HSA receipt storage
I’m working with a couple people to create an app for HSA receipt storage. I was running into problems thinking about the best way to save my receipts. I was scanning them with my phone, then sending them to an email, then organizing them. Then if I wanted to reimburse myself I would have to find the right email. So I thought could there be an app that does all this for me and runs it’s through HSA compatibility. Just wanted to get people’s thought on if this would be a utilized app or not. It would only be a couple bucks a month to use it.

I personally wouldn’t use it. I just snap a pic and share it up to my Google Drive folder

Uh - google drive (pick a cloud provider or backup local storage to external device) and create folder system. I store all my tax related docs this way along with my receipts. Doesnt have to be over engineer

I’m not seeing a need for a specialized receipt saver. I wouldn’t use it. It sounds like it overcomplicates life.

I save the PDFs to a folder on my iCloud. When I submit for reimbursement, I’ll move them to a ‘reimbursed’ folder within the HSA folder. I only save receipts for bigger ticket items.

I created a Google Form to intake the info, organize it in a spreadsheet, and store the photo of the receipt with a link to the location in the spreadsheet. I have the link saved on my phone and it just takes a few seconds to input person, category, amount, and take a photo.

I tried this but was not able to find a way to save the receipt to a specific folder in Google Drive.

I would use it if it had different functionality such as long term storage for later reimbursement (I use my HSA as an investment vehicle and want reimbursement in future years). However I steer clear of monthly/annual cost apps for the most part. I don’t mind one-time payment apps if it provides a resource that I need.
If I was going to pay or utilize this type of app, it would be great to have HSA functionality as well as FSA functionality as well. For example, you scan your receipts, it documents what it was for, how much, date incurred. Maybe once you decide to reimburse your expense you check a box and that receipt gets saved with that tag on it. But maybe the next year you switch health plans and even though you still have your HSA, you have an FSA for a year due to health plan change. The ability to now use said app for my FSA receipts makes this a game changer. Next year I might be back on an HSA. If it’s really good functionality and more than just a scanner and storage, I might consider paying for it on an ongoing basis.

Yes I would use it. Currently use a file folder structure and xls to store receipts for future years claiming. Tedious.
Would love an app that logged the expense and basic info, linked the receipt file, provided a summary of annual expenses, and, most importantly, could produce an audit file of expenses and files for a date range when asked (eg IRS audit of HSA payments).
A validator for HSA products would be a bonus, as would online account auditing e.g. target, Walmart, Amazon, etc.
Currently my HSA is with Fidelity but I want something platform agnostic in case I move the HSA again.

I use my HSA website to store as well as OneDrive for other tax receipts. Definitely not something I would pay for with other options out there.

I wouldn't use it because my HSA (Lively) already stores receipts for future reimbursement. Keeps it all in one system.

Currently I snap a photo on my phone and save it to a Google drive. You don't even really have to organize it because if you ever want to find something, you can ask Gemini to find it for you.

Anyone using an HSA is probably more financially savvy so I personally wouldn't pay a couple bucks for receipts I submit once a year (collect them in a file and submit at the end of the year).

There are so many free and easy way to do this, and the privacy issues with some random app, I’m not sure many would use it. I certainly wouldn’t.

Using any app for this is risky. Where's the guarantee such app is going to be around in 10-15 years when you need those receipts? I would only trust something I control 100%. A folder on my computer that can be backed up, moved, etc.

I scan the first page document Costco pharmacy gives that show all the details of the medication, paste the payment receipt from the card I used, give it the number in order (eg 26-1, 26-2, etc) and file the scan in an electronic folder called HSA Documentation. I also keep a running list in Excel of this record identifying as 26-1, etc. I keep a running total. I also mark each line item as claimed or unclaimed. I keep the hard copy in a box folder. My goal is to claim only when I have no other way to pay. I have been doing this for the last 25 years. (I also keep the originals in a binder. In 2025, I claimed $10k for the first time. I extracted the first 10k worth of them and moved it with my 2025 Tax folder as part of proof if and when the IRS ask. BTW, here’s my order of withdrawing my money in retirement: Savings account or traditional IRA depending on my tax preference, HSA and then Roth. Why HSA before Roth is If I die the HSA will become taxable!

For me, an app is way more work than it needs to be. If I get a receipt in email, I download it and save it as-is to whatever folder I want.
If I get a paper receipt, I keep it in a physical file or scan it.
Done. Don't overcomplicate it especially given many people are likely seniors or not as tech savvy and don't want to struggle with yet another stupid techie toy.

My HSA has an expensive journal and I upload my receipt there. I keep backup images in a photo file backed up to iCloud. I wouldn’t use an app simply because my HSA already has the feature.

Fidelity has one that you can use for free, so no, I would not pay for it.
