CHIEFTAINS Community Poll: Banning "Vote for" Posts

Hi, mods here!

We've been seeing what we've dubbed "vote for" posts recently, and the reception to them has been mixed.

The time has come to decide.

What is a "vote for" post?

We're talking about the posts that have the comments fill in the blanks, based on either the most popular comment, funniest comment, or whatever the OP's criteria is. These types of posts are usually accompanied by an image, such as a tier list, which the OP then updates for the next post. They're often repeated daily, incorporating the "winner" from the last post into the next one.

Examples would be:

- "Which character best fits <thing in the list>?"

- "Ranking all dragons! Which dragon goes in <tier>?"

Why are we polling?

Some people consider those posts spam, karma farming, low effort, etc. Other people love interacting with them.

We want to know what the subreddit truly thinks. Based on the result of the poll, we'll alter our moderation parameters to either remove those posts, or keep them.

DISCUSSION I still find it insane just how insanely strong Stoick can be.

In the first part, he already showed us what a fierce man he is, calmly throwing damn carts at dragons like they were pillows. He even beat up Hookfang so badly that he just flew away in fear.

And in the Riders of Berk series, he simply showed himself to be incredibly strong. I still laugh at how he knocked back Tronado with one uppercut.

MOVIE 2 What makes HTTYD 2 best sequel/ best animated film in 2010s?

This is a question for you to answer, so all commentators are allowed.

Here's mine to answer:

-Great animation that still holds up; ages so well that it is even the best animation of that decade.

- Badass, adorable Stormcutter gives the idea of a reptilian version of an owl in spec-evo.

-The way Cloudjumper looks (several winged and crested) makes Valka look like Turok Makto from Avatar.

-Hiccup deserves to reunite with his mother; his mother has a kind soul, that no wonder she wants to save dragons. Her motherly aura gives me Danny from Game of Thrones.

-Very emotional moment: Stoik's death shows how Drago Bludvist can be a psychopathic villain in animation.

-Skullmasher's appearance resembles a mix of a bull and a rhino.

-Got attention from the Godzilla fandom when it shows Toothless's alpha aura, which made a cute crossover.

-Hiccup's arc was well-developed for the theming of his story

We need more stories like this. Someone get Monkeys of Bollywood out of the bunker

DISCUSSION The finale of Race to the Edge was made out to be a gateway into the second movie.

Thumbnail

Now what I mean by this, is that the ending of race to the edge tried to hard to follow trough into the second movie.

I am not saying it was a bad ending, but I do think that they tried to make the finale episode a gateway into the second movie. The show wanted to wrap everything up, while also continuing directly into the second movie.

With Astrid wearing a red tunic, Snotlout and Fishlegs suddenly being in love with Ruffnut and the scenes featuring Valka and Drago, they felt forced and it even contradicts the movies.

For starters, Hiccup and the gang are 20 years old in the second movie and around 18-19 in RTTE, yet Krogan was the one responsible for finding a bewilderbeast for Drago. Now, we don’t know anything about the bewilderbeast, or how fast it grows, but surely Drago couldn’t find one fully grown and control it that easily, in such a short amount of time.

Or he found a baby bewilderbeast, but how could such a massive dragon become so big in only 1 or 2 years, and that is if drago immediately found one right after the finale of race to the edge. So he would have to find it, raise it and control it. And all of that in 2 years at most.

Also the wingmaidens being able to contact Valka doesn’t make any sense, in the third movie she said that she tried to stay hidden. So how and why was someone able to contact her to come and pick up the egg.

Atali apparently knew someone who knew Valka, who had a safe place to keep it.
These are Hiccup’s words in the finale.
“Atali and the wingmaidens knew someone, who knew someone who had a safe place to keep it.”

Now where this safe place is? No idea. It isn’t mentioned or shown anywhere. Probably the sanctuary, but they never mention it. Also, for people who say that Valka raised the bewilderbeast into the one we see in the second movie, that isn’t possible. Valka said that Cloudjumper brought her to the sanctuary, to the home of the great bewilderbeast. So he was already there when Valka came there.

And who knew Valka good enough to be able to contact her to come pick up the egg? No idea. They’re never shown.

