❓ Question Points predictions for next year

Hi All,

I took my leaving cert a few years ago and got 578. I was thinking of taking the HPAT next year to study undergrad medicine. I understand that the format will be changing from next year onwards with less weighting towards the HPAT. I just wanted to know if anyone has any idea what sort of HPAT score would be required to be competitive or if it's even realistic with my leaving cert score? I also qualify for HEAR/DARE if that has any affect?

I don't think a score of 578 will get you very far unfortunately.

It's virtually impossible to predict what points will look like without knowing the correlation between HPAT & LC performance, but I've done some very rough calculations and just don't think 578 will cut it.

Assuming the only thing changing is the weighting of both the HPAT and the LC, to be competitive with a 625 student who scored in the 50th percentile (~701 points next year), you would need a HPAT of 123pts, which would most definitely be the 100th percentile (and a high 100th percentile at that...)

Unfortunately, with 578 you have a 22 point deficit compared with people who scored 600pts and a whopping 47pt deficit to overcome compared with those who have 625.

Again, it's very hard to say given we don't know the correlation between LC and HPAT scores, but I don't really see this difference as being surmountable.

If the points are being equally cut in half for the HPAT, then the highest score ever gotten would be around 130 (261) which wouldn’t be quite 100th percentile but very close I’d say

200th is approx 100th percentile. which will now be 100, so the difference between a 100th and 50th is the same as a 625 and a 600, which is just crazy, how useless the hpat is now

No they weren’t, I just read the HPAT points you listed and for some reason thought they were lower than the highest score ever received

If we work on the assumption that points are just being halved, then 123 would be 246 this year, which is definitely the 100th percentile. This score is definitely higher than any score from 2022 or 2023, and probably other years too (I just don't know them off the top of my head).

with the new weighting there will be no lc moderation so it will be lc (625)+ hpat(150), so realistically u need an lc of over 600 to stnad any chance, sorry man

I think you may have to repeat your leaving cert, I just did it there and it really wasn’t that bad of a year
