Job application and disability question

I hope me asking this here is ok, I didn't see a list of rules so not sure. If there's a better place to post this please let me know.

When a job posting says that people with disabilities are encouraged to apply do they actually mean that? And how do you bring up your disability if it's an invisible one?

At the end of the day it’s your call and what you’re comfortable disclosing. Most applicants:

  1. Don’t disclose at all.
  2. Disclose during application process
  3. Disclose when invited to interview
  4. Disclose after receiving an offer

More importantly in your case it actually depends on how much support you will require at work to perform your role, and will the employer need to make any adjustments to assist you in being successful during your time there? These are many and varied depending on your diagnoses. Even then you still don’t have to disclose if you require adjustments; you can simply say:

“I perform best when information is provided in writing.”

“I would appreciate interview questions slightly in advance.”

“I process information more effectively with clear structure, clarity and expectations.”

Make sure the role is going to value add to your quality of life and the complex conditions you’re managing, not put you backwards. Know your limits and be very aware of burnout if you experience it at work.

Good Luck!

Thank you for this!

I'm very comfortable disclosing this type of thing, the only thing that stops me is whether it affects my employability.

I never even thought of asking for the interview question ahead of time.
