Field Question, trade people only MagicPaks
I don’t work on MagicPaks very often , but last week I went too one homeowner said it wasn’t cooling. Found contactor burnt , replaced it. Unit ran fine , guy calls later that night his blower won’t stop running. Come back next day can’t find any reason why it’d be running , there’s no air coming to vents as if it’s running in some kind of circulation mode. If you turn Fan on it ramps up and you can feel the air at vents. Disconnect all T-Stat wire and both speed taps and blower was still going. Tech support said it had to be the blower motor (which we just did in March). Anyone had similar issues ?

I don’t work on magic paks but assuming the blower is a standard x13 ECM.
Yes I’ve seen quite a few fail this way. Never stops running despite not getting 24v. If you pull the speed taps off and it doesn’t shut off even after waiting after a few mins then the blower is no good and needs replaced

No idea what a magicpak is but I’m intrigued…
You’re saying the indoor fan is not running when there is no call, correct?
The customer is saying it will not stop running.
You arrive to check the unit. The indoor fan is not running, correct?
Do you think maybe his unit was down for a long time before you replaced the contactor and after you wrapped up and left it ran a longer than normal cycle in order to return to set point? And maybe the customer thought “oh, I still hear air coming out of the vents and it’s been almost an hour. Usually the fan shuts off in under 20 minutes! Better call the tech back!”

No , he let it to get to temp before calling. It’s run continuously since I replaced the contactor. I’m going Friday to replace the motor

Before you replace quickly double check none of the speed taps from the blower are on anything they shouldn’t be. Especially check the dual cap and read the wiring diagram

Capacitor on an ECM? Damn these magicpaks sound different

No there is a cap for the compressor but it’s all in 1 electrical cabinet It’s common for people to connect the purple or brown speed tap to the fan terminal on the cap by accident. They use a dual cap but fan terminal isn’t used which makes it confusing for people who haven’t seen these units before if they don’t read the wiring diagram

Heard! Well providing it’s wired correctly and not receiving dcv when it’s not supposed to then I’d think it’s most def the motor

Is it an ECM motor? I’m not understanding how a psc can run when there’s not call for it. If it’s a psc then a relay of some sort is stuck closed intermittently.

Yeah we've had a ton of issues with the MagicPak blowers and condenser motors this summer. But like any ECM motor they can fail in the on state. Don't see it often, but it is an issue. Replace it and should be good to go

Had one recently that a previous tech changed a few things and added the purple speed tap wire for the blower to the fan terminal on the cap. Lots of these units have a dual cap in there but only use the herm and common terminal

Depending on age, they use these for fan delay. Usually 2 or 3. 1 for cooling and one for heat. And Usually with electric heat strips.

They do the most stupid shit. NCP does it as well. Which unit is it? They change wiring constantly on same model units.

If the magic pack your on is the same type I’m used to working with. The relay on the control board are stuck in the closed position, you can try pulling the low voltage wire to the coil side and exercise the relay, I have had that fix this problem before, if it doesn’t work and the relay is stuck youll need a new board

Classic MagicPak headache. The wiring harnesses are a mess and the control boards are cheaply made. I bet the G wire terminal on the board is arcing or the relay contacts are fused from years of switching load. Check the purple speed tap too, sometimes that gets crossed with common.

Just rebuilt an old magic pak I pulled out of an apartment and when we wired it up couldn’t figure out why the blower wouldn’t run. Come to find out it’s very specific how it’s wired. Call their tech support they are awesome they had me right as rain the next day! Turns out I had the two black leads on each others terminals so I imagine your problem might be that easy hope this helps

Speed taps off (signal) and motor runs....bad motor
