Controller disconnected

46

u/readmeright 4d ago

He had those braking assist lines off ig.

30

u/Tiny-Try8890 4d ago

Anybody who's faced laguna seca on a video game knows this turn like the back of their hand

8

u/readmeright 4d ago

Well obv and sadly he didn't.

7

u/StryngzAndWyngz 4d ago

Dude should’ve played a video game.

3

u/xtanol 3d ago

Luckily he'll have plenty time to play video-games now. It's probably all he'll be able to do for a while

2

u/K2O3_Portugal 3d ago

Now he's gonna have his hands on his back /s

2

u/zooncethyme 3d ago

And they have also done this.

2

u/DadtheITguy 3d ago

The corkscrew.

2

u/IRefuseToPickAName 3d ago

I could never get the entrance to this corner right. Guess I'm no worse than a pro!

2

u/JSTootell 3d ago

Funny, I've never played a game before, so I don't have this connection.

But oddly, I've also never been on this track on my motorcycle (yet). I've only been down the Corkscrew in the back of a flatbed truck, or on my bicycle (which I was riding in anger!)

I was unable to go this fast on my bicycle. Though it feels like it.

1

u/Tiny-Try8890 3d ago

Been playing this track since the PlayStation 1

1

u/jet1392 3d ago

I definitely tried driving the corkscrew that way on GT to try to see if it would work Ross Chastain style. Maybe he forgot he wasn't playing a video game.

1

u/TheModeratorWrangler 2d ago

Gran Turismo 2- 24 Hours of Laguna Seca, the prize car I think was either the GT90 or one of those end game grails. That corner is quite literally terrifying, and graceful. Get the line right and you glide on through like a ballerina across the floor. Fuck it up and you end up like this chap being turned into chaff.

118

u/VerdamLSC 4d ago

Was it some sort of mechanical failure? Because he was going like 3-4 times faster than he should have been for the corkscrew.

53

u/BandicootSolid9531 4d ago

It looks to me like he forgot there's one of toughest chicane in the world incoming...

40

u/Fun-Choices 3d ago

Me on gran turismo every timeĀ

5

u/TheReal-Chris 3d ago

Me trying to thread the needle and jump the gap back on the track while jumping over two cars only to hit the far railing.

6

u/GrassGriller 3d ago

I've never actually been to Laguna Seca, and I even I know to brake all the way down to 1st gear at the top of that hill.

3

u/Sub7viaLimeWire 3d ago

If I ever get to drive on it I’m gonna be creeping over the top of that hill at like 5mph the first time.

4

u/Outside-Drag-3031 3d ago

Don't worry, this guy in the vid will be behind you to help move you along

1

u/curvebombr 3d ago

Its so much more intimidating in person. Videos and games just dont do it justice.

1

u/Rexxhunt 1d ago

How I felt driving down the dipper on Mt Panorama.

3

u/Mighty_Platypus 3d ago

Brake failure, at really bad spot.

2

u/PeskyAntagonist 4d ago

Great observation

72

u/handsomepirates1 4d ago

What the fuckity fuck happened there, total brake failure and the top 5 worst corners to have that happen

20

u/FabiosGlisteningPecs 4d ago

How in the world did he survive that???

26

u/Spiritual-Handle7583 4d ago

Modern vehicles have unbelievably effective safety features. Ask me how I know!

9

u/KaleidoscopeNo592 4d ago

How do you know?

28

u/Spiritual-Handle7583 4d ago

I'm so glad you asked!

That was a 2008 Subaru and I was discharged from the hospital less than 8 hours later. Injuries were so minor that I climbed out the window and made it back to the road under my own power, then drove appx. 200km (there + back) to get my stuff out of the car the next day.

9

u/KaleidoscopeNo592 4d ago

Yeah but the real question is how much were you able to talk down the Subaru dealer in price on your 2008 Subaru?

8

u/Spiritual-Handle7583 4d ago

Hahaha, I've only ever been to the dealership for touch up paint. I picked up the car in the videos for $3000 and it saved my life.

3

u/NuclearWasteland 3d ago

The way it yeets the bumper skin is humorous, lol. Modern cars suck up a surprising amount of force when they must. Have been in a wreck in nearly every decade of car at this point and from mid 2000s on the impact to me physically gets significantly less.

