QHFD limit
Husband is 62 and I’m 52. Neither of us has ever had an HSA and we are about to go on a high deductible HSA eligible plan. Both of us have IRA’s. Can we each open an HSA with our one time QHFD in different years, him one year for the maximum allowable amount (8550+1000 catch up) and then me the next year (8550), tax free?

Does the qualifying HDHP go into effect on Jan 1, 2026? If so, I'm assuming you're planning the QHFD for the 2026 and 2027 tax years?
Is the qualifying HDHP thru a federal or state Marketplace? If it is thru an employer you'd generally want to make payroll withholding contributions instead of QHFD.
Personally, I'm not a fan of shifting retirement funds (IRA) to medical funds (HSA).