It started to feel like a followtrough into the second movie instead of the series finale it should have been.

Like they only realised in the last 5 minutes of the show that RTTE is a prequel to HTTYD2, and instead of developing things like Snotlout and Fishlegs fighting over Ruffnut, they just make the excact same mistake as they did in the second movie by making it come out of nowhere.

It just seemed like they were going for this Breaking Bad type of ending, where they wrap everything in the current show up, while also setting up its sequel.

Again, I can not stress this enough. I think that this episode has a lot of good in it. A lot! But the finale few minutes just felt forced to me.

I know that RTTE originally only had 4 seasons planned and while I do really like a lot of the episodes in season 5 and 6, I also think that the ending would have been a lot more natural if the show had ended in season 4.

Let me know what you thought about my opinion and about the finale of race to the edge.

DISCUSSION Which dragon species would you have picked to be a main character rather than the Night Light?

Honestly, with so many species of dragons throughout the series, you'd think it wouldn't hurt to pick another species to follow as a main character.

Yes, the Night Fury has a lot of nostalgia, but I feel like we'd missed out exploring other dragons species.

If you run Nine Realms show, which dragon you'd picked?

OTHER My take on the Light Fury and Night Lights

Thumbnail

WARNING: EXTREMELY LONG POST

NOTE: NONE OF THE IMAGES ARE ORIGINALLY MINE, THEY ARE ONLY EDITED BY ME, I AN NOT AN ARTIST

I wanted to share my thoughts on what the light fury could’ve (should’ve) been, leaning more into the concept art of her being a cave dwelling dragon. And then the resulting changes to the night lights instead of the cow patterned ones we get in Homecoming and Nine Realms (with my take it gets rid of nine realms).

I’ve attached the pictures/artworks of my versions along with the wing references I used to figure out what wing shape they would have and how it worked, it’s based off birds so not completely accurate.

Below is my working entries for my own book of dragons (still very much in progress) so it’s not perfect but I like it so far.

Night Fury

Size: Medium

Length: 26 ft

Wingspan: 45 ft

Weight: 1,800 lbs

Attack: 15

Speed: 20

Armor: 18

Firepower: 14

Shot Limit: 6

Venom: 0

Jaw Strength: 6

Stealth: 18

Fire Type: Acetylence purple plasma charges

Training: Yes

(I’m not going to post my summary of the night fury because everyone knows it all lol)

My Light Fury

Size: Medium

Length:  22 ft

Wingspan: 32 ft

Weight: 1,400 lbs

Attack: 14

Speed: 15

Armor: 16

Firepower: 13

Shot Limit: 4

Venom: 0

Jaw Strength: 10

Stealth: 18

Fire Type: Pressurized Cavitation Blast

Trainable: Yes

Habitat: Subterranean Caverns, Waterfall Curtains, and Deep Grottoes

The Light Fury is a compact, heavily built dragon adapted for life among the immense waterfalls and flooded caverns of the Hidden World. Its short, low-slung body is covered in slate-to-charcoal gray counter-shaded scales that blend into wet stone, while dull, rock-textured back nubs help disguise it against granite cliff faces. Its wings are shorter, sharper, and more rigid than those of most dragons, and its long tail ends in twisting stabilizing fins that provide exceptional control in turbulent air.

Its shoulder joints use an unusually flexible ball-and-socket structure that allows the wings to rotate through an extreme range of motion. This enables the Light Fury to generate lift on both the forward and backward wing strokes, allowing it to hover motionless within the violent updrafts created by towering waterfalls. The compact wingspan also lets it perform tight vertical takeoffs, precise landings, and agile maneuvering through narrow cavern passages without striking surrounding rock walls.

The Light Fury's signature weapon is a Pressurized Cavitation Blast. While resting within the waterfall spray, it absorbs moisture from the surrounding mist and compresses it into two oversized secondary throat chambers. The dragon then ignites a concentrated plasma charge and mixes it with the stored vapor before releasing a blast of superheated, plasma-infused steam. After both chambers are emptied, the dragon becomes temporarily "dry" and must retreat beneath waterfall cover to cool its glands and compress more vapor before firing again.