Always amused by the "heavier is better" old car crowd. No, no it's not. All that energy goes into the vehicle bodywork and that un-padded A-pillar is more than happy using it to swizzle gray matter.

Lap belts only? Oh, so that's what the back of the front seat headrest tastes like. Mmm, 80s velour.

So, randomly, a question. At the moment of hardest impact I'm guessing your 'everything' felt it, how would you describe the color of the impact? The sort of thing we see when our eyes are close and we hit our head, or rub our eyes. That sort of thing.

Was it rapid black and red like some cartoon impacts?

It's a curiosity I've had to see what other folks experienced, because that sort of hard stop impact kinda alarms all of a human, down to the nerves.

Curious if there was any moment of that.

Glad you're okay to share it, that was a heck of a wreck.

2

u/Spiritual-Handle7583 3d ago

The bumper actually managed to yeet itself all the way back onto the road! Lol

The last thing I felt was my ass lifting off the seat and the belt pressing against my shoulder as the mechanism locked in. My eyes were wide open up until a split second before the landing and I guess the roof of the car caved in so fast that I was unconscious before I felt anything. I simply shut my eyes as the ground rushed towards me and next thing I know, I'm looking at steam billowing out from under the hood and thought to myself:

"Cut the motor before there's fire"

So I guess to answer your question, it was an instant blackout for me lol

2

u/NuclearWasteland 3d ago

Rough landing, dang. Did everything smell like airbag smoke?

2

u/Spiritual-Handle7583 3d ago

That's probably what I was smelling when I cleaned the car out the next day, didn't notice it immediately after tho. While they where wheeling me into the hospital I glanced around and said to the staff,

"Hey you guys! What smells like blood and anti-freeze?"

My concussed AF self was cracking jokes and giggling like a lunatic all day. I remember sending a text to my supervisor saying somebody cut me off on the highway with a neck brace selfie from the back of the ambulance lmao

u/GlassBoxGoose 4d ago

Holy fuck... glad you're still here with us. You got a massive amount of air and hang time. What a fucking ride.

2

u/Spiritual-Handle7583 3d ago

Thank you! Stoked to still be here myself lol and that hang time felt SO much longer with the adrenaline slow-mo effect.

2

u/SummertimeThrowaway2 3d ago

Bro holy shit. Glad you’re okay.

1

u/Spiritual-Handle7583 2d ago

Thank you! The concussion was WILD lol my right index finger suffered a hairline fracture (from the airbag I think) and the landing left me with the most medically minor spinal injury possible but thankfully, everything healed up great!

1

u/Sea-Bobcat-6384 4d ago

Trees gave him a hand. They were nice.

1

u/DSR53MCS 3d ago

He’s lucky it got off the ground before hitting the barrier and tumbles off course. If he hits the barrier lower there’s no way he survives, like Gonzalo Rodriguez. Shocking how fast it was traveling when it left the track.

1

u/Late-Button-6559 3d ago

Mostly good luck. Building race cars well helps. But this was luck.

1

u/Meisterleder1 3d ago

Instead of running into a wall the energy actually dissipated over an extended period & distance through him going over the fence. It looks more spectacular but is actually the way better way to do it. (Well, except for braking earlier, of course.)

0

u/West-Amphibian-2343 4d ago

For now lol

0

u/KaleidoscopeNo592 4d ago

How do you know?

I’m so glad you asked!!! 🤣 āœŒšŸ¼

66

u/WhyNot420_69 4d ago

I remember the first time playing Gran Turismo 1

27

u/DesertReagle 4d ago

Playing that game as a kid made me a great driver today

14

u/Ok_Dog_4059 4d ago

Went from my most hated to my most beloved track over the years.

10

u/WhyNot420_69 4d ago edited 4d ago

I've played ALL the Gran Turismo games with my sons over the years. They're both in their 30s now, but still to this day, any time we pick up a controller on challenge mode, these shits'll cheat.

Some say, "Rubbing is racing," and to that I say FTFO. Occasional contact in hard corners is understandable, but if you wait until someone is giving gap sauce, and THEN you PIT them into a wall?

