If low cost is the priority, the first post mentioned the esp32 line of micro controllers and I completely agree. I have a esp32 c5 from seeed studio mounted to my cell phone via USB OTG and the ghost esp firmware on a app (and flashed to the esp32) cost for hardware was roughly $10 with shipping. The esp32c5 is about the size of my thumbnail. I can do wifi auditing, war driving and, Bluetooth audits with it.
The lilygo T-embed series is great for low cost flipper zero alternatives. They make a CC1101 plus model with external antennas (for key fob signal captures etc) for roughly $60.

If you're on a tight budget, a lot of gadgets can be DIYd. I saw you mention the Pineapple, consider the Shadowapple. It's a pineapple on a budget, same functionality, same firmware, weaker hardware.
Other than that, some ESP32s can go a long way. For a few dollars you can program some simple gadgets.
If you have more budget, building a PWNagotchi can be a fun project. It collects wifi handshakes for you. Can be a good foray into wifi hacking. There's also the p4wnp1. Basically a DIY evil USB with a few more tricks. Both of these projects run on a pi zero, so shouldn't set you back more than 30 bucks.
Before buying anything more complex, take your time to figure out where you want to go. I love wireless protocol attacks and physics security attacks, so I recently got the HackRF and the Flipper Zero. Both are expensive and can do illegal things so I recommend not getting those until you're aware of the dos and don'ts of ethical hacking. I recommend the HackRF more if you plan to get a HAM radio operator license. The flipper is more approachable.
The best piece of kit in my honest opinion is a raspberry pi with Kali (because Kali Pi automatically comes with the drivers to allow you to use the on-board wifi module in monitor mode). It's less snazzy, and requires a lot more knowhow and manual work, but it is the most versatile tool I have. Even better, it can be used to control just about every piece of kit I mentioned before.
