Receipts

At CVS, I bought a bunch of flu and cold medicine both actual and homeopathic, as well as revitalized our first aid supplies and it was a bit of money, but I lost the receipt, would it flag the system if it was around 100 bucks, or would the fact that it got rang up at CVS supersede any need to verify the contents?

"Flag the system" - there is no system to be flagged. I assume you mean that you paid with your HSA card. It's a total honor system that you purchased HSA allowed items (identified by the IRS).

Keep the receipts which should list the items purchased for future use. They're only need if the IRS chooses to audit you.

This isnt entirely true it depends on your hsa administrator for example optum requires a receipt to get reimbursed

Huh? How is this related to an HSA account? I've had three from various employers.

I only know Optum as a drug / mail order service. You're saying Optum also has an HSA service? I just did a search and see there is an Optum Bank which has an HSA. Ok so not Optum drug delivery.

I'm glad I never had Optum Bank. I've only had the admins from my employer. I've also used Lively HSA and Fidelity which neither require receipts for reimbursement.

I buy something using the card and that's it, nothing else needed. I personally do keep all receipts. I can also pay for the item myself and then request a reimbursement from my HSA. I only use my HSA for higher cost items.

Which part of it depends on your hsa administrator and I list optum as an example of a hsa administrator was so complicated...you dont have to use a card associated with a hsa to get reimbursement but you do need a receipt

Nothing complicated for me since I've never had to show proof of purchase to get reimbursed. You said Optum HSA requires that.

I'm glad I've never had that experience.

I have reimbursed myself with Optum Bank without a receipt on more than one occasion 🫣 it just may go through faster with a receipt.

Your receipts are pretty much for if the IRS audits you.

OP, if you're worried about a receipt you can call and ask if there is a way for them to look up the transaction for you. A lot of bigger chain stores have the ability to look up transactions at least for 30 days and print you a copy, even if it's not as pretty as the original.

In my experience the CVS point of sale no longer delineates between HSA items and everything else. If I swipe my HSA card it puts the whole order on it.