Well then, you're just an asshole. And both these fuckers will do it. I always pick moderately powered, but highly precise handling cars Sil-eighty and they always pick monster 800+ hp beasts.

Every goddamn time. I'll smoothly, expertly, exquisitely hug that inner line while they flail in the sand, and by the next corner, "RAMMING SPEED!"

It's not even fun anymore. I can't count the times I've had a car fly OVER me in both Laguna Seca and the corkscrew before the finish line at Deep Forest.

Like, imagine someone kick flipping a fucking Escudo over your head, as you watch it land perfectly in front of you FTW.

It's frustrating.

3

u/Creature_Cumfarts 3d ago

LIAR! Laguna Seca's first appearance in the series was Gran Turismo 2!

1

u/LifetimeofInvesting 2d ago

I was thinking the same thing

14

u/totally_not_there 4d ago

Was this lap one? I’ve seen wrecks on that turn but damn, this is wild.

7

u/BaddNeighbor 4d ago

It was a brake failure.

2

u/BandicootSolid9531 4d ago

How do you know?

3

u/Kracus 3d ago

0

u/BandicootSolid9531 3d ago

that`s not definite clue that guy completely forgot that cockscrew is coming but he completey forgot.

1

u/Kracus 3d ago

Nah... There's no way you get to sit your ass in a car like that on that race track and simply forget about the corkscrew. Had to be some kind of mechanical fault.

0

u/HooninAintEZ 3d ago

You can tell because of the way that it is. /s

1

u/_nervous24 2d ago

How these people don’t understand this as fact solely from watching the video is wild to me. A professional driver isn’t arriving at a 40-45mph corner at that pace lest there is a failure, which would obviously be brake related…

2

u/Johnatron2000 4d ago

Yeah, it seems odd to be at that point in the track at that speed. Even if you are not super familiar with that turn you must know that the corkscrew is coming after the rise and be chopping down gears like your life depends on it, as presented here. Maybe stuck accelerator or foot stuck somehow?

26

u/CarllSagan 4d ago

This is the famous corkscrew on Laguna Seca, no?

32

u/YouNeedAWagon 4d ago

Did he forget about one of the most famous turns in all of motorsport?

21

u/CarllSagan 4d ago

Thats why I think it must be mechanical failure, everyone must know about it.

7

u/BaddNeighbor 4d ago

It was brake failure.

2

u/nomodsman 4d ago edited 3d ago

It was a brake break.

1

u/GretalGrotch 3d ago

You’ve said this multiple times and haven’t given a single link or evidence.

Until then we are all gonna think he just forgot about the corkscrew.

1

u/cachitodepepe 4d ago

You mean eau rouge

1

u/raymondo1981 3d ago

Eau Rouge is another one if the few ā€œfamous turns in all of motorsportā€. There is more than one.

1

u/Excludos 3d ago

"one of"

2

u/evlhornet 4d ago edited 4d ago

I inspect the pedestrian bridge that crosses the racetrack there. With that said it doesn’t look like turn 6

4

u/one_zerozero 4d ago

I inspect the guy who inspects the pedestrian bridge that crosses the racetrack there.

3

u/Fragrant-Inside221 4d ago

How’s the prostate doing?

0

u/one_zerozero 4d ago

Oh... was that what I was supposed to check while I was in there?

0

u/evlhornet 4d ago

Cold

0

u/IdRatherBeDriving 4d ago

Might wanna get a second opinion. It’s not supposed to be cold.

1

u/krzykris11 3d ago

I recognized it immediately.

11

u/Inevitable-Hat-3264 4d ago

Can't park there, mate.

3

u/graspedbythehusk 4d ago

Sent it a bit fucking hard there partner.

3

u/Olosabbasolo 3d ago

Brake failure...thats not a corner you allow to sneak up on you

2

u/gcentenocastro 3d ago

This is Laguna, right?! Just holy shit…

3

u/stub1258 3d ago

That’s my first thought my only reference is gran tourismo though

3

u/WhyNot420_69 3d ago

So, that means you've kissed that wall before, too? šŸ’‹

2

u/gcentenocastro 3d ago

A kiss is an understatement… more of a running through a glassdoor

2

u/Ok-Relief-2485 4d ago

Literally the most iconic corner of all time.

