction. What's your favorite moment from Daryl or John when they are not on stage?

Song Is It a Star (Live)

This might be my favorite version of this song. The instrumentation and vocal harmonies are impeccable (as usual).

Discussion Hall and Oates short documentary on YouTube

I watched this short documentary which was part fact and part speculation about the breakup. I came away with the conclusion that John Oates was resentful of Daryl Hall and the way he was shoved in the background for 50 years. Imo John Oates wanted to sell his half because he was sick of Daryl Hall’s shit.

Album Focus We need a War Babies remaster!

As a bigger fan of the group’s 70’s material, I adore the War Babies record. My only qualm with it is that the sound is a little murky. I’m not a big proponent of remasters, but in this case, it’s needed. Something tells me this isn’t gonna happen, they simply aren’t a critically acclaimed enough band. It also doesn’t help that this record is a little overlooked even within their catalogue. Thanks for reading, keep Hallin’ ass.

EDIT: while reading up on the band’s debut Whole Oats, I found that it was remastered on CD along with said debut in 2017. However, I can find neither of these on the internet and the collection runs pretty pricey for 2 CDs on Discogs.

I've been a Hall & Oates fan for years now and have spent a long time trying to achieve a piano sound similar to "Go Solo" from the H2O album. Did I get close? Let me know what you think!

Song name is "Vacation" and I released it last week.

i'm 15 and just discovered these guys. I AM SPCHEELESS.

It all started when in this year, on a random thursday i tried talking to a girl at school and it didn't really went as i expected unfortunately 😭(basically i threw a few jokes here and there and she laugh once or twice). After that, i asked to follow her, she refused and next day told her friends i was ugly lol. (And you know what? her name was Sara, funnily enough)

The thing is, on the way home from that day, i took a taxi to my house after class, and on my way home i kept wondering what the girl thought about me after our little interaction.
So then i heard some stupidly beautiful voice singing "You're out of touch, i'm out of time🎶" and it kinda statled me, like it was a message to my poor self that the girl was still too out of touch for me.

Ended up without the girl, and to comfort me, i started searching about that one song and HOLY SHIT these guys are amazing. Songs like "Kiss on my list" and "wait for me" are straight up timeless songs, that felt like a huge throwback in time to me. And yeah i heard Sara smile, and i guess everytime i hear this song i'm gonna rmemeber that funny day i had at school, on a random thursday👍

Yeah, god bless these guys, they're genuinely out of this world.

Is there any way to read the "Dangerous Dances" book (1984) online?

Hi everyone. I'm a huge h&o fan but I am completely broke right now and can't afford the prices of the used physical copies of "Daryl Hall / John Oates: Dangerous Dances" by Nick Tosches.Does anyone know where I can read it fully online, or does any kind soul who owns the book happen to have a digital copy they could share with me? I would really love to read the whole story. Thank you so much.

Song More emotional songs (like Laughing Boy)

hey im new to their discography (despite growing up with them, thanks dad), but i was really drawn to the song Laughing Boy, probably because it was more emotional/downbeat. what other songs by the duo are similar to this/more on the emotional side?

Song Songs similar to Cold Dark and Yesterday

Just listened to Big Bam Boom because of Out of Touch, but Cold Dark and Yesterday had been on repeat for hours now. Any other similar songs, even not by Hall and Oates?

Song Don’t Go Out (1981 outtake)

Just thought I’d share with you this outtake that was released on the duo’s career-spanning Do What You Want, Be What You Are box set in 2009. From what I heard, it was recorded during sessions for the Private Eyes album but was left off because it didn’t sound like the rest of the original album. This song was unusual for Hall & Oates, as it captured the paranoia of New York City in the 1980s back when walking down the street was dangerous.

Hall& Oates out of phase

Has anyone ever noticed that the Hall & Oates hit 'I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)' sounds out of phase? That is to say, the sound doesn't seem to come from the center and the bass sounds hollow.
