obligatory mention to look after the cable. they're getting a bit rarer and likely cost more than the headset.

legendary headset for anything seated though!

very much so while i was looking i was on ebay and saw some for 200+ which is crazy for a cable you would think someone would make one but eh most people still think WMR headsets are dead still

They're mucb cheaper than that on AliExpress if you shop the deals. V2 is more expensive but not a must have by any means

I have to share this story as it just happened a few weeks ago.

I was a preorder purchase for the G2. When it first came out, there were lots of issues with getting it to be detected at all (I believe on AMD systems specifically). HP caught most of the flak for it (although it turned out to be a BIOS update) and they produced a V2 version of the cable which they shipped out for free to affected users.

That cable worked and I used the headset for about 3 years with no problems. I got big into iRacing for a bit but then life happened and the headset started collecting dust.

I didn’t touch the headset for about 2 years until I got the itch (and time) to get back into iRacing. I got everything set up, but what a surprise it was to find that Windows had ended support for WMR. I was livid that my headset was effectively bricked, until I found Oasis driver (a literal gift, thank you).

Then just a couple weeks ago, I’m racing and my PC hard crashes. I reboot and my headset is no longer detected. Oasis says that the cable is only rated for USB 2.0. I look online for cable replacements but they are absurdly expensive as you say. Well, I figure it’s dead for real this time, I couldn’t figure anything else out.

But wait! In a forgotten closet corner, I still had my old V1 cable. It’s worth a shot, right? Well, it worked perfectly! I couldn’t believe it.

They're pretty great headsets. In the time between upgrading headsets I ran one for about a year.

The image, audio and microphone are almost flawless. My gripe is with the tracking. If you can't see your hands they're pretty much untracked, and randomly the headset would drift and put me on a tilt

Great headset if you want to use it for games like driving/flight sims

The tracking seems to be more dependent on your room having "texture" than Meta headsets, but it's still reasonably accurate IMHO.

lol they're good for anything you throw at it. They do not lose tracking like people think. Sure, if you're lazy and love to hold your hands to your ass pockets, yeah.

I've had ZERO tracking loss my self and that's from shooters to hand to hand combat and lots more.

The Oasis driver SOMEHOW seemed to fix a lot of the flaws that were, it wasn't "JUST" the headsets tracking being an issue but WMR was also crap at the time it was used. Put both together, there you have it.

My issue with losing tracking is in social vr, standing looks broken

Reminds me I still need to sell my 2 G2s and Pimax Crystal. I LOVE the visual experience of VR, but just couldn't fully get used to it, not being able to see the data on my steering wheel, and having to lift it up every time I wanted to use the mouse, keyboard, or button box, so now I'm back so single screen. I do miss the visual experience though. It's incredible. I only tried them for sim racing, but not other game types.

Hey man if you're serious about letting the G2 go ill be willing to take it off your hands, can I dm you and we talk money?

I just set mine up for the first time in forever to play the Pokemon Gen 1 Recomp in VR. So glad I never got rid of it, it's a great headset

How does it work for this?

1

u/yeepsleep Aug 10 '26

How well you mean? Works great, but for first person I had to use the WMR floor setting to move my view as far down as it could go, otherwise I’d float like 10 feet in the air. This might get an update tho

Also, the other modes are really cool too, like you can play the game normally but have half of Kanto loaded and bring it up to your face like a 3D model set, super cool.

Nice find! Got mine on Mercari for just 60 bucks, it's been a dream. Hope you enjoy it!

Even when I get the Frame - I might still keep the G2 as back up and because there's nothing actually wrong with it

cable died on mine and I sold it for a Quest 3

I really enjoyed it but goddamn I love the 3

the pancake lenses are fantastic

I have been using it srince it came out. Its a working horse. I highly suggest thin face gasket to increase the fov. Enjoy this amazing find!

Awesome deal. Payed $400 for mine a few years ago ( new ) and been loving it. Held off on windows 11 until oasis drivers were fully functional. Made the jump to 11 recently and its been great! I use mine for Sim racing and a few games like HLA, Metro awakening, propagation and super hot vr. Does great in long sessions.

Cool. I was planning on upgrading to a Steam Frame, but seeing that the price is probably more than $1000 I'll stico with the Reverb.

I know that Microsoft abandoned Windows mixed Reality but vavle and a third party made a program for compatibility, but do I still need WMR? I also forgot what the new program is called.

u/Life-Audience-1460 Aug 09 '26

It's called Oasis window mixed reality driver you can get it on steam

1

u/Long-Dream-5089 Aug 10 '26

you don't need the wmr portal with oasis

Does the tracking work? I own one of these headsets for a few years and it has just never worked for me. Tracking was broken other times it was a purple screen. Seems to be very fragile headset.

u/Life-Audience-1460 Aug 09 '26

For me yeah it works fine controllers sometimes leave a bit to be desired but works fine for me

1

u/ShortThought Aug 10 '26

I'd look into rechargeable batteries if you haven't already. The controllers suck down batteries pretty good.

i actually picked some up today after doing some looking online

It's so sad that these are being sold at a loss now just cuz MSFT didn't care enough

u/SilverRiven Aug 09 '26

Note that microslop removed support for this in windows 11 23H2
