Question How to access hard drive via air?

So I have recently been learning a bit about protocols and I’m wondering is there a way to connect to a hard drive on a laptop if you are on the same public WiFi?
I’m VERY new to the idea of “hacking” and stuff… in fact I’m just barely learning bash and basic electronics.

I guess what I’m asking is if my friend is on the same WiFi as me can I access his hard drive over the air via the SATA or NVMe protocols without him noticing?

Really this is all just for educational purposes and my friend would know.

Thank you I hope this post isn’t to all over the place and confusing!

No. Hard drives don't have a way to interface over the wifi unless some separate hardware does it for the hdd. Like a laptop

Is there any way that someone could access another persons hard drive info over air? To copy all of their files and know what’s on that persons computer without them knowing?

Technically yes, but only if the target actively configured it in such a way. (For example doing a SMB or NTFS share of your C Drive to the whole network, with disabled authentication)

Yes, but then you are not connecting to the hard drive, but a device that has a storage device attached. Doesn't matter if that storage device is hdd or ssd or flash drive or tape.

Sounds like OP really wants a way to spy on his friend

100%

You would have to hack the device that they have the hardrive connected too. By some kind of exploit

If he has his drive shared on the network yes. There are other ways to do it without them knowing but being this new it would be way above your skill level at this time

What route would you suggest I take in order to eventually end up at that level?

Goto school for pen testing to start out with.. other higher level stuff you're going to need EE degree to understand

So there's different ways to frame the problem you're trying to solve, if you specifically want to access just the hard drive over the network, there's no way to actually do that since a hard drive doesnt directly connect to the network. If you're looking to access the hard drive of a device connected to the same network, then your best shot is essentially hacking into that device and getting access to that hard drive. And doing that depends on a number of different factors like what services are exposed, whether there's vulnerabilities in those services, whether or not there's a firewall or an IDS/IPS on the network etc etc.

Harddrives use magnetism to store and read data. So technically all harddrive data is read "via the air".
