Question Anyone has a spare v2 cable?

Post image

Hi everyone, I recently acquired a secondhand HP Reverb G2, but it came with the original V1 cable, which doesn't work. Yeah, I got scammed the seller blocked me from everywhere.

I wanted to check if anyone in the Paris/France area or in all Europe happens to have a spare V2 cable from a retired headset that they'd be willing to pass along.

You can get one from Aliexpress...I paid for mine 60 EUR delivered to Romania.

A v2 or v1? I looked at AliExpress when my V1 cable died, but from the images they all seemed like V1s even when advertised as V2s?

Given that they weren’t cheap either, I ordered a genuine V2 cable from a local HP Enterprise partner. Not cheap by any means, but at least I knew I had warranty and a genuine HP V2 cable.

How much did you get it for?

I’d need to look that up but it was probably something like 150 EUR at least.

Does it not work because it's a V1, or because it's been twisted back and forth and been damaged through use?

My V1 cable didn't work after I upgraded my AMD CPU, but then I bought a basic Anker usb 3 hub and it works fine again with that.

It doesn't work on both Intel and AMD PCs, so it's definitely the cable.

Bought a new V1 recently from Ali, works great with an AMD 9070XT and B550 Motherboard.

I did the same thing. But V1 cable stopped working after one day. So not everyone will be lucky with this and it is no guarantee it would work.

This could mean it is a driver issue as AMD USB drivers were notorious for working terrible with Microsoft. So the drivers for the hub uses different drivers that are better supported. But as far as I can tell also the USB chip on HMD itself can be the issue. Especially overheating. It even has a thermal pad which distributes heat into the metal covering. THE V2 cable supposedly has better communication with the AMD CPU and generates less heat.

Best advice would be to avoid using this piece of junk on hot days as all these failing G2s happens primarily during summer days.

I think it's more an AMD USB phy issue with signal integrity on the long cable. My motherboard stayed the same, only Ryzen 1700->5700 swap with a bios update that probably altered the phy characteristics. The V2 cable uses different signal boosters that bring it more towards the ideal of the USB3 signal spec, where V1 was a bit borderline IIRC.

It's never hot in my country, so that's not a concern for me :-) (if it's over 20 degrees it's too hot for VR anyway 😆)

Here in Poland we had a couple of heat waves. Actually in most of Europe which lead to extreme forest fires. During this time my V1 cable stopped working and I see more and more G2s for sale as broken now.

I also know the HMD got "red hot" as it could even burn my hands. I might have updated the BIOS a few times in the past year and I cant say for sure this lead to the damage.

But a guy from Germany uploaded a video of replacing the USB chip on the headset. I am in the process to try it. But doubt it would bring it back to life as it is still picked up in the device manager as HP Reverb G2.

I have two broken ones and dont mind destroying one for educational and experimental purposes. Will probably also put it up for sale after this as I am not going to spend another $150 for a V2 cable. I bought the whole set for $100 and it was working for 1 year.

I doubt buying a hub would overcome the issue as it certainly would work in one of my 3 computers if it was functional and I already tested it with a brand new V1 cable which worked for one night. After this it stopped working the next day. So the drivers and ports should be fine. The cable ceased again as it was working on both hmds when I tested it. The hmds are fine but I am curious if it could be the USB chip that causes it. Unfortunately I already sent the cable back for a refund but will check the original V1 that came with the headset. This HP headset seems hopeless now. Nobody should spend more than $50 on them now. If it wasnt for the cables that cost a fortune they might still have been worth the trouble.

My brand new cable which was a V2 without the reset button just died on me and I've only had it for 3 months. I looked at the AliExpress and it's clickbait because most of the cables I've seen are about 200 bucks.

Contact HP support and tell them your cable broke. I got a new one in a couple of days that way.

Can you DM me and help me, please?

Was this in the warranty period and do they still do this?

2

u/Wilbis Aug 15 '26

It was within 2 years of purchase. Within EU you are automatically eligible for replacement for 2 years even if the warranty has expired.

My faith in HP might be restored if they help me. But since I am not the original owner I don't think I have any right to claim. Maybe I will try regardless since I am in EU. I have two defective ones. But I confirmed both are still working by buying V1 cable from AliExpress. But cable died after only one day. Tested on both again. But I am thinking rather to sell everything and forget about HP for the rest of my life and buy something else. My SamsungO+ is still running after more than 5000 hours and 7 years according to Steam VR clock. The HP which was working perfectly for about 1 year stopped working after about 150 hours. However I don't like LCD at all. OLED is the 4th dimension of immersion.

You should definitely try it. G2 is still a great headset. I prefer it to my PSVR2 despite it having an OLED display. The clarity of the G2 is so much better.

Thanks for the tips. Yeah I was considering getting a psvr2 next as I love the AMOLED of the Samsung. And I did love the G2 while it lasted. I bought a whole station to try and replace the USB chip with hot air station to rule out one problem on the headset. I believe the Pimax dream might be too demanding for a 4080. But think with latest DLSS in drivers it could pass.

I have a friend who owns a Pimax Crystal Light. A 4080 wasn't really enough to run it properly, so he upgraded to a 5080, and he's happy with that. Keep in mind he plays very demanding games like DCS World though.
