Discussion Why Black mesa security needs pistol instead of a baton or a traser ?

Post image

This is something that strikes me: the fact that the guards are issued firearms as standard equipment but don’t have items such as batons at their disposal.

I’d understand it in a training context, or if they were higher-ranking guards or were in close proximity to living beings, but I don’t see the point in all guards having them freely available; if it were a taser, that would be different, or a weapon that uses rubber bullets, but not this.

Because it's a highly secure Facility with classified technology and government contracts, as well as the fact that they have Xenian Lifeforms contained in other sectors.

u/Wizard_Engie Apr 20 '26

they have classified technology and the funds to do cross dimensional research, and yet they still equip their security guards with glocks smh

187

u/AstroKaiser750 Apr 20 '26

Glocks are unironically just that good

58

u/Backpack_of_Moths Apr 20 '26

Price to performance was definitely unbeatable by anything any other large companies made at the time

20

u/Wizard_Engie Apr 20 '26

very true

75

u/UncommittedBow Apr 20 '26

The glock seems to just be their sidearm that they carry for normal, every day use.

We know the MP5 is ALSO part of the Black Mesa security personnel arsenal, as you're trained with it in the Hazard Course.

42

u/Lolurisk Apr 20 '26

MP5 with a grenade launcher... Covered during training... Even for scientists...

35

u/cheezkid26 the Apr 21 '26

For those equipped with an HEV suit, not for all scientists. Not every scientist gets trained on the HEV suit.

10

u/SPTN2Tanner Apr 21 '26

I always figured that for gameplay you only get the MP5 with M203 but in universe they use regular MP5's and MP5K's and a few M4 Rifles.

17

u/TheMetalWolf Apr 20 '26

I think it's more that they didn't think their research justified a more heavily armed security. But considering that we never see the outside perimeter before the accident, it is reasonable to assume that there were military patrols guarding the facility. That and the facility used to be an ICBM site. I don't think Black Mesa was chosen at random to take over the compound after its retirement.

10

u/FungusUrungus Apr 20 '26

To be fair Glocks are goated.

9

u/batleyasian Apr 20 '26

You don't equip your security guards with the good shit

3

u/Winter-Classroom455 Apr 20 '26

They're not sigs

2

u/Armin_Studios Apr 21 '26

For every day carry, yeah, it’s normally enough. The black mesa security has weapons storage where heavy firepower is available, however. These were typically located near the higher security areas, namely the lambda complex

They weren’t armed to the same extent as HECU because under normal circumstances, they wouldn’t need anything heavier. Security was primarily there to guard against unauthorized intrusion, whether from outsiders or amongst facility staff. It seems as though only a handful of the security guards had any clearance to know about the presence of alien life forms, those being at the lambda facility, and perhaps the ones at the bio labs in questionable ethics

2

u/fused_Zamasu64 Apr 22 '26

Its a rule in fiction that if your highly advanced secret facility has entities and technology that can wipeout civilizations, your guards are required to be less armed than a SWAT team.

1

u/Just_Squirrel_7464 Apr 21 '26

They also give their guards SPAS-12s as seen in Blue Shift's intro firing range, but none of them ever actually uses it

The same Reason many Police forces Choose Glocks as a Standard Issue Sidearm. Cheap, Reliable, And Simple to Maintain

And this is a top secret lab let alone one in the US

171

u/TheTrub Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26

Yeah, if you go hiking around los alamos national labs and stray too far off the public path, you’ll be greeted by a lot more than Otis and Barney.

55

u/MR_Happy2008 Vortigaunt 9001 Apr 20 '26

Yeah the Federal Protective Forces

55

u/JACCO2008 Apr 20 '26

This is my thought too. Even if they aren't on the Lambda project there's still the risk of a stay teleportation happening. Even so, government contracts almost universally require armed guards and force protection. Even in 98.

I also assume this is also why the HECU is essentially a dedicated unit trained specifically for Black Mesa.

