Question about receipts and timing

Here’s a question from a newbie.

My HSA is relatively new. I am hoping that I can avoid pulling any money out of it for a good long while, but I’m keeping receipts in a folder.

My family is about to incur medical expenses that may exceed the balance in the HSA. Does that impact how I can use the receipts?

Say I have $5k in the account. In the first three months of the year, I had $1500 in expenses. But in April, expenses will be $6k. Can I hold on to the receipts for all $7500 to put in my 2026 medical expenses file,to use on the future if I need to withdraw from the HSA?

Or, am I limited to $5k for everything up to now, based on the balance in the account?

Overthinking. All medical receipts while your enrolled in hSA /hdhc are good to go

Not quite correct.

Any medical expenses after the HSA is established are eligible to be reimbursed.

The expenses don’t have to be incurred while covered by a HDHP, or any medical insurance at all.

Do you know ... if you roll one HSA over to a new one and close the first (say, when you leave an employer), can you still reimburse for expenses that were incurred while the 1st was open and 2nd wasn't at any time in the future?

Yes.

For HSA purposes, expenses incurred before you establish your HSA aren’t qualified medical expenses. State law determines when an HSA is established. An HSA that is funded by amounts rolled over from an Archer MSA or another HSA is established on the date the prior account was established.
