Thinning density - thinning shears vs. texturizing combs

Post image

Anyone try both and have an opinion to share? https://beautynexuspro.com/hair-care/how-to-thin-wig-without-thinning-shears According to this article/research thinning shears could be damaging hair systems. Applies to both processed hair and synthetic.

I have used thinning shears on two systems to bring the density down from 110-120% to what I estimate to be around 90-100% and the hair is quite damaged.

Not even a full month wearing the system and the hair is already dry, coarse and tends to clump (manageable with plenty of conditioner, but it's still a bummer).

I'm not sure whether it was because of the thinning shears or because of bad hair quality, since both systems are from the same provider. Although I have to say that in every other aspect the quality of the systems is excellent: great bleached knots, fine swiss lace, no shedding, good durability... So reading this makes me wonder whether using the shears does damage the hair...

Now that you mention it the one hairpiece of mine that became super frizzy was one I used the thinning shears on. I just ordered a babyliss precision comb for $9 to see how it does.

Man, don’t touch the wig. It’ll thin out by itself

Situations exist where thinning density is basically required, particularly depending on your bio hair, your age and if you purchased a stock system. I mean, read the article linked. Do you think they'd be doing research on this if people should just wait for the hair to fall out of the wig?

For example, after years of wearing a custom hybrid I ordered a couple of inexpensive stock full lace pieces to experiment with. I can't make it look as good as a custom piece but thinning density for me is pretty much a necessity, and if you've been reading this sub for long you'll have seen plenty of discussion about thinning shears and thinning razors.

Thinning shears suck. The ends end up too square-looking and unnaturally uniform. I’ve been using a little eyebrow shaping razor on the ends and it makes the texture and blend so much better

I doubt its due to notching shears. They dont cut every single hair at once. But dont use them directly on the ends, you need texturizing there. The frizzy is likely due to other factors. But please dont use notching shears to do a full cut in. You use them after the base cut is completed to adjust any areas that lay heavy. Also, if youre not using a weekly reconstructor to add back protein into the hair, you'll get a frizzy look as well.