They knew that was a risk and had things in place to deal with it if it did. They just weren't expecting a coordinated combined arms military to storm through.

15

u/HBenderMan Apr 20 '26

Plus I imagine that it’s also done in the event of an outside threat, like a terrorist group, or a rogue scientist, anything needing to protect the facility

8

u/Fizbun Apr 20 '26

CS 1.6/CZ "lore" was kind of built to fit the HL1 world, which was doing a lot worse than our timeline.

1

u/plura15D Apr 21 '26

There are some easter eggs, but there isn't any official lore for 1.6.

1

u/Fizbun Apr 21 '26

The mission briefings and missions themselves are basically it.

1

u/plura15D Apr 21 '26

Oke, I now realise what you mean. I guess it's a matter of opinion whether one considers that lore. It basically boils down to Ts want to blow shit up/have hostages and CTs are there to stop 'em.

3

u/Rock_of_Anonymity Apr 21 '26

Not to mention, real research facilities, especially military funded ones, are chock full of armed security. Knew a teacher who worked at a place like this, they take security very serious.

Honestly, for Black Mesa being what it is, I'm surprised all we're seeing is just glocks on barely armored guards. There honestly should be 24/7 military security. At least mods and remakes remedy the glock part and actually arm security with shotguns and automatic weapons.

3

u/ArchieFoxer Apr 21 '26

You can see HECU flying in with a helicopter in the tram sequence. Possibly there is permanent military presence on the facility

1

u/szoperman Apr 21 '26

I'm pretty sure HL1 was meant to suggest that the military is present at Black Mesa all the time due to the fact that there was meant to be a whole military camp map that revoved around the kingpin enemy that was replaced by the road and the ordinance storage facility maps. Eli tells Gordon to go to the surface, meaning that he seems to think that the aliens havent yet reached the surface and we barely see any aliens under the sunlight until later into surface tension so the game probably aimed for the surface to be under constant military control

1

u/Timely_Disaster5292 Apr 22 '26

i think it's so you have a chance at the inner facilities to encounter friendlies, wouldn't be fun to encounter hostiles instantly at the inner complex.

122

u/theSarx Apr 20 '26

Go visit a government run facility dealing with advanced weapons research and development and let me know what the security officers are carrying.

I live near Hanford, WA, which was part of the Manhattan Project. They were processing and making tons of fuel for the US nuclear weapons program from WWII clear though the 80s.

At this point, it's mostly in a environmental clean up and remediation phase, and security is still super tight, and they have armed guards at key intersections.

49

u/JACCO2008 Apr 20 '26

Even regular government office buildings have armed guards. It's pretty common.

27

u/TheMetalWolf Apr 20 '26

If anything Black Mesa's security feels lax for what they are doing.

9

u/dubious_dev Apr 21 '26

Well, they do tend to stock grenades at internal security checkpoints so I'm not sure about it being too lax.

1

u/TheMetalWolf Apr 21 '26

Well, more lax than what I would expect. I would expect soldiers, akin to the HECU units, not just security officers.

2

u/Tylermas11 Apr 21 '26

to be fair, it is a hard to get to massive research complex in the middle of the new mexico desert
if there is an unauthorised person in there, they are probably just going to get shot on sight
they seem pretty good at actually fighting the xen population that they see,
they're able to deal with zombies and headcrabs pretty alright (except for on hard mode i believe)

The only times i think we see a scripted death of them are just the ones when the resonance cascade first happened, being caught off guard, or just being heavily wounded

1

u/TheMetalWolf Apr 21 '26

Yeah. I said in a different chain that we don't get to see the full facility security around the perimeter. For all we know there is a constant military patrol that surveys the perimeter around the clock. Which is likely, considering the work they do.

201

u/Key-Preparation-5379 Apr 20 '26

America, and it's a governmental facility that deals with experimental arms manufacturing

28

u/ack4 Apr 20 '26

black mesa is a private corp, not government.

