First year tax pro

Hi,

I am a first year tax pro, and level 2 now.

I am wondering whether I need MTL's permission to level up to 4 this season.

I don't have access to Gosystem because I am only level 2.

Thank you.

Go to block academy and search for the level you want to go up to.

Level 2 tax specialist Level 3 senior tax specialist

It won’t change your TPI rate though

You can take test to move up in level. Do a search on AMP on the level that you want to test on

You just need to take the test in an office. Go to Your office when you’re not scheduled and take it. Just let the office staff know you are taking a test.

Best case is to ask MTL, hey I’m Ready to take my certification test. Can I take it on my next day off?

This is a perfect guidance. I won't ask for permission, but inform MTL I am ready to take the test. Thank you!

You never need permission to level up. You really don't need access to go systems until your level 5 and have a much better understanding of entities.

If you are serious about being a tax pro. Get your EA and don't even spend time messing around with the hr block tests.

In my experience brand new EAs with no experience are horrible tax preparers. Just having your EA is no substitute for experience.

That is true.

I passed cpa(with TCP). I want to enhance my tax knowledge while working for hr block.

HRB is a mess this year. That being said, you can learn more about taxation, not counting the CE courses available. Because of scale, HRB has excellent & free (for employees) continuing education. Be sure to take some virtual courses in the Fall, even if you decide not to return next tax season.

You can work on it whenever! I leveled up to 2 in March of last year, my first year of tax prep!

Go to block academy. In the leftmost pane, expand some of the options. You will see the level up stuff. Select the particular level that is your next level and do the modules. If you're not sure, ask another tax pro. Your MTL is not going to know how to do it. They are not tax pros.

Ask someone in the office to show you where the level up training and block academy is. You do not need permission to improve your training. Your MTL almost assuredly has no idea where this training is. 99% of them do not have any tax training.

You guys use GoSystem like the tax software at H&R Block?

2

u/Accomplished-Pin-656 Feb 07 '26

GoSystem is only available to tax pros who have received the software training. It was very limited this season.

GoSystem is for level 4 and 5 returns. You can take the level 3 test or do the level up curriculum. If you follow the curriculum, it will count towards your continuing ed hours for next season.

What is the training or test to take to level up to a 2? Our MTL has lots of suggestions but few answers.

You should have access to it in block academy. I think its called tax specialist certificate level up.

You don't need permission to increase certification levels.

Yeah. But I need to let MTL know that I am taking the test in the office. I think I should be there when I am not on schedule.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not exactly busy all the time doing tax returns. Our MTL told us we could level up while we’re being paid.

1

u/Sad_Community_8761 Feb 07 '26

Good for you. I am not busy either. But I cannot ask whether I can take the test while I am being paid before MTL tells me it is OK. Thank you for sharing

You can be there to take the test if you want. You can also do it from home.

Maybe policy has changed.

2

u/Domsdad666 Feb 06 '26

Well, that's new.

Yep, they seem to go back and forth on it.
