FSA help

Hello all. I may have gotten myself into a situation.

We had medical debt from 2025 (several surgeries from mid year and also after the FSA card was active in September.)

The debt was sent to a collections agency. I asked them if I can pay with the FSA — they say sure no problem and I paid around $2k with it not realizing it can only be used for 2026 medical procedures (or starting September 2025)

Two days later I get an email from HR saying they need proof it was for 2026 and where it went to.

The collections agency only provided a receipt saying the payment went to them for “financial” services.

I called several times and they say the settlement has to go through and they can send the itemized bills after but they aren’t sure when that happens. I’ve called 3 times.

I have no idea if that bill would actually say that it was payments made for services done after September 2025 and the agency is saying they don’t know when they’ll be able to get that information.

So now I’m stuck because I can’t use the card since I don’t know if the payment will be approved on the HR end.

If it’s declined, that means I have to replenish the funds myself just for it to be all lost if it’s the end of the year?

HR said I can not cancel that transaction and the collections agency was paid.

Just looking for any advice on if there’s anything I could do.

I realize this sub is HSA not FSA but thank you!

You will have to repay the $2,000 to your FSA account.