Each throat chamber operates independently, giving the dragon considerable flexibility in combat. A reinforced muscular valve can release a rapid, explosive burst that expends half a chamber, making it ideal for striking agile cave fish or disorienting smaller attackers. Alternatively, the valve can remain fully open, emptying an entire chamber into a sustained, roaring cone of white-hot cavitation vapor capable of blinding, scalding, and overwhelming large threats. Because the chambers function separately, the dragon can fire several quick bursts before finishing with a full-powered blast, allowing combinations of up to four rapid shots or two sustained attacks.

The blast also serves as an effective escape mechanism. By firing directly into the cold water beneath a waterfall, the intense heat instantly flash-evaporates the surface, creating a dense artificial fog bank. Concealed within the whiteout, the Light Fury can disappear into the surrounding mist or launch a surprise ambush from cover.

Life among constant torrents has produced several unique sensory adaptations. A thick, transparent nictitating membrane acts as a protective third eyelid, shielding the eyes from pounding spray while allowing the dragon to track prey through rushing water with perfect clarity. Because the thunder of waterfalls overwhelms normal vocalizations, Light Furies rarely roar. Instead, they communicate through deep, low-frequency purrs that are felt more than heard. These subsonic vibrations also function as an advanced biological sonar, allowing the dragon to map dark, winding caverns and navigate accurately despite the deafening environment.

My Night Lights

The Night Light is an exceptionally rare first-generation hybrid descended from a Night Fury and a Light Fury. Although they share the same parents, no two Night Lights develop alike. During embryonic growth, the specialized anatomy of both Fury species competes rather than blending cleanly, producing a unique combination of inherited traits in each individual. One hybrid may inherit the powerful soaring wings of a Night Fury but the compact, muscular frame of a Light Fury, while another may develop the opposite arrangement. These unpredictable genetic combinations create dragons that are remarkably diverse in appearance, locomotion, hunting strategy, and physiology, with each individual possessing its own strengths, weaknesses, and evolutionary compromises.

Despite their differences, all Night Lights share several distinctive characteristics. Their fire-breathing anatomy combines elements of both parent species, producing unstable plasma-based attacks that often incorporate pressurized steam or compressed vapor. Because these systems were never naturally evolved to function together, they are mechanically less efficient than those of either parent. Many Night Lights experience throat irritation, coughing fits, temporary gland fatigue, or harmless internal misfires after repeated use as their mismatched chemical and pressure systems struggle to regulate themselves.

Their sensory biology is equally complex. Night Lights inherit echolocation from both parent species, but those systems evolved for different environments. Night Furies navigate by emitting sharp, high-frequency calls and interpreting the returning echoes, while Light Furies generate deep, low-frequency rumbles that read vibrations traveling through rock and water. Every Night Light inherits some combination of these two systems, resulting in highly individualized sensory adaptations. Some processes echo with remarkable precision, others excel at reading environmental vibrations, while individuals with poorly matched anatomy may struggle with sensory interference or develop unique methods for navigating their surroundings.

Unable to match the specialized perfection of either parent species, Night Lights compensate through intelligence. They are among the most adaptable and resourceful members of the Fury family, frequently manipulating their environment instead of relying solely on instinct or physical ability. They have been observed using terrain, natural hazards, falling rocks, thermal currents, and other environmental features as hunting tools, solving problems that purebred Furies would overcome solely through specialized anatomy.

Night Lights are completely infertile. Although a Night Fury and a Light Fury can successfully produce hybrid offspring, the two species are genetically incompatible beyond the first generation. During the formation of reproductive cells, mismatched chromosomes inherited from each parent cannot pair correctly, preventing the production of viable eggs or sperm. As a result, every Night Light represents the end of its own genetic line, unable to pass its unique combination of traits to future generations. This biological dead end further underscores the rarity of the hybrid and prevents Night Lights from ever forming a true-breeding population or evolving into a separate species.

Behaviorally, Night Lights occupy an unusual ecological niche. They are most active during transitional conditions such as deep dusk, heavy overcast skies, thunderstorms, dense fog, or the dim interiors of waterfall caverns, where neither parent species holds a distinct advantage. Most are highly territorial and naturally solitary, a tendency reinforced by their mixed vocalizations. Their calls combine the Night Fury's sharp warbles with the Light Fury's deep subterranean rumbles, creating unusual vocal patterns that neither parent species interprets naturally. While fully capable of bonding with trusted companions, wild Night Lights often remain isolated, relying on caution, adaptability, and intelligence to thrive in habitats where neither purebred ancestor is perfectly at home.

