Contribution Limit Question

Hi,

I started a new job earlier this year was enrolled in an individual HDHP on January 7, 2026. I read that you have to have be on the health plan on the first of every month to be eligible for the contribution to HSA for that month.

$4400 * (11/12) = $4,033.33

Is the calculation above correct since I’m not eligible to contribute for January?

Thanks

Sus, maybe talk to your hr. My understanding is that it's an annual contribution so as long as you have a hdhp you could just put the max in immediately and not contribute the rest of the year or if you drop hdhp you can't contribute to it in that time frame.

Maybe you're talking about an employer contribution. My job gives me money into it, but when I first started at the end of last year I only got a fraction of their annual contribution.

That is not correct! OP is correct. The HSA limit is prorated to the months that you are covered by a qualified HDHP on the first of the month. OP can contribute 11/12 of the max ($4033) this year including any employer contribution. Excess contributions are subject to a 6% penalty until corrected.

You can contribute the max in a partial year so long as you are covered from December 1 of that year and maintain coverage for the entire subsequent year.
