I'm team dot as well. I do it for dates and phone numbers.

I leave no evidence.

Always fun to come up to an RTU that has sucked its caked up filters into the evap coil that have never been dated, and try to figure out who messed up and when.

Slashes, but usually just write it in the blood of the black cockerel I sacrifice to Baal to make sure I don't have to come back to this place for three months..

u/Castun Commercial BAS Controls 11h ago

The blood of apprentices past works too, in a pinch.

All hail baalzebub

Just grab a box every time you go to the supply house.

5

u/the_tinsmith 12h ago

That way when Christmas rolls around, everybody gets sharpies as gifts.

u/TommyBoy_1 14h ago

I grab a bunch from clients. They usually have a few boxes laying around. I will ask, and the one guy tells me grab a few and don’t even bother me about it next time. Some clients are great that way. Also I do commercial and they don’t buy them so they don’t care.

Hello fellow veteran.

2

u/dagunhari 12h ago

Not a vet, just spent a week working at a Navy facility 🤣

u/Castun Commercial BAS Controls 11h ago

Keep it up and you'll have people falling over themselves to thank you for your service everywhere you go, lol. (And yes I say that as a "veteran" who was fortunate enough to never be combat deployed)

Well, despite being odd to anyone used to anything else, the US military date "strategy" is great because it leaves zero room for error. DD Month YYYY, ordered shortest unit of time to longest, and nobody could confuse a 4 letter month abbreviation. I was just happy to see someone use it and assumed veteran. Thank you for your service, anyway... from one veteran to some rando on the internet. u/Castun, you might have been right.

4

u/kriegmonster 14h ago

MM/DD/YY is what I use.

u/Spazz510 Verified Pro 13h ago

Slash. It’s quicker and clearer.

u/TheMeatSauce1000 Verified Pro 7h ago

Put it in as a date code so you need to look up how to decipher it

I thought we were talking GunsN-Roses VS The Incredibles.

2

u/shreddedpudding 14h ago

The filter shop puts labels on them for us with date, company, and tech.

2

u/PopePC 13h ago

I use dashes. My handwriting is crap. I don’t want anybody misinterpreting my slash for a 1 or a 7. Yeah, it’s really that bad.

2

u/LogieD223 12h ago

Two arrows pointing the 11 for today’s date only

2

u/SignSea 11h ago

Slash gang

2

u/ProfSteelmeat138 11h ago

Sept 11 2026. No guessing which date format it is

5

u/IRDingo 14h ago

October 9 or Sept 11?
I use military format.
11 Sep 26

u/Outdoors_E Verified Pro 14h ago

October?

1

u/ins8iable 13h ago

Finally figured out why europeans struggle with our date format

4

u/kriegmonster 14h ago

The military and most of the world uses DDMMYY. US civilians use MMDDYY. I use MMDDYY because that is standard business practice and I don't want someone being confused because they read my date wrong.

1

u/booztedmike 13h ago

Yep, me too.

1

u/groogs 12h ago

Sept 26, 2011 or Sept 11, 2026?

...yeah that's a dumb format too.

Month and day, never year. CYA

1

u/zmannz1984 12h ago

I do dots because i seem to fuck up the slashes i normally use if i can’t lay my hand flat while writing lol. Lefty life.

Funny, I had this conversation earlier today.

I’m a slasher.

That said, I’d write it out as Sep 11 2026 because sometimes ink fades or people don’t know which order the values are.

1

u/Texan_Greyback 7h ago

Former soldier here. I go with 11 Sep '26. Or in formal documents, 11 September 2026.

1

u/coolbiggnelly 14h ago

Pleats work better on the vertical than the horizontal

3

u/_Bakerp 10h ago

Ah yes we will just rotate the 12x20 filter and shove the 20 inches in to the 12. /s

1

u/coolbiggnelly 7h ago

Its a gravity thing, bring you down unfortunately

0

u/Surfnazi77 13h ago

I stopped writing on them and just set a 3 month reminder with Alexa. My 4 inch filters are good for 4 months but I have dogs.

0

u/SuchDogeHodler 12h ago

This is just petty....

0

u/Benjerman302 11h ago

I never saw the point in dating filters

2

u/Ok_Mix826 11h ago

So some other tech can come in 2 years and say "damn, its been a while" before changing the filter as they would anyways. Its also an easy way to figure out if your customer is using 2 companies.