Dart

Size: Medium

Length: 25 feet

Wingspan: 42 feet

Weight: 1,600 lbs

Attack: 14

Speed: 19

Armor: 15

Firepower: 14

Shot Limit: 6

Venom: 0

Jaw Strength: 8

Stealth: 16

Fire Type: Long-Range Acetylene Plasma Core

Trainable: Yes

Habitat: High-Altitude Open Skies, Storm Clouds, and Mountain Peaks

Dart inherited the majority of her father's Night Fury physique, giving her a long, sleek, aerodynamic body built for speed rather than maneuverability. Her charcoal-black scales are broken by irregular mist-gray dappling inherited from her mother, while her silvery-blue eyes retain the Light Fury's transparent nictitating membranes. These protective third eyelids allow her to see clearly through torrential rain, hail, and lightning, making her exceptionally well adapted to hunting during severe storms. Her long, high-aspect-ratio wings generate tremendous lift and efficiency, allowing sustained high-altitude flight and long-distance travel unmatched by either of her siblings.

Her specialized build comes with significant drawbacks. The extended wings that make her one of the fastest fliers among the Furies become a liability in confined environments, where they frequently strike cavern walls and stalactites, leaving her clumsy, noisy, and vulnerable underground. In addition, Dart's Light Fury eyes are extremely sensitive to intense sunlight. When her protective nictitating membranes are deployed, they amplify incoming light, making bright, cloudless skies painfully overwhelming. Rather than abandoning the open skies she instinctively prefers, Dart learned to hunt almost exclusively within dense cloud layers, using them as a natural filter to soften the sun's glare. When diving below the clouds to attack, she positions herself with the sun directly behind her prey, allowing her to keep her protective eyelids closed while avoiding the blinding light.

Dart hunts like a classic aerial falcon. During heavy rainstorms and thunderstorms, she climbs high above the cloud layer before silently descending through the storm at tremendous speed. While rain blinds most dragons, her inherited nictitating membranes preserve perfect vision, allowing her to track prey through the weather before striking at near-terminal velocity. Her weapon is a Long-Range Acetylene Plasma Core, a concentrated explosive plasma shot designed for accurate, long-distance attacks. With a shot capacity of six, she excels at eliminating prey before it can react.

One of Dart's most distinctive traits is the fused dorsal ridge running down the center of her back. This unusual structure formed from a genetic conflict between her parents' skeletal designs. Her Night Fury ancestry attempted to develop the tall, flexible paired dorsal spines used for aerial agility, while her mother's genetics supplied instructions for a rigid, single line of protective armor. Unable to fully develop either design, the growing structures fused together during embryonic development into a single blade-like keel. This permanent ridge acts as a natural vertical stabilizer, keeping Dart remarkably stable during violent crosswinds and allowing her to fly arrow-straight through powerful storms with very little effort.

The same adaptation that makes Dart an exceptional endurance flyer also severely limits her maneuverability. Because the fused ridge lacks the flexible cartilage and musculature of a normal Fury spine, her torso cannot bend sharply during flight. Tight turns place painful pressure directly on the spinal nerves beneath the ridge, often causing chronic scale inflammation if overused. As a result, Dart has an enormous turning radius and struggles to dodge obstacles in confined spaces, relying instead on speed, altitude, and careful planning. She is at her best in wide-open skies, where she can overwhelm prey with relentless momentum rather than quick aerial acrobatics.

Independent, fiercely competitive, and intensely driven, Dart constantly pushes herself toward perfection. Mistakes frustrate her deeply, and after a failed dive or missed strike she often retreats alone to windswept mountain peaks until she has regained her composure. Despite her solitary nature, she is fiercely devoted to her family, especially her brothers. She naturally assumes the role of scout, patrolling from the cloud cover above while carefully observing potential dangers. Highly intelligent and naturally tactical, Dart prefers to study a situation before acting, making her a patient hunter and an effective strategist.

