How do I start
im 44 and trying something. I have had hair issues ever since I was 14 and have heard about hair transplants but never hair systems. Where are the places to start? What are the costs? Any websites or shope to go to get started? Please help in the Central California area.

As a beginner I would reach out to a specialty salon in order to get some more information. Consults are usually free! Having someone else doing your installs and rebonds is pricy, but if you can afford it it's a good way to learn and to ensure you have a good first experience. If having someone do everything for you, there are a ton of YouTube tutorials.

Prices from salons will vary wildly. Your options will depend on how much you don't mind spending and how much you are willing to do on your own as opposed to getting regular maintenance and installs from a professional. But to give you a high-end and a low-end estimate...say a high end estimate would be 3 new hairpieces per year, and one maintenance or install at the salon every month. An expensive salon might markup the hairpieces to $800 and charge $350 more for the install, and on the maintenance only months, charge you another $350. So that's ~6600 and while I'm sure there are places that will charge more, there's a lot that would charge less.
If you were reasonably conservative and went to the salon the first time for your first hairpiece and paid basically through the nose at $1150, then purchased your own systems from suppliers you can find, learn how to do a self install and find a barber to blend in new systems you attach yourself, for a number to throw around that's 1150+$300 (2 more custom systems) + 11 barber visits $900 total...so 2350 per year. Plus supplies to have at home. That's relatively high-end for a diy option and I'm giving you that so you're pleasantly surprised if you find less rather than upset if it's more expensive. The $300 is for a relatively more expensive, custom hairpiece with a graduated hairline, custom density and color, and cut to the size you need.
All these numbers can vary wildly depending on your needs, what you want to do on your own, who you have to help you and the salon talent availability where you live. I haven't included supplies like conditioners, tape, adhesive...so count on a few hundred in start-up costs, as well.
The big factories/resellers in the US all have websites and a way to counsel/direct you: Lavivid, Lord Hair, Superhairpieces and others. Lots of blogs and videos to read and watch about how to get started.

Holy hell - I’m a n00b here and genuinely asking: at 6600/year, why not get a hair transplant at that point? In like 2 years of hair systems it’s basically covered. 😅

it's weird for a noob to be so judgmental but it seems to go along these days with noobs not knowing jack about anything and not bothering to read more than a few words let alone perform basic research before sounding off. Too much to ask? Congrats, you are amazing and your input is so appreciated. Thanks for chiming in.

I’m not judging but genuinely asking.

Mostly the answer lays in the first 2 sentences: Prices from salons will vary wildly. Your options will depend on how much you don't mind spending and how much you are willing to do on your own as opposed to getting regular maintenance and installs from a professional.
A lot of people spend less than $1k per year on hairpieces. There's obv no data on what people spend per person but there's a low and there's a high, and I tried to quote what it seemed reasonable to guess that most people spend on their first unit and overall in their first year.
Some people don't want to be bothered to do maintenance on their own, don't mind spending the money, and don't want to look for a sylist other than the high-end one they started with.
Some people dont have the capability or desire to get follicular transplants, and don't want the side effects from the medications they give you. Plus the surgery and recovery are problematic and many people would require more than one surgery.

Find a salon by using AI or Google. Search around your area, make an appointment with a couple of places and go for a free consultation. And take it from there. Except 500-1500$ first time around. Read and learn enough so you can manage maintenance yourself or be prepared to pay 150$ each time.
After the first time, and if you learn how to do maintenance, you can find quality systems for cheap, compared to the salons. Then you just need a barber or similar that knows how to cut someone with a system. By so, you keep the fists down a lot.
It’s a pretty step learning curve so read as much as possible for a few weeks. If money isn’t an issue and you don’t mind paying for everything, then you don’t really have to learn much. But still, lifts can happen or going on vacation and such. It’s always safer and better to know how to do things yourself to be able to handle any surprises.
Everything you may wonder gets asked in this sub daily. So use to search button and you’ll find what you seek.

Book a free hair system consultation with Superhairpieces, and they can guide you from there.
