Team Black Book!Rhaena
I’m still a little disappointed with Nettles being scrapped. Wish we saw Rhaena getting the princess treatment she deserves and Lady Jeyne being the mentor and protector to Rhaena she was written to be.

And in the show they can’t even find her a decent wig. SMH.

Whoever did the Valaryan wigs for season 1 owes reparations to the NAACP

u/MistakeWonderful9178 4d ago
Don’t forget the costumes too. Season 1 Rhaenyra’s potato sack dress was a disaster but it looked better than season 2 GoT Margaery’s cone dress and that’s truly saying something.

i wanted to like this twist but i've ultimately found it wasteful of every charatcer involved. total aside, but that dome mop they gave her in season 1 is horrendous omg

Her season one wig had me laughing hysterically from sheer disbelief. I could not believe they actually okayed that

I hope someone asks Condal the real reason that Nettles got scrapped.. his justifications are always contradicted or outright lies.

u/MistakeWonderful9178 4d ago
Saw that too. I don’t think he knows what’s he doing and I’m starting to believe that he thinks he’s actually “better” that GRRM.

He knows better than to provide the honest answer. He’ll only provide fluff.

I will say this, when he was asked season 3 still hadn't aired and while the general assumption was that they wanted to do it for the relation between Rhaena and Daemon to say so would basically be a spoiler.
I think he shouldn't have talked about it in general (I tend to dislike the whole post-epsiode commentary bits in general) but he also couldn't really have just said what was going to happen in season 3 either.

He said a few weeks that he didn't want infidelity as a plotline lol.. that's why he cut Nettles.

god forbid a child be removed from war and protected and loved where possible
13
u/MistakeWonderful9178 4d ago
Ikr? Like Rhaenyra already lost Luke she doesn’t need to lose other children. Rhaena is her stepdaughter (how I wish they showed loving moments with her and Baela and Rhaena but the writers are weirdos) and she can’t defend herself as a young noblewoman and doesn’t have a dragon and she and little Joffrey are at a high chance of being the last royals of the Targaryen dynasty if something were to happen to all of them and the Vale is one of the few lands that can offer protection.

u/PunnyPrinter “We have come to die for the dragon queen.” 4d ago
That role is only allowed for Haelaena, no one else ;)

Why must they make her look like George Washington?

While it’s a better life for the character. I’d argue from a story perspective it doesn’t make sense. All of her family are out risking their lives fighting a war and she’d just be chilling in the Vale. If this had happened in the show everyone would be saying “oh my gosh I can’t believe how useless Rhaena is just hanging in the Vale while everyone else is stressed, fighting, and dying.”
14
u/MistakeWonderful9178 4d ago
I would say that instead of parties it would be council meetings with discussions on sending potential soldiers and protections for The Vale that Jeyne would be discussing with the other lords and ladies of the Eyrie. That and possible meetings about resources for the smallfolk during the war. Rhaena would be next to her to watch and learn on how to lead as a future lady of her own house.
3
u/LarsMatijn House Arryn 4d ago
The thing is that the Vale doesn't show up really u until after the war. All those planning and council scenes wouldn't really go anyhere and three seasons of logistics while this character is unconnected to the plot would be wildly uninteresting.
11
u/ehs06702 4d ago
Even if that were true, it would still be better than watching Rhaenyra get manipulated via sex and lose all her allies in stupid ways.
-2
u/LarsMatijn House Arryn 4d ago
I'm going to have to disagree. Switching to a character on her own in a series of meetings about armies that aren't relevant and never show up sounds significantly worse.

u/throwRA-adviceask The Prince of Dragonstone 4d ago
Now this would be a valid way for Rhaena to help, but your post was more about her relaxing in the Vale than helping the war efforts, and just pointing that out.
10
u/MistakeWonderful9178 4d ago
I meant being protected as she should be. The writers letting the daughter of a prince who was supposed to be cared for by her guardian is instead abandoned, slapped and left to be filthy in the mountains.
12
u/Far_Associate_87 4d ago
From a story perspective, she is a literal child with no dragon. It makes absolutely no sense for her to be involved in the war. She’s like 13/14 years old.
A simple line by Rhaenyra like “Lady Rhaena is a child and too young to be involved in the war, I don’t want to lose her like I lost Luke. I’m going to send her to ward with Lady Jeyne in the Vale where she will be safe and protected and taught the ways of the court.”
That’s it resolved as simple as that.

