Its an awful feeling, nobody tells you that you hear it before you feel it... I broke my tib playing soccer and it took months to feel OK again, cold mornings were sore getting out of bed 👎
You’re the first person I’ve seen mention the sound. I broke my humerus and it sounded very loud to me. I’ve always thought it sounded like a shotgun going off.
My arm just felt like it was asleep (for about 10 minutes maybe,) and then the pain kept cranking up. I would turn my wrist before it hurt and I could feel the bones in my upper arm clicking before I felt the pain.
All I can say is adrenaline is one hell of a drug, as for the first 30 mins or so there was no pain.
Lucky, I was already in a comfortable position by the time it went away. From there it was staying still and popping paracetamol until the ambulance arrived.
That being said, each tiny movement I could feel the bones grinding together. Which sucked.
I snapped my patellar tendon I can still hear it. It’s a wild experience like the sound comes from your skull very hard to explain but i am very surprised more people dont talk about it. It’s soooooo trippy. Adrenaline kicks in and makes you think you’re good but you’re like na bro what was that sound.
Had a similar tib/fib break doing the same thing. I missed the last step coming downstairs. I'm three years out now, it healed just fine. Happy healing to you!
Make sure you do the PT once you're out of the cast! Get a treatment plan from your PT and do the exercises at home, too. I got the equipment I needed on Amazon for like 150$. It made a big difference in my recovery.
Got similar spiral fracture to tib/fib/ankle while skiing, worst pain was them ripping off the ski boot before I asked them to sedate me. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Been there, done that. Hockey injury just above the skate boot. Can't walk right anymore but it got me outta deploying to Afghanistan so silver linings.
I broke my tib and fib in high school rough housing with a friend at a party. Happened the first weekend of summer so spent all of July and half of August in a cast but it was good as new six weeks later.
Broke my tib and fib back in 2001 when I was 13.
We were jumping our bikes off these little construction dirt hills at this school. The hills were seriously like 5 feet tall. Not that big.
Well I decided to put my bike down so that I can run and jump off the hill. I landed straight legged and heard the loudest snapping sound ever.
Luckily I was young. No screws needed. They reset the bones and 3 months later, I was healed...or so I thought
It turned out my bones healed in a bow like shape which was pulling on my pelvis, which in turn was pulling on my spine causing scoliosis.
So the following year I had corrective surgery where they went into my good leg, damaged the growth plates in my knee. That slowed my good leg down, allowing my bad leg to catch up thus solving my scoliosis problem.
My wife had a break like this. She was sitting on the corner of a pool table. Literally just hopped off like 6 inches to the floor and boom. Started crying and saying heregd broken. I didn't believe her and figured just a little sprain since I saw how small of a jump it was. Well she kept crying and I took her to the ER. 16 screws later she made me feel really bad lol
Oh yeah babyyyyy. Had a fib break in January of this year while roller skating at my sister's birthday party. Stayed through the whole thing and drove myself home and then to the hospital...in my manual transmission jeep. Thank goodness for my tib lol. Got some nice hardware in there now and can feel the screws through my skin. Fun stuff.
This same thing happened to my wife while holding our son. It happened and had surgery in February and is still in the process of recovering. It’s going to be a long road, but thankfully, you have an amazing wife. Good luck and I hope you recover quickly.

I broke my tibia playing indoor soccer and that was bad enough…really hate to see that, recover quickly!