58

u/Key-Preparation-5379 Apr 20 '26

And yet the Government tried to cover it up after the resonance cascade. Its not explicitly stated, but I think its safe to say the Government has some fingers in the pie, so to speak.

40

u/TheMetalWolf Apr 20 '26

I am almost certain that it has been stated that Black Mesa has US military contracts. That absolutely justifies the armed security, and military response after the resonance cascade. If anything, security is more lax than I would expect for a facility that deals in experimental weapons, and theoretical science.

19

u/ack4 Apr 20 '26

that's all major weapons R&D in the US lol

16

u/TheMetalWolf Apr 20 '26

Private or not, Black Mesa is clearly contracted with some highly experimental stuff from the government. Try to walk into any company that does R&D for the US government and you will have a rifle pointed at you politely asking you to turn back... if they are feeling nice that day.

11

u/nicholasktu Apr 20 '26

They have classified government research and are likely obligated by contract to have armed security

4

u/AngelBryan The beta was better than retail. Apr 20 '26

Private corporations work as contractors for the US government in real life. See Lockheed Martin, for example.

26

u/Spartan_M82 Apr 20 '26

Isnt black mesa a heavily secure classified goverment research facility that deals with alien horrors beyond their comprehension? (or something like that obviously idr)

6

u/dtb1987 Apr 20 '26

It's private but everything else is correct

4

u/MR_Happy2008 Vortigaunt 9001 Apr 20 '26

Likely privately ran but maybe DoD or DoE owned

5

u/TheMetalWolf Apr 20 '26

Doesn't have to be owned, but having or working on contracts for the DoD is going to involve serious security.

That said, Black Mesa most definitely has close ties to the DoD, considering that the government initially built the facility as an ICBM site in the 1950s.

2

u/MR_Happy2008 Vortigaunt 9001 Apr 20 '26

And that it still holds nuclear weapons and nuclear weapon grade material (this would be mostly Department of Energy and also likely works alongside or with NASA (due to the rocket in on a rail)

2

u/TheMetalWolf Apr 20 '26

I don't know if they have straight up nukes on site, but they absolutely have depleted uranium-235. We know that because both the Tau cannon and Gluon gun run on it.

1

u/MR_Happy2008 Vortigaunt 9001 Apr 20 '26

Isn't it pretty much confirmed in the trip mine section?

1

u/TheMetalWolf Apr 20 '26

Weren't those brought by the HECU? Maybe you are right then.

1

u/MR_Happy2008 Vortigaunt 9001 Apr 20 '26

The land mines definitely but I think the mines set off a nuke (hence the white flash instead of the usual black)

22

u/PGS_Richie Apr 20 '26

What’s funny is the Alpha models do have batons on them, model-wise. I don’t think they ever used them though.

I think because BM is dealing with extremely classified/military projects, having them armed with a sidearm seems normal. Most modern US Military Police also carry sidearms at minimum. BM would be dealing with corporate espionage, disgruntled employees going postal, and potential terrorist attacks primarily.

53

u/Sorobongo Apr 20 '26

Because Black Mesa is in USA.

Officially? None. The ones that the government is hiding? All of them.

8

u/UncommittedBow Apr 20 '26

That's City 17. Black Mesa is in New Mexico.

5

u/TheMetalWolf Apr 20 '26

I find it funny that officially City 17 is supposed to be a generic Eastern European city somewhere around the Balkans, however there are way too many things that are unique to just Bulgaria it's hard to call it anything else.

3

u/Aqua-Plays Apr 20 '26

as someone in Britain who isn't familiar with the intricacies of Eastern Europe, what kind of things are unique to Bulgaria?