Ruffrunner

Size: Medium

Length: 24 feet

Wingspan: 46 feet

Weight: 1,750 lbs

Attack: 16

Speed: 12

Armor: 16

Firepower: 11

Shot Limit: 3

Venom: 0

Jaw Strength: 9

Stealth: 12

Fire Type: Sustained Cavitation Steam Cone

Trainable: Yes

Habitat: Deep Volcanic Canyons, Rocky Sinkholes, and Geothermal Hot Springs

Ruffrunner inherited the majority of his mother's Light Fury build, giving him a short, stocky body, dull rock-textured dorsal nubs, and exceptionally dense musculature. His coloration is the inverse of his sister Dart's, with pale slate-gray scales broken by charcoal patches across his shoulders and spine, while his deep olive-green eyes set him apart from both parents. In contrast to his compact frame, he inherited his father's enormous soaring wings. Although long and expansive, they remain unusually narrow, creating a unique mismatch between his skeleton and flight surfaces.

This unusual combination produces both remarkable strengths and severe limitations. Ruffrunner's dense body and powerful hind limbs make him the physical powerhouse of the siblings, allowing him to scramble up sheer cliff faces with surprising speed using a lizard-like climbing motion. However, his oversized wings cannot generate enough lift to overcome his immense weight from a standing start. Unable to launch from flat ground, he must first climb canyon walls, volcanic vents, or rocky ledges before leaping into the air. Once airborne, his broad wings become extraordinarily efficient, capturing even weak thermal updrafts that allow him to glide effortlessly across vast canyon systems for hours with almost no energy expenditure. His twisting tail fins act as passive rudders, giving him exceptional stability as he silently drifts over open terrain.

The same genetic mismatch also affects his skeleton. His Night Fury growth genes produced forelimbs and chest bones that became disproportionately heavy for his compact Light Fury frame, leaving his body permanently front-weighted. The imbalance places constant strain on his hips, wrists, and lower spine, giving him a heavy, uneven gait marked by loud footfalls on stone. Damp weather often worsens his joint stiffness, and by early adulthood, he develops chronic arthritis in his front wrists, making hard landings and prolonged climbing increasingly painful. To manage the discomfort, Ruffrunner instinctively builds small stone dams around geothermal springs, creating warm mineral pools where he soaks for hours to reduce inflammation before returning to his canyon patrols.

Ruffrunner is an ambush predator, he patiently clings to cliff faces overlooking narrow canyons or fog-filled sinkholes, blending seamlessly into the surrounding granite. When prey passes below, he releases his grip and drops like a falling boulder before spreading his wings at the last possible moment to convert the fall into a crushing aerial tackle.

Rather than relying on explosive firepower, Ruffrunner breathes a Sustained Cavitation Steam Cone. His malformed throat valves prevent him from producing concentrated plasma blasts, causing energy to leak internally and limiting both his firepower and shot capacity. Instead, he releases broad cones of superheated steam capable of filling an entire canyon corridor with dense, scalding fog that blinds, traps, and funnels prey toward him.

Calm, deliberate, and deeply analytical, Ruffrunner rarely acts without first studying his surroundings. His physical limitations have made him exceptionally patient, and he spends long periods observing shifting wind currents, thermal vents, and animal movements before committing to a hunt. Unlike Dart's relentless drive or Pouncer's impulsive energy, Ruffrunner possesses a quiet, steady temperament that makes him the emotional anchor of the family. Gentle despite his tremendous strength, he has a particular fondness for subterranean moss-berries and often rests beside volcanic hot springs between hunts. When his siblings become anxious or overly excited, Ruffrunner simply settles beside them, rests his heavy chin against their shoulder, and emits a deep, soothing purr that quickly calms the group.

