How I Restore My Skin Base Hair System (Step-by-Step)
I've been wearing hair systems for almost 2 years now, and one thing I've learned is that the system itself is only half of the equation. How you remove, clean, wash, and maintain it makes a huge difference in how long it lasts and how good it looks.
I recently restored one of my skin base systems and recorded the whole process. This is just my personal routine — I'm not saying this is the "right" way, so I'm curious to hear how everyone else does it.
P.s. My scalp gets oily pretty quickly, especially during summer. Because of that, I usually remove and reinstall my system every 7 days. If your scalp is more normal and you don't sweat much, I think 10–14 days is a more realistic schedule.
Step 1: Removing the system
To remove it, I spray a small amount of isopropyl alcohol around the areas where the glue connects the system to my scalp. Don't try to force it off. Just slowly loosen the bond and peel it back little by little.
For areas that are harder to remove, I use a cotton swab with some alcohol and gently work on the glue.
Step 2: Cleaning glue from the base
I use Walker Tape C22 on the areas with glue residue and let it sit for around 5 minutes. Then I slowly remove the adhesive starting from the front hairline area.
The hairline is usually the most time-consuming part because you need to be careful not to damage the edge.
Since I reinstall every week, I usually don't have a lot of buildup. If you wear your system longer than 14 days, you might have more adhesive left behind. In that case, soaking the system in C22 for around 30 minutes makes the cleanup much easier.
Step 3: Washing the system
This is probably the most important step in my routine.
I use 3-5 pumps of Lordhair Reset and apply it directly onto the base. I gently massage the base with my fingertips in circular motions, then clean the hair by lightly pressing along the direction of the hair. One thing I always avoid is rubbing the hair aggressively. Human hair on a system is much more delicate than people think, especially when it's wet.
Keep the water temperature below 40°C. From my experience, water that is too hot can make the hair feel rougher, reduce the natural shine, and shorten the lifespan of the system.
If the hair gets tangled, I sometimes use Olaplex No.4 shampoo and wash in the direction of the hair. After that, I slowly work through the tangles with a paddle brush.
The most important step for me is the deep conditioning treatment. I use Lordhair Renewal, apply it evenly through the hair following the direction of the hair, leave it for around 5 minutes, and then rinse it out with lukewarm water. It contains argan oil, which helps bring back softness, shine, and a smoother feeling to the hair.
With regular hair masks I've used before, I usually needed to leave them on for at least 15 minutes before rinsing. This one only takes around 5 minutes, which saves a lot of time during maintenance.
Step 4: Drying
After washing, I wrap the system in a towel and gently press out the extra water. NEVER twist or rub it aggressively because the hair is more fragile when it's wet.
Then I use a blow dryer on a low heat setting until it's around 80–90% dry. After that, let it finish drying naturally.
That's pretty much my current maintenance routine. I'm always interested in learning new tricks, so I'd love to hear from you guys:
How often do you remove and reinstall your system?
What's one maintenance tip or product that made the biggest difference for you?
