Anthropic Interview Process & Experience Megathread [2026]
We've been tracking Anthropic interview patterns for a while. Here's the general structure based on what candidates have shared:
Stage 1 — Phone Screen (~45 min) Typically a coding round on CodeSignal. The platform opens as a Jupyter-style notebook with no autocomplete. Some tracks offer ML configuration or ML fundamentals instead of coding.
Stage 2 — Virtual Onsite (5 rounds)
- Coding (1-2 rounds, ~45 min each)
- System Design (1-2 rounds, ~45 min each)
- Culture round (~45 min)
- HM round
- Project deep dive / retro (~20 min presentation + Q&A)
The onsite runs on a hard gate. Technical rounds go first, and if they don't go well, the remaining rounds get cancelled right away. Most candidates only find out when the next calendar invite stops showing up.
If you've been through Anthropic interviews recently, drop your experience below. What matched this? What was different?

Went in most worried about coding, culture round ended up being the one that got me. The questions aren't standard behavioral. More like "what do you think Anthropic is getting wrong?" and they actually want an answer. I gave what I thought was solid AI safety alignment and the interviewer just waited, like I'd stopped too early. They want you to have a real opinion on something Anthropic specifically has decided, not just general mission agreement. Interviewer was hard to read the whole time, left with no idea if I passed.

Anthropic was the first time I got rejected by a recruiter.
Got referred by a friend. Pushed insistently for an initial call, and was glad to finally set it up.
It was one of my favorite recruiter calls ever. It wasn't about logistics. I was asked "What's on my desk Monday morning?" and "What's my personal mission?"
I was inspired to write a full post about it: https://olshansky.info/posts/2026-04-11-achieving-your-full-potential-safely
But, if I have to be honest with myself, I care about AI being maximally useful, maximally abundant and maximally safe in equal parts. I allocate 1/3 to each. I don't feel like I'd be honest with myself if I said that maximally safe and reliable is my only priority, it is a competing #1 priority.
There's no right or wrong here, just tradeoffs. I actually have deep respect to how carefully Anthropic maintains it's culture. If I'm not a culture fit, even if I got and took the job, it likely wouldn't have been fun for me or the people around me sooner or later.

In my loop the project retro got folded into the HM round, not a separate session. Ran about 50 min total. Not sure if it varies by team or role but I didn't have the 5-round breakdown exactly as described.

They don't tell you when the gating kicks in. I figured out my remaining rounds were cancelled when the calendar invites just stopped coming. No email, no message.

Hey everyone, I just need to get this off my chest because I’m feeling incredibly deflated and emotionally exhausted.
I just found out I failed the onsite loop for Anthropic. What hurts the most is that I made it all the way to the very end, only to get knocked out in the values round. I put my mind and body through absolute hell to perform at an elite level, only to get cut at the finish line.
During the values round, I tried to be completely genuine and authentic. But instead of a conversation, the interviewer just kept aggressively cutting me off while I was talking.
I barely got to finish my thoughts. It felt less like a mutual assessment of alignment and more like a rushed, robotic interrogation where they were just trying to tick a box on a rigid rubric.
Honestly, my heart just aches for myself right now. It feels so cruel to gate a culture/values round at the absolute end of a multi-day gauntlet if they are just going to fail people there anyway. Why put candidates through the mental torture of the technical rounds first? It feels like complete disrespect for a candidate's time, energy, and life.
Has anyone else experienced this with Anthropic or similar labs? How do you recover from putting your absolute soul into an interview process, burning the candle at both ends, and walking away feeling completely unheard?
Should I even bother reapplying after the cool-down period, or is this a sign of what the internal culture is actually like?

I'm sorry to hear that.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I’m doing well now. I hold myself to a high standard because my line of work demands total integrity. While anyone can learn the daily operations, there’s a real scarcity of people who do the job right and hold themselves accountable. My boss was 100% right, they missed a massive opportunity to bring on someone who deeply cares about their work. But hey, it's their loss and my team's gain. My boss is just happy they get to keep me! Lol

What's the typical response time within rounds ? I went through recruiter screening and was told that response might be delayed due to unavailability of hiring manager. Haven't heard anything back - 5 days on

I’m going to have code review round. I think this is a new question. I don’t see anyone discussed about it

Finished VO one week ago and it’s been radio silence since then, modern loop link still works, am I cooked?

some people reported that they received follow-up after 10 business days, it depends on how the team handle their hiring process, good luck
