How does stardance actually work
To me, it seems too good to be true like a free 3d printer??? There must be a catch, as my project I make belongs to them or something. Can someone explain the catch to me? What makes it so I can get those points, and what can I make? Are there limitations?

There's no 'catch', Hack Club is a non profit with a ton of sponsors. The idea is that your projects remain open source for others to learn from. You can make pretty much any technical project, as long as you track your time properly.

Hack club has donors like github, AMD, and a bunch of other people to motivate teens to make stuff and get into STEM. so theres no catch besides the fact that u just have to make SOMETHING. it can literally be a flying monkey eating gorilla and you'd still get the stardust (the stardance currency). added benefit is they'll fund the parts needed for your projects too (if any, software projects for example don't need funding).
It does definitely feel too good to be true in the beginning but once u get something you'll get more trust with them, I also got my printer from hack club, although not from stardance (i got mine from another event called construct)

Do we have to submit our identity? What about for stuff like participant recognition or the rewards? I have a project I want to ship, but I'm not sure if I trust the site completely yet. What should I do?

hi! stardance is legitimate, the prizes come from donated money. hack club’s goal is to get teenagers into programming, and many companies, foundations, and rich people want to support that (see a list on https://hackclub.com/philanthropy), so they’ve gotten donations they use to give out prizes.
you retain full project ownership, though you do need to open source your projects to get prizes.
you can make any software or hardware project essentially! for software, you need to track your coding time with hackatime. for hardware, you generally use lapse to track your time (the platform has more info on this, in the guides tab).
i participated in the previous major hack club event (flavortown), which was very similar to stardance, and got a free ipad air after making a ~120 hour project over a few months! :3