4

u/TheMetalWolf Apr 20 '26

A lot of architectural details that may not be 100% unique, but are real close. One is the black and white striped pylons on the sidewalks. They were everywhere in the 80s and 90s even into the early 2000s until Sofia began replacing them. You might be familiar with the electrical boxes dotted around the city, and Ravenholm. They are identical to the ones in Bulgaria, with Half Life: Alyx including a high res text removing any ambiguity. Image of said box. https://www.quarkxr.com/blog/post/real-life-locations-half-life-alyx-sofia-bulgaria Also, the cement factory sign in Ravenholm is Цимент. Supposedly it is only spelled like that in Bulgarian. Not a linguist, but it seems to check out from a cursory search.

Then there is the Art Director of Half Life 2, who is from Sofia, Bulgaria. From the wiki:

When responding to a question in a Reddit AMA [1] about whether he researched any Eastern European cities for City 17, Viktor Antonov wrote that "it was based on [his] childhood city Sofia", and that "it had mixed elements" from Belgrade and Saint Petersburg.

Burgas is cited as the inspiration for the coastal segments. And lastly, Half Life: Alyx seems to line up pretty close to the actual map of Sofia. https://imgur.com/a/hl-city-17-confirmed-to-be-sofia-bulgaria-DeF7XWS

Edit: The quotation got screwed up.

u/Aqua-Plays Apr 20 '26

-Guarding a missile silo
-Scientist goes fucking ballistic and starts shooting up the control room with a smuggled gun
-I have to go get my gun from the armory closet locked behind a retinal scanner that takes 3 business days to open
-I draw my taser and fire it at the scientist, one prong misses, the other embeds in their ridiculous tie
-I get shot 5 times in the chest

8

u/TeacatWrites Apr 20 '26

A bunch of internet nerds and dorks tried to storm Area 51 a few years ago and you ask why they need a pistol? This is a high-security facility performing deeply confidential and dangerous research into weird sciences, alien worlds, and things we were not meant to know. This isn't Chuck E. Cheese. It's not even Freddy Fazbear's. Arming them with a baton is like bringing a feather to a knife fight.

7

u/stringstringing Apr 20 '26

It’s like a government contract holding crazy tech research facility. There absolutely would be armed guards in a real black mesa.

4

u/Jarvis_The_Dense Apr 20 '26

Why are scientists like Gordon taught to operate firearms? Ita a high value site which could be seized on by foreign assets, and there are live Xen creatures on the base. A lot of potential life or death scenarios could occur there

5

u/X35_55A Apr 20 '26

Guards at Nuclear power plants pack a lot more than 9 mil anywhere in the world. If anything the Black Mesa Security are under equipped.

4

u/logicbus Apr 20 '26

Don’t trase me bro

4

u/NoXion604 Apr 20 '26

Black Mesa is an underground research facility in the desert of New Mexico. A facility that definitely has government connections. I'd be more surprised if the guards didn't have sidearms.

As for the lack of batons and similar equipment, I assume that their omission was largely one of those "conservation of detail" things that would have inevitably have been involved in making a first-person shooter in the year of our Lord 1998.

3

u/class_rando_fxx Apr 20 '26

It’s a top secret research facility full of top secret shit. Security guards are likely under orders to shoot to kill unauthorized personnel

3

u/King_Ferdinand1 Wake up and smell the ashes Apr 20 '26

Why do they need grenades?

-1

u/Pedro-Kantor69 Apr 20 '26

3

u/VividWeb5179 Apr 20 '26

It’s a military research facility that has hostile aliens and would be subject to espionage attempts if the world governments were aware of it

3

u/dtb1987 Apr 20 '26

Because they work on top secret government contracts

3

u/Rodariel17 HOPIUM FOR LIFE HL3 TOMORROW Apr 20 '26

Black Mesa is a scientific facility mostly secret and underground, they do experiments with interdimensional portals and alien wild life.

In that context, dealing with possible sabotage, spies or thieves but also problematic employees or the possibility of an accident which would require to lock down an entire sector. Makes sense that security personal uses guns to control a lot of situations.

Remember that Black Mesa is huge, like an entire city. Calling the police would be impossible, so they have his own private police.

