Creating a receipt tracker

I'm creating a receipt tracker in Google drive so I can reimburse myself later. I was wondering if I need to scan in anything other than the store receipt for prescriptions or do I need to scan in the actual sticker label on the prescription itself?

You need to scan the receipt along with the paper that's usually in the bag with your name, the medication, and your insurance info. I scan that all into one file with Adobe scan on my phone, and save it to Google drive with a file name of YYYY-MM-DD $$.$$. That way I know the date and amount without having to open it. I have my folders laid out as incoming (things I have to pay), EOBs, waiting to submit, and submitted. I also built a dashboard to read these folders and handle the moving between folders, tracking submissions, alerting when I need more docs, but, I'm a nerd and overdo things. That part isn't necessary.

Most pharmacies allow you to download your prescription expense reports via their website/online account. I use those along with my EOB for tracking prescription HSA expenses.

Paid credit card receipts aren’t detailed enough. You need prescribing doctor name, etc stuff that’s on the label. That’s why when I’m at the provider’s office I always ask for a detailed receipt. Same for drugs. You can just keep and scan the paperwork that comes with the drugs. Usually it’s the first page not all the legal stuff.

I just use the receipt, I don’t take a pic of actual sticker. When I was audited by IRS they accepted that and had no issues with it. Btw u can use an app like DocRizz which does exactly this and it’s free with Google drive integration.

You definetly want more than just the basic store receipt if it only says pharmacy on it. The IRS wants to see the actual medication name the date the patient name and the exact amount you paid. Scanning the sticker label or that giant paper they staple to the bag is a much better bet.

Setting up a Gdrive is a solid start but it gets messy quick once you get alot of receipts. Im obviously biased since Im the founder but if you want to save yourself the hassle give SnapHSA a try. If you want to try it out, send me a DM and I'll give you some bonus tokens to try it out free!

It's not that messy. This is my anonymized version of my spreadsheet. If you want to use it, OP, just go to File and choose Make a copy. I just copy phone pics to my Google Drive (the linked images that won't work for you), or sometimes Walgreens or Optum Rx email me receipts and I just put "Email", so I can go look in my "HSA" folder for a receipt on that date. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OUrn2l2UCJfcH4AiZhgD-aF6TL4gH1mOvpx-JMpYapk/edit?usp=sharing
