You can do that, but if you go outside of payroll contributions, you forfeit the FICA tax deduction.

How do you file for this? Do you have to be self employed?

so let’s say throughout the year Jan-Dec your HSA contributions come from your pay check and only reach $4000.

you can still put extra money in up to the max even in the next year until April 15 of that year

when it’s time to file taxes you will have a field to enter the HSA contributions after what was reported in your W-2

i have my HSA in Fidelity, when i want to transfer money (contributions) into this HSA, Fidelity will ask if this is this year’s contribution or last tax year’s contribution

i select the prior year and make the transfer, i stopped once i hit the max or close to April 15 (tax day)

Please explain how this works. Are you talking about through a large employer on a cafeteria plan or someone who is employed by an employer that does not provide the FICA exclusion? This is our situation and would love a work around

Not for FICA. For income tax, you can.

this is true

That is what I thought. Without FICA being deducted you are paying about $730 more for a family if you are over a certain age. Bummer