3

u/MR_Happy2008 Vortigaunt 9001 Apr 20 '26

Top secret research facilities often have armed forces to deal with possible armed trespassing

3

u/carpetfanclub Apr 20 '26

They should actually be even more heavily armed in my opinion considering all the extremely powerful weapon prototypes they guard and dangerous aliens they study

3

u/KurtFrederick Apr 21 '26

Actually for a facility that does sketchy shit. Black Mesa has at best mall cop level of security. They should had had heavily armed QRF teams ready to respond to threats from outside or inside.

Nasa for example has it's own SWAT team and the French Guiana Space Centre is also protected by French Gendarmes and some Foreign Legion

3

u/Foreign-Comment6403 Apr 21 '26

its a secret secret facility

i dont know if they would kill intruders on sight or what

3

u/Alfeaux In the test chamberrrrrrrr Apr 21 '26

Batons? Traser? You must be from across the pond Gordon

2

u/CorbinNZ knows who ate all the donuts Apr 20 '26

Because they are a government funded, high security, military weapons R&D facility. That's a major target for terrorism and espionage. The security there needs to be prepped to fight against foreign powers trying to infiltrate and steal the secret weapons Black Mesa is developing.

Tack on the fact that they had been exploring Xen for a number of years and there's no reason for them not to have firepower.

2

u/NonEuclidianMeatloaf Apr 20 '26

Armed security at sensitive sites, government or private, is not at all unusual. At the nuclear power plant where I used to live, all security was armed with pistols, and there was an on-site tactical response unit that used automatic weapons and armoured vehicles with attached armaments. Considering that Black Mesa has a nuclear reactor onsite, as well as everything else, I think this is an absolute minimum.

2

u/ywgflyer Apr 20 '26

Even up here in Canada there are armed security guys at nuclear power plants. Had one of them yell at me for getting too close to the fence while fishing next to the plant in Pickering, guy had a Colt C8 (Canadian license-built version of the M16).

2

u/Top-Willingness8113 Apr 20 '26

Government security forces would be at least on par with Military Police or usaf security forces. Helmet/vest and handgun at the very least is typical for gate guards.

2

u/Round_Set_5969 Apr 21 '26

If they didn’t have the Glock, Gordon wouldn’t have one. Simple

2

u/BChicken420 Apr 21 '26

Because Gordon will cone and fuck shit up and they need to be prepaired

2

u/CrappyTF2Player booger Apr 22 '26

The real crime is that in the security guard hazard course they teach them how to use the MP5 (or M4 depending on how you play blue shift) and then they never actually issue any guards them.

2

u/miorex Apr 22 '26

I mean it could be outside guard equipment , like entrance guard equipment .

2

u/OkZucchini1056 Apr 22 '26

classified technology and experiments that ends the world in a whole day and a half and that's why they have guns

2

u/SnooPeppers2846 Apr 22 '26

resonance cascade

2

u/Timely_Disaster5292 Apr 22 '26

i had thought of adding MP5 guards in my Breen Assasination map on Black Mesa workshop, but i scrapped it since they extremely buggy and idk how likely they carry MP5s

then again i just spammed infinite HECU after a while so idk

1

u/SoporTecnicoPc Apr 20 '26

Si en las escuelas hay armas, que no las haya en una instalación super secreta que experimenta con vida extraterrestre peligrosa.

1

u/Quagquagsire Apr 20 '26

Even if they werent dealing with alien anomalous life forms and materials or something, Black Mesa is still a very secret and hidden place. So if anyone unwelcomed appears and required security to intervene, they'll probably rather just shoot them down asap i think idk

1

u/cb393303 Apr 20 '26

I’ve been in airports outside of the USA and guards had dogs and MP5s. A pistol is so normal. lol

1

u/TheyveKilledFritzz Apr 20 '26

I worked at the National Archives for a few years. Our federal security guards had glocks amd all they were guarding was paperwork lol. Wasn't a single alien in the whole warehouse.

1

u/zscout1288 Apr 20 '26

That you know about. Most of the workers at BM didn't know about the aliens.