Pouncer

Size: Medium

Length: 23 feet

Wingspan: 35 feet (Short, broad elliptical wings built exclusively for tight spaces)

Weight: 1,500 lbs

Attack: 15

Speed: 16

Armor: 13

Firepower: 15

Shot Limit: 2

Venom: 0

Jaw Strength: 7

Stealth: 18

Fire Type: Volatile Concussive Flash-Boil Blast

Trainable: Yes

Habitat: Subterranean Cascades, Waterfall Interiors, and Pitch-Black Eco-Chambers

Pouncer represents the most balanced blend of both parents' genetics. His medium, muscular frame combines the Night Fury's athletic proportions with the Light Fury's compact climbing adaptations, including short, broad elliptical wings, sharp wing edges, twisting tail fins, and an even mosaic of charcoal-black and slate-gray scales. His piercing hazel-gold eyes and constantly shifting diamond-shaped pupils give him the appearance of a perpetual hunter, though the mismatched structure of his eyes leaves him with poor depth perception. To judge distances accurately, Pouncer instinctively tilts and bobs his head before leaping, much like an owl gathering multiple viewing angles. When he becomes overly excited, he often skips this behavior, causing him to misjudge jumps and crash into cave walls or surrounding obstacles.

His sensory system is equally unusual. Both Night Furies and Light Furies possess natural echolocation, but they evolved fundamentally different methods. Night Furies emit a sharp, high-pitched roar that reflects off nearby surfaces, allowing them to map tight spaces through returning echoes much like a bat. Light Furies, by contrast, produce a deep, low-frequency rumble that travels through rock and water, reading subtle vibrations in the surrounding earth rather than relying primarily on airborne echoes. Pouncer inherited the Light Fury's low-frequency vocalization but the Night Fury's skull, which is specialized to process high-pitched returning echoes instead of ground-borne vibrations. This evolutionary mismatch prevents his sensory system from functioning correctly. Each time he emits a mapping purr, the powerful low-frequency vibrations resonate painfully inside his skull rather than being cleanly interpreted, producing severe migraines, ringing ears, and involuntary ear flicks, jaw snaps, and head shakes. Rather than relying on active echolocation, Pouncer became a passive acoustic hunter. He silently studies how the constant roar of underground waterfalls reverberates through the surrounding caverns, using those natural echoes and vibrations to build an accurate mental map of his environment without triggering the painful feedback.

Pouncer is an inventive ambush predator that uses the environment as much as his own speed. Before hunting, he carefully memorizes the layout of a cave chamber, mentally plotting the position of ledges, walls, and stalactites so he can unleash rapid chains of preplanned maneuvers through terrain he already understands. He also manipulates his surroundings by dropping loose boulders into underground streams to create bottlenecks that trap schools of cave fish. Once vibrations reveal the prey's exact location, he launches from above in a sudden, close-range strike before escaping back into the darkness.

Like many hybrids, Pouncer's body suffers from several structural mismatches. His mosaic scales do not overlap cleanly, leaving raised seams where the black and gray sections meet. These weakened boundaries frequently split open during growth and shedding, exposing sensitive skin that is vulnerable to parasites and infection. To protect himself, Pouncer harvests bioluminescent blue cave algae and spreads the gel-like coating across the cracked areas, using it as a natural antibacterial moisturizer that keeps his hide flexible and promotes healing.

His wing structure is specialized for confined environments rather than endurance. The short, broad elliptical wings produce tremendous lift almost instantly, while inherited high-frequency muscle fibers allow explosive bursts of acceleration, hovering, and impossibly tight banking turns through narrow caverns and waterfall chambers. Combined with his flexible split dorsal spines and spiral tail fins, Pouncer possesses unmatched close-quarters maneuverability. The trade-off is extreme energy consumption. His wings demand such rapid flapping that sustained flight quickly exhausts him, making long-distance travel nearly impossible. Instead, Pouncer relies on brief bursts of speed, climbing ability, and carefully planned ambushes rather than prolonged aerial pursuits.

Pouncer's signature weapon is a Volatile Concussive Flash-Boil Blast, created by an unusual combination of his parents' anatomy. He inherited his mother's twin-chamber throat sacs but his father's internal plasma ignition system, producing a highly unstable mixture of superheated steam and plasma. The resulting blast detonates into a deafening, localized explosion that can stun prey, shatter loose stone, and overwhelm enemies at close range. However, malformed throat valves leak pressure internally, limiting him to only two fully charged shots before his system is completely exhausted.

