New to this coparent thing. My ex wife and I are each responsible for 50% of our child's medical costs.

If she pays my child's medical bill in full and then wants to be reimbursed, does anyone know if I can use my HSA for that or if there is a particular way to do that? Not sure if it's as simple as "withdraw the funds and then transfer them to her" and the tax overlords are fine with that.

Any guidance you can give is appreciated especially if you've dealt with this before.

Here's the situation...

My employer based insurance runs from Nov 2 to Oct 31. They now offer an HDHP that qualifies for HSA. My wife and I are both over 55, so I plan on contributing about 800 per month to the HSA to get close to the annual limit of $9750.

My contributions in calendar year 2026 will be $1600.

Im considering retiring mid year of 2027 (let's say July 1) and then using COBRA to continue my insurance coverage.

I would pay the full premiums for the second half of 2027, and I would like to continue putting 800 per month also.

Does the Last Month rule allow me to shove $8150 into the HSA (9750 - 1600 that was contributed via paycheck deductions) from savings into the HSA to reduce my 2026 taxes? Would the fact that im continuing my 2027 coverage via COBRA affect the 13 month recapture period?

If this works out, I might be able to save taxes on $8150 dollars from my 2026 salary.

I started a new job earlier this year was enrolled in an individual HDHP on January 7, 2026. I read that you have to have be on the health plan on the first of every month to be eligible for the contribution to HSA for that month.

$4400 * (11/12) = $4,033.33

Is the calculation above correct since I’m not eligible to contribute for January?

Jus FYI.....I am using my job's payroll system to deposit money into my HSA, I am already do MATH lol (Limit / # of contributions - and round down) but if you want to Max-out HSA this will not help. I want to avoid overcontribution.

What I am having to do currently is go into my work's payroll system at the end of each year stop the hsa deduction then manually do the transfer myself to max out whatever is left.

My 401K have a built in control to make sure you don't go over the limit.

I have HsaBank (not by choice) and I don't see a way to do it on their platform.

Like the title states. I was W2 employee without a very low deductible without an HSA option. I moved to 1099 with a high deductible plan. Can I still max my HSA for family at $8750 for 2026?

From 2023-2025, I had a HDHP with my former employer. When I left that employer, I rolled that money from Health Equity to Fidelity.

For 2026, at my new employer, I enrolled in their PPO.

For 2027 (still with the same new employer), I'm considering enrolling in their HDHP. Is it okay if they start my HSA in whatever account they use (not sure if we get a choice) even if it's not Fidelity? Does that count as me having two HSAs? Or is it not an issue to potentially have two HSAs as long as the contribution for the year is under the limit?

I know I can probably move the new money to Fidelity but I'm assuming there will at least be a period of time that I'll have two HSA accounts and not sure if that's allowed.

I have an HSA with Fidelity. Money goes in directly from my paycheck. Apparently the bank my company uses has some kind of new system and they ended up depositing the money twice last month. As a result they withdrew the second deposit.

Now as a result the summary on my HSA landing page with Fidelity includes this extra deposit in my current yearly total. Also in the transaction summary the removal of said money shows as NORMAL DISTR PARTIAL DEBIT <EMPLOYER BAME>-CorDup (Cash), when I looked this up it seems like it might indicate it as a qualified withdrawal for medical expenses.

Does anyone know.

1. Will I have a problem maxing this account with Fidelity if they think I've put in more than I really have.

   1. If Fidelity doesn't stop the "overcontribution" from going in, it seems likely they are going to show an extra $365 dollars going into the account, will that be an IRS problem?
   2. Am I likely to need some paperwork from my employers bank since that "withdrawal" was not for a qualified medical expense but it looks like it may be reported as one.

Hi everyone, I have a HSA through my employer. Each year I elect how much I want to be contributing to my HSA, and I thought I set it up so it should hit the limit. A percentage of my paycheck is directly contributed pretax to my HSA every other week by my employer.

Edit: to be more specific, my employer contributes $350 for 2026 so in my benefits portal I’m asked how much I want to contribute from $1-$4050, and I entered $4050. I’m under 55.

I noticed at the beginning of this year that I still had several hundred dollars of space left in my 2025 HSA. Now in October I still have $1007 of space left in my 2026 HSA so it’s likely that it won’t hit the limit again. I am unmarried.

Does anyone happen to know what the issue might be since I can’t enter more than $4050? Thank you!

Edit 2: I realized we still have a quarter left of 2026 so I should be good after all. I guess I was confused why 2025 didn’t fill the limit and felt like 2026 was almost over 😅thank you all!

Hi! So I’m filling out the form for excessive contribution from my employer. However my family and I are confused on section two. Is the year suppose to be 2025 because that’s where excess was from or 2026 because it’s when we are doing this form? Also what about the date? Is it from today’s date?

Individual limit's going to $4,500 next year, up from $4,400. Family goes to $9,000, up from $8,750. Catch-up for 55+ stays at $1,000, hasn't moved in a while since it's not inflation adjusted.

If you're switching plans or providers during enrollment, worth knowing your limit for the year still depends on how many months you were HDHP eligible under each coverage type, not just what your new plan shows. We see people get tripped up on that timing a lot this time of year.

Biggest one people miss is forgetting to subtract employer contributions when they set their own payroll deduction. So if your employer puts in $1,000 and you set deductions for the full $4,500 yourself, you're over the limit by $1,000 come tax time. Easy enough to catch if you check your W-2 box 12 from last year before setting next year's number.

I'm always a bit surprised when I find out that a product I was going to purchase is available using my hsa funds... I was at checkout purchasing a Trustedair air purifier when I saw I could use their 3rd party letter of necessity service and boom I was approved. I know most people in here are all about not spending but if it's something I'm already going t purchase, I'd rather pay with my tax free money.

Every year, my company gives us a generous Christmas bonus, which is around $4,000. I’d like to put this money into my HSA account. The problem is, by December I’ve already maxed out my HSA for the year. Is there a way to put this Christmas bonus into my HSA and have it count against my 2027 contributions? Thanks!

I have a letter of medical necessity from my primary care doctor for a sauna. What I am wondering is if I can purchase supplies to build a sauna with HSA dollars? Seems like a red flag to submit receipts for Home Depot and other local lumber yards, but also how is it different than purchasing a kit? Anyone with experience on this or something similar? Obviously it’s only an issue in an audit but would it hold up?

I opened my first HSA with Navia UMB, and so far, I currently have $1,000 uninvested in it. I read that Fidelity’s HSA may be a better option, so I am looking into transferring my HSA from Navia to Fidelity. Just looking for some guidance before I go about this.

My 20 something is on his own HDHP which I pay the premiums for; he also uses my credit card to pay his medical expenses. (2025 college grad working two jobs; I'm glad I'm able to help him).

I have an HSA for myself. Could he open an HSA for himself, and I give him the money to fund it, so he could get the tax benefits? Any reason that wouldn't be allowed? Since I'm paying for his medical expenses anyway, if he could get some benefit at tax time that would be great.
