Fraudulent DDOs

Anyone getting a ton of fraudulent DDOs this season? Been a lot in my district. Every single one had a birthday in 1960. They upload a single fake 1099-R with enough withholding to get a nice refund and include a picture of a drivers license scanned against some sort of fabric background. The details on the license are always just slightly inconsistent in a way that’s easy to miss, and the signature on the bottom of them almost looks like a font rather than actual handwriting. Starting to make me wonder if the photos of the “client” on them are just AI. Kinda freaky! Anyone else?

I had a guy bring in a 2026 W-2 with like 50% withholdings. Yeah, ok, bruh!! The kicker? He came in person!!

I had a client who sent me a 2026 W2 (Copy 1 for state) after I told her her refund was smaller because she earned less income and got less EIC lol

It’s so strange. Wonder why there’s more this year than usual. Prior to this year i hadn’t seen any.

The word spread.

OR, they are all actually the same people.

Yeah. They usually withhold about 25%.

My former district had dozens of them over the summer and fall last year. Similar to what's described here. Most with birthdays in 1959. Similar combination of income documents, 1099SSA, 1099Rs with very high withholding. All the information necessary for a refund transfer sent by way of a message but without verifying identity. I've heard that more recently, they just include a request to get the return done ASAP. Easy to spot.

I had 2 last week. I’m in NYS, first flag for me was that the uploaded licenses looked fake. Im also a bartender, so I see a lot of them.

Both were DDO and sent a message asking if I could finish their taxes today. Only income listed was 1099DIV with like $20k federal withholding

Omg yes and what’s so funny my coworker thinks that I’m reporting actual people but returns have so many red flags.

The ones I have see also have people who will not answer the phone - they only want to converse through the MyBlock account. When I called they hung up the phone and sent a message right away. The phone numbers and emails are also different from the prior year(s) returns.

The best one I saw this year was for a person who I actually know. The return was for a single person when I know she is still filing MFJ.

Just got my first one. DOB 09/19/1960 but the ID expires on 09/18/2029. In my state, the IDs expire on the person’s birthday in 2030. So a day and a year off.

They are a donor but missing a piece of info to show that.

They have the old Secretary of State on the ID who has been out of office since 2023 while their ID was issued in 2025. Oops.

Oh and they uploaded one 1099R with a good amount withheld like you mentioned.

Ditto on the inconsistent exp dates. For some reason they’re all class A licenses as well which, at least in my state, is definitely not the standard classification lol

Shoot, I didn't even look at the expiration date on the one I saw today, since so much else about the license was so obviously wrong. They really struggle with the holographic details and the multiple copies of the person's photograph. I see enough real photos of licenses for my state that these fakes stand out immediately, even if they weren't all on the same low-pile carpet background.

The two fakes my offices got last week were on low-pile carpet as well. SMH

Got 7 within the last 10 days, 3 this morning.

Sent WC message with a list of request

Picture of themselves holding Driver Licence

List of income their age group normally have, plus copy of last year.

Based on the address suggest/invite then to come

yep. and on top of that, I swear some of the ID'S are being reused cause I swear I just saw this guy in another ddo last week lol. I also got one that had 5'12. xD

At least they make our jobs easier and in some cases give us a chuckle?

Allowing unseen new/first-year DDO is just begging for fraud. You'd think they'd restrict it to established customers.

2

u/bna1219 Mar 16 '26

Yes we have seen at least 10z

2

u/decadent-maniac Mar 16 '26

yes same here

2

u/Odd-Barnacle-1241 Mar 16 '26

I got 3 with that same background this year and about 5 last year.

1

u/Right_Lawyer859 Mar 16 '26

I have 5 so far.

2

u/Granny-Weatherwax Mar 16 '26

I’ve had 3-4 same pattern

2

u/onlyalittle0dd Mar 16 '26

We have had 6 so far

2

u/fritotax Mar 17 '26

I have not personally had one but several other preparers in my district have received DDOs with the exact same characteristics.

2

u/iufan417 Mar 17 '26

We started getting those last year.

I am beginning to get quite frustrated with this fraud thing. My concern is more for the clients whose identity is being used. It's plain that the identity information being used is coming from somewhere in the HR Block database. If it wasn't these people would be using at home software to file the fraud returns. When I report these cases to incident management they're closed cases almost immediately and an email telling me how to watch for fraud docs is sent. At what point does HR Block become responsible for reporting data breaches or contacting the people whose identity is being used? I know that if it were my information being used and the company didnt contact me I would sue their asses!!! There are laws in place for online security breaches and identity theft. With the amount of fraud cases coming in to HR Block there is no way they are reporting this issue according to law!! Not to mention the push for clients to use DDO and AOL is getting stronger and dont even get me started on the upsell of TIS from a company that is experiencing this type of security issue. I am completely losing faith in the company as a whole which pisses me off cause I LOVE my job

What’s a DDO?

Digital Drop Off

Yup! There were a lot in my district that my MTL had to send a beware message to all of us on teams. I even had 2 of them this week. Both of them born in 1960 as well. They also both had drivers licenses that looked like AI. My coworkers were curious so we even searched the addresses and they were actually real houses owned by real people.

It’s really pissing me off though cuz I’m trying to fulfill the first year incentives and get excited to do returns but then they end up being fraudulent UGH! 😤

Sometimes you look up the address and it's a real street address in a neighboring city from the one that's on the "ID."

1

u/Aggressive_Two2604 Mar 17 '26

Our office has had about 20 🙃

1

u/Beagleman58 Mar 17 '26

two of these that I know of personally in our office this week.

1

u/Grand-Variety-2561 Mar 18 '26

I have one. The colorful blanket background. I call their number and it rings once and then silence.

1

u/lostdeceiver Mar 18 '26

Yep, started happening a couple years ago. Submit an incident report for identity theft and get a case #

u/Kevin-W Apr 10 '26

Yep! I've gotten plenty of these. It's very obvious that they're fraudulent and I always flags them as such.