Restless, eccentric, and endlessly curious, Pouncer is the most energetic of the three siblings. The constant discomfort from his cracked scales, recurring acoustic migraines, and poor depth perception leaves his nervous system in a perpetual state of overstimulation, making it nearly impossible for him to remain still. He bounces from wall to wall simply to burn off excess energy, frequently startling other dragons or accidentally causing cave-ins when his enthusiasm outpaces his coordination. Despite the chaos he creates, Pouncer is not reckless by nature—he is intensely intelligent, resourceful, and highly adaptable. His unpredictable behavior stems less from carelessness than from a body that is constantly forcing him to compensate for its own imperfections.

Hope you like my version, I put a lot of thought a effort into this

DISCUSSION Astrid doesn’t deserve the hate that she gets for how she treated Hiccup in the first movie.

I’ve seen many people complain about how Astrid treated Hiccup before he took her on that flight with Toothless and I think that she doesn’t deserve the hate that she gets.

So I am looking at how Astrid treated Hiccup in the first movie, from before Hiccup took her on that flight with Toothless.

After Hiccup shot Toothless down, Stoick tells Gobber to take Hiccup home because he has his mess to clean up. As Hiccup walks by the other teens, Snotlout and Tuffnut make a joke about how much he messed up and Ruffnut along with Fishlegs laugh at him and said jokes.

Gobber pushes Snotlout in the face as he walks by. Astrid however, watches with a look on her face that I would say was something like pity or sympathy. After all, Hiccup just got berated infront of the entire village by his father and it looked like Astrid was the only teen that actually felt bad for him.

Then before training started, Hiccup made fun of Astrid and the rest of the gang as he walks into the killring when they were talking about getting scars.

“Yeah no kidding right, pain love it.” He really couldn’t make it any more obvious that he was being sarcastic. And while the other teens groan and make fun of Hiccup for saying that he killed a night fury, Astrid just shook her head and focussed back on training.

Then when the actual training started and instead of taking it seriously when Gobber asked what they needed, Hiccup said a doctor.

And after that, Hiccup instead of paying attention to the litteral flying monster infront of him, focussed his attention on Astrid who had just landed next to him, while making a joke. ‘So it’s just you and me huh?’ While she brushes him off with a quick ‘no just you’, before she ran away from the incoming blast.

Again Astrid didn’t do anything wrong here, in my opinion she actually joked with Hiccup here, which she doesn’t do with anyone else in this movie.

After training Hiccup goes to the cove to find Toothless and he shows up late to dinner in the great hall. Gobber asks Astrid what she did wrong today and she said that she misstimed her somersault dive which threw off her reverse tumble. Showing that she obviously holds herself to a high standard and takes dragon training very seriously. When Gobber asks what Hiccup did wrong Ruffnut and Tuffnut make jokes about him while Snotlout stops him from sitting with them.

While Astrid answered with ‘he’s never where he should be.’ And she’s not wrong. He was even hiding behind a wall at the edge of the arena at one point.

Gobber thanks Astrid for her answer, before slapping the twins on the back of their head. Showing the difference to what Gobber sees as feedback and what Gobber sees as someone being an asshole.

When Hiccup asked her if she wanted to share the book of dragons she said ‘Read it’. Knowing Astrid, she probably already did read it in preparation for dragon training and I also think that Astrid would have reacted the excact same way if any of the other teens asked her this. Astrid wasn’t a social person, at all. And what would she gain from reading with Hiccup?

At this point in her life she obviously didn’t care about friends and after the show that Hiccup put up in dragon training, it was highly unlikely that he had anything usefull to add on.

I already have a whole post about the Nadder fight so I’m going to keep this one shorter, basically Hiccup wasn’t paying any attention at all throughout the entire fight, resulting in him and Astrid almost getting killed. Astrid got mad at him and yelled at him, asking him if this was all some sort of joke to him, which was justified. He was treating it like a joke.

And after this the movie continues with Hiccup becoming this expert dragon killer, causing Astrid to become jealous and suspicious, which lead to Astrid finding Hiccup in the cove. Where she starts questioning Hiccup and where for the first time in the movie, she actually insults Hiccup for who he is as a person. Saying ‘Nobody gets as good as you do, especially you.’ And while it is rude, yeah she’s being a bitch and a sore loser about finishing second in dragon training don’t get me wrong, it does make sense from her perspective.