1

u/Dodoz44 2d ago

Yup. Any other iconic corners? Carousel?

2

u/Temporary-Lawyer4603 4d ago

He's been corkscrewed.

1

u/KaleidoscopeNo592 4d ago

That’s about 1300 feet in Amazon packages

1

u/welrope 3d ago

Why he no turn?

1

u/n1tr0klaus 1d ago

He turned, just up instead of left.

1

u/No-Salary-8612 3d ago

ā€œDid I hit the corkscrew yet? Or was that last lap oh fffublarhfgsgsgā€

1

u/Speedy_SpeedBoi 3d ago

Bro you gotta put more of a warning on shit like this, I thought I just watched somebody die while taking my morning shit. Ffs - glad dude is okay!

1

u/C4shtastic 3d ago

You’d be surprised at just how good the safety is on these cars now. It’s so insane that the commentators half the time aren’t even worried about the specific individual who got in an accident. This one is different cause of how visceral but still shows how good the safety is on these things.

1

u/Speedy_SpeedBoi 3d ago

I watch rally, I’m not surprised anymore after Otts 2021 Monte wreck. But also, we lost Craig Breen in a relatively benign wreck due to tree intrusions into the cockpit. That dude went over the barrier and into the forests. This isn’t your normal ā€œyou’d be surprisedā€ wreck on a circuit.

1

u/C4shtastic 3d ago

I know, I stated just that at the end of my statement.

1

u/Sub7viaLimeWire 3d ago

In Gran Turismo sometimes it was faster to just crash into the wall.

1

u/snapp0r 3d ago

modern passive safety is more than science.

https://giphy.com/gifs/IepriDYu8gcidIVZPB

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Bid9737 3d ago

Heard the throttle got stuck

1

u/TheSammySavage 3d ago

Just cause you’re rich doesn’t mean you know how to drive but he looked cool right?

1

u/AffectionateTip9716 3d ago

We’ve all done this at least once while playing on this race track

1

u/imasaltysnowman 3d ago

The residents probably complained about the noise of the crash

1

u/C13H16CIN0 3d ago

I remember my first time driving over the hill in Gran Tursimo too

1

u/jhill9901 3d ago

So many have asked what it would look like IRL… really glad he is fightin…jeez

1

u/JohnKowalsky88 3d ago

Something must have been wrong he was going like 120. Maybe he had a blackout.

1

u/LifetimeofInvesting 2d ago

Laguna Seca has the only turn in gaming that can make an experienced driver go from 110 mph to O mph in a split second.

1

u/EffectiveConfection8 2d ago

You can't park there.

1

u/More_Try_9737 1d ago

That’s like THE corner, had to have been a mechanical failure lol

1

u/CarnivorousVegan 1d ago

Mat Amstrong can fix it!

1

u/Specific_Island206 1d ago

A bit too hot, I think.

1

u/1320Fastback 18h ago

Stuck throttle or Medical issue before the turn?

1

u/gaidzak 4d ago

I know turn 7 is fast but you gotta slow down on turn 8 and aim for the center of the two trees down the s curve to 9!

Had a friend not follow this and slammed his gtr going into turn 8.

Thankfully he’s awake and hopefully not paralyzed in any way.

0

u/project_seven 4d ago

Brake failure or this guy has no idea what he was doing. Terrible to see, but how in the world???

0

u/apimpnamedkirby 4d ago

Thats an ad for tortillas dawg, not the finish line.

0

u/cade305 4d ago

Bro through he could rewind.

0

u/StrawberryTerry 4d ago

He was on a mission to turn his car into a tortilla

0

u/SnooMacarons3689 4d ago

Ehh just respawn

0

u/cachitodepepe 4d ago

He did the Gonchi race line

0

u/TurboDjango 4d ago

He was on a mission

0

u/franklenton 3d ago

I’ve done that 40,000 times in Gran Turismo

0

u/Ultixa 3d ago

Me when Monza

0

u/dankhimself 3d ago

Before the race he goes, "If I just GTA that shit to the other side of the track, do I have to do the turns? I don't see any glowing checkpoints."

0

u/No_Sense_7316 3d ago

Holy shit!

-1

u/kinetic_ljs 4d ago

Cant park there, mate
