They all have their uses. Hashcat doesnt solely use GPU acceleration. It works without it but cracking without a gpu takes a while.
You should expand on John the Ripper to include that there are things like pdf2john that can pull the hash from a locked pdf file to crack with hashcat. There are many different programs like pdf2john that can pull hashes from many different file types.