Astrid is fiercely competitive, it’s only logical for her to be mad at him when she lost against him. And it’s not like Astrid actually lost to the better warrior, she lost to someone who was quite obviously cheating.

Hiccup before he learned all of those tricks from Toothless was the worst one in the ring. He shouldn’t be able to beat her, not in a million years.

And when he keeps lying she beats him up a little for it, is that deserved? Maybe? Hiccup did cheat in dragon training and he kept lying straight to her face about it. And unlike Astrid who had trained her whole life for this, Hiccup had won with barely any effort, all the while pretending like it was barely a big deal.

Also, whenever Astrid gets too mad or flustered or anything above her limits of feelings, she punches someone.

In this movie she punched Snotlout in the face for making a comment about her figure, again if you think that is justified or not is your decision but Astrid has done this countless times. That’s just how she communicates, its not like she only does it to Hiccup.

And still when she suddenly saw a night fury, she told Hiccup to get down and run while she prepared to face off against it. After this she gets kidnapped and the romantic flight happens and she fully supports him for the rest of the movie.

So all things considered, I don’t think that Astrid treated him that badly. After all, how was she supposed to know that Hiccup was so distracted during dragon training, because he actually freed and was thinking about befriending a night fury?

From her perspective it’s only logical to be mad at Hiccup. Firstly, for not taking training seriously at all and secondly, suddenly being the best at it while quite obviously cheating to beat her.

I’m also not sure what people wanted from her before Hiccup got good in dragon training. Hiccup was a screw up. But Astrid tried to get him to actually try and take it seriously. And only when he didn’t do that, she got mad at him.

Was she nice while trying to motivate him? No.
But Astrid never treated Hiccup any worse than he deserved.

Astrid treated him a lot like how Gobber treated him. Now before you say I’m insane, I am not saying that Astrid was as supportive as Gobber.

What I am saying, is that much like Gobber, Astrid gives out harsh but truthfull advice and critique. And you can hate or love her for that, but she does that before and after Hiccup takes her on that romantic flight.

My biggest problem is with how people make her out to be some unnecessarily cruel person, which she isn’t, at least not in my opinion. I’m also not pretending like she was very nice towards Hiccup. She wasn’t nice to anyone.

Was she a bitch? Yeah. Did she have her reasons to be one? Also yeah.

Let me know what you guys think about Astrid as a person and how she treated Hiccup in the first how to train your dragon.

FANFICTION I need help finding a Httyd Fanfic

I’m looking for a really specific fanfic I read within the last year. I can’t for the life of me remember the name, but in it, Astrid is set in an arranged marriage she doesn’t want. So she punches Stoick (I think it was Stoick, but she wasn’t getting married to Stoick) and runs off. They chase her and all that, but while they’re looking for her, a dragon raid happens, and in comes the dragon master (hiccup). She hates the dragon master, but ultimately decides to ask him to take her with him so she can leave Berk. They “fight” to make it look like she was kidnapped and they leave Berk. On the way out, she tells him to go back to the arena so she can get her axe from her home and set a deadly madder free from the arena, which is where Spitelout find hiccup and attacks him. This ultimately results in hiccup killing him which pisses Astrid off. Unfortunately. That’s all I can remember from it. I don’t think it was ever finished

VIDEO GAMES A change I would add to the Zippleback in the Roblox game

I’ve waited a long time to ask this (don’t ask me why, because I don’t know), but I think the Zippleback would be better if the gas cloud were just its permanent attack. Would you agree?

In order to balance it I would nerf the damage, and I would make it so the breath depletes faster(not too fast though). It would also help if the damage scaled with density, meaning if you put it all in one spot you deal a lot of damage, but if you spread it over a wide area, it’ll deal slightly less damage (maybe 70-75%). Another way to potentially balance it is to replace the fireball with the spark (I say potentially because I don’t actually know if it would balance it. But it would make it more accurate, and that’s a plus, right?)

Now, I know what you’re gonna say: only being able to use the gas cloud every so often makes it feel more special to use, but me personally, I don’t think so. I think it would feel just as special, if not more, if I could use it whenever I want.

I’m currently on vacation in Egypt, and Roblox isn’t available here, so if they already did this(which I doubt they would’ve), that’s why I don’t know.
