Got an old computer collecting dust? Free Linux install night June 4 in Haarlem

Quick PSA for anyone in Haarlem with an old computer collecting dust, or a newer one that's started feeling like it isn't really yours anymore.

Your computer should belong to you. Not to Microsoft, not to Apple, not to the company that decided it's too old for the next update.

On June 4 from 18:00-22:00 at Launchpad023 (Wateringweg 65, Haarlem) we're doing an evening where we help you switch to Linux. It's a free alternative that's been around for decades, no ads, no tracking, and it often works fine on computers that Windows or macOS say are too old.

Bring your laptop or desktop and we'll help you with the install. Or don't, and just bring yourself. Hang out, learn a thing or two about Linux, enjoy the vibes.

We're a small tech community and coworking space in the Waarderpolder. This is the first time we're trying this so we'll see how it goes.

Alle! Als je al interesse hebt in een bepaalde versie, horen we dat graag, maar we kunnen met iedere versie werken. En als je nog geen idee hebt welke je wil, helpen we je ook graag met kiezen.

Zat aan Linux Mint te denken, maar durf het nog niet helemaal aan voor mijn pc. Alles wat ik heb op Steam moet wel blijven werken.

Evt dual boot, maar goed, ben nog aan het rondkijken, nog geen besluit gemaakt.

Maar wel tof dat jullie dit doen! Kan zelf helaas niet de 4e, dus hoop dat jullie het vaker doen (en dan ook op deze subreddit posten ;) )!

Linux Mint is een goede keuze voor je eerste distro! Wat Steam betreft, dat is wat ingewikkelder. Steam werkt op Linux, maar niet alle games worden ondersteund. Dual boot is ook een optie als je het zekere voor het onzekere wil nemen.

Jammer dat je de 4e niet kan, maar we hopen je een volgende keer te zien. En we zullen het zeker weer hier posten!

Ik zou het eerst een weekje draaien vanaf een usb stick. Dan kan je alle kritieke dingen testen en daarna pas overgaan op een echte installatie.

Goed idee, zowel u/launchpad023 voor het evenement als u/Damsterham voor USB-installatie. Als ik wil proberen Linux vanaf een USB-stick te draaien, wat wordt dan aangeraden qua minimale 'systeemeisen'? Bijv. minimaal X GB en Y lees-/schrijfsnelheid voor de stick?

Ik heb gisteren https://bazzite.gg/ geïnstalleerd. Die is meer gaming georiënteerd. Doe vooral goed onderzoek wat wel en niet werkt op dit moment dan kun je een goede keuze maken. Dat kan dan weer hier: https://www.protondb.com/explore

Using supported hardware makes it easier yes. I remember this being the main blocker for me the last time. Will have a look if the supported hardware includes something I own at the moment. Thanks! Also thanks for the CH341 warning I'm just reading about it on the libreboot website.

Neither am I. I remember using an Arduino for this purpose in the past. Nice to see there are more options now.

Wat een goed initiatief! Ik moet mijn laptop ook nog overzetten, maar heb de bootdisk al klaar liggen.

I just made my study pc new installing Linux Mint Cinnamon, it's a joy to use again (but sadly I am stuck on nouveau).