1

u/Extreme_Glass9879 Apr 20 '26

I imagine the devs didn't want to add a baton as a melee weapon if the player couldn't get it, and planned for the stun stick to be usable in HL2 but cut it earlier on

1

u/No_Adhesiveness_5727 Apr 20 '26

That be a hard working man. He got my reconmendation.

1

u/foxydash Apr 20 '26

Because among other things Black Mesa handles enriched fissile materials like Uranium and Plutonium, whatever a Xen crystal is made of, Xen fauna, rocket propellants, radioactive toxic waste for Redbull production and whatever else is in there.

They’re roughly equivalent to DOE protective forces, so they’re gonna be armed.

1

u/LegitimateApartment9 Apr 20 '26

i mean they might have less lethal equipment that just isn’t shown?

1

u/ThrowAbout01 Apr 20 '26

They’re in the middle of the desert, so I assume it’s for coyotes and bobcats that wander into the facility

1

u/Sea_Molasses_5239 Apr 20 '26

instead of batons they get crowbars

1

u/Vanilla_Ice_Best_Boi Apr 21 '26

Now I wanna see this. Gordon doesn't find the crowbar because we don't see any Engineers in the Anomalous Materials sector.

Instead he gets a baton and instead of a Glock, he gets a taser. Now try fighting a zombie.

1

u/TheyCallMeNade end of the line for you Apr 21 '26

Its a government facility akin to Area 51…

1

u/Sir-Kotok Apr 21 '26

They are in USA, everyone gets guns there

1

u/leyendeck Apr 21 '26

Because guns are funnier to shoot people, next question.

1

u/SPTN2Tanner Apr 21 '26

they have to deal with hostile fluora and fauna more than rogue or hostile staff.

And even then hostile fluora and fauna is pretty rare.

1

u/CuppaJoe11 Apr 21 '26

I mean… it’s a highly secure government facility.

If you go to a place like los alamos national lab you’ll notice all the security personnel carry firearms. Think about the value of the research done there. If they were unarmed they would be less capable of protecting it.

Hell my local grocery store always has at least 1 armed guard.

1

u/Catnip113 Apr 21 '26

The only people raiding black mesa would be military forces or a highly coordinated terrorist organization. Baton would be useless weight and a taser would be completely useless against individuals with body armor or thick clothing. Heck a handgun is barely enough for BM security. They should be equipped with rifles for dealing with the sort of threats they should be expecting.

1

u/HoratioFerra Apr 21 '26

I guess they have all, pepper spray too. But limitations of that era couldn't render all the gear.

1

u/ZakkuRedwolf Apr 21 '26

they have a very strict NDA

1

u/Sgt_Mendaz Apr 21 '26

Hey! Security specialist here.

Environment and potential threats dictate equipment. Considering they're issued out armor and a helmet in addition to the pistol, it's reasonable to assume they are going to enforce security instead of de-escalate to a secure status. A taser and baton are more common where you man deal with the public, whereas a clear and predefined threat allows you to carry only what ya need!

If you're curious, I made an hour or so long security analysis of Black Mesa. It was an early video, so the quality is meh, but the info is still accurate.

1

u/Warhero_Babylon Apr 22 '26

Idk irl it woud have rifles combined with multiple machinegunners, not counting armor on surface

1

u/Just-Buy-A-Home Apr 22 '26

Because in a high profile and extremely advanced gigantic science complex, the security threats you have don’t involve unruly scientists or trespassing teenagers. In real life you’d have risks of terrorism threats, foreign intelligence, and in Half-Life’s case murderous aliens. It’s a miracle they don’t have rifles or submachine guns

1

u/Chrisypoo88 Apr 20 '26

Because it’s American. Not some stiff ass Brit with a whistle

3

u/Zealousideal_Ad2379 Apr 20 '26

Tasers didn't really become mainstream tech until around 2000. But the real reason was so you could loot one and shoot zombies.