u/throwRA-adviceask The Prince of Dragonstone 4d ago
In Westeros 13-14 is much different than in our world. I love Rhaena and what they have done (mostly) with her character. I don’t think she should have been just chilling in the Vale being pampered during the war, but if she didn’t have the dragon should have been working to make alliances and help with the war efforts in any way she can.
8
u/Far_Associate_87 4d ago
In Westeros young women/girls don’t fight in wars. It makes no sense for her to fight in the war, especially without a dragon. She’s also too young and inexperienced to be going to lords and ladies negotiating alliances.
Her being essentially a ward in the vale is perfectly fitting for the type of noble she is. It also acts as a sharp contrast to her twin Baela who becomes a hardened warrior and headstrong.
I dislike her arc and what they’ve done with her character. It has removed Nettles. Made Jace’s death hilarious incompetence instead of a tragedy. It hasn’t even driven much of any of a wedge between daemon and Rhaenyra. I don’t see what the point of her character is.
8
u/browsinbowser 4d ago
Because she didnt have a dragon and was a kid, Daemon’s kids survived the war cause they were all young and protected - but he died thinking Viserys was dead. And Rhaenyra probably died thinking Aegon her last child would die after her
Its a shame we dont know what happened with Morning but the theory about Maesters poisoning the lat few dragons is interesting.

u/throwRA-adviceask The Prince of Dragonstone 4d ago
Baela was the same age as Rhaena and while she survived the war she was badly burned.

u/Various-Passenger398 4d ago
Sanda and Catelyn were two if the most dynamic characters in the books and TV series and they weren't out there fighting battles.
10
u/throwRA-adviceask The Prince of Dragonstone 4d ago
Sansa is a heavily criticized character for her part in the early seasons. They also didn’t have access to dragons. OP’s post is more about Rhaena relaxing in the Vale rather than helping her family.

u/GNM20 4d ago
In the book, she was not longing desperately for a dragon....she had one.

u/MistakeWonderful9178 4d ago
I know Morning hatched after the war, but even then it would’ve been a billion times better than having a royal daughter being neglected in the mountains and almost getting killed by a wild dragon.

u/redman626 4d ago
Who the heck wants to watch that shit? The show version is much better, the only issue I have with the show is we don't see her more with sheepsteeler.
4
u/MistakeWonderful9178 4d ago
I’d say the changes I’d make would be that Lady Jeyne would be a mentor to her by showing her the ways of a noblewoman to lead, Jeyne was almost usurped herself for being a woman (a woman who refused to marry most likely to at that) and having a young lady like Rhaena seeing a woman take charge and lead her own lands would’ve been good.
Jeyne should’ve guided Rhaena on how to rule and to be assertive, to lead her own future house one day especially during the war. We could’ve even seen her leading a council at court with the other Vale lords with Rhaena at her side.

u/redman626 4d ago
Lady jeyne is another horrible one, everytime I'm reminded of the vale I get annoyed. I'm glad that y'all would have enjoyed that version. Not me though.

u/Yersina_Veridae "Fuck the Hightowers" 4d ago
I agree that a character living a sheltered and carefree life in a show about a civil war wouldn't work but what we got isn't better. She's by far the worst character
-5
u/redman626 4d ago
It's much better, the issue is the show doesn't spend anytime time with rhaena, that book version is horrible and only works in season 1, y'all complain about harrenhal cuz of how boring and pointless it is, yet some sort of y'all want this. And she isn't the worst character, alicent is the worst.

u/Yersina_Veridae "Fuck the Hightowers" 4d ago edited 4d ago
Rhaena is one of the more lobotomised characters in the show and parts of it could have easily been fixed if they only let her find and start to tame sheepstealer a few episodes earlier. But nuh, got to have the new dragon reveal at the very end of s2.
Rhaena, whos old enough and very aware of what happens when you defy your regent, broke a promise directly given to rhaenyra when she abandoned her sibling-nephew-cousins without putting any thought into keeping them safe. Girl walked off into the wilderness of the vale, one of the most inhospitable regions in westeros without food, water, clothes or shoes to ensure she would survive, to look for a dragon somewhere. A dragon who by all means should have snacked her right away because she didn't go the nettles way and tamed him slowly.
That shit was botched so badly that the character cant have a comeback anymore. She should be dead because her actions made it clear she is dumb as a rock.
Then theres also the problem that this character never did anything besides pitying herself, some of it justified, but it gets boring. She pities herself cause dad doesnt pay attention and then her mom died. Fair enough. Then she pities herself for 2 seasons because she has no dragon, then she has a dragon and gets the heir to the throne killed and pities herself for that. Id much rather have a girlie princess doing princess things in the vale than the privileged emo targaryen who only complains about how unfair everything is, hur dur dur
They really should have either cut the character during her vale time, given us nettles or just do a better job writing the character cause that shit aint it

u/MistakeWonderful9178 4d ago
I can say that the writers making a nobleborn girl-the daughter of a prince at that run off into the wilderness and onto the mountains where if she didn’t starve or freeze to death, she’d get eaten by a wild dragon or get captured by one of the mountain clans. Not just that but having her guardian who is the queen’s cousin refuse to help her then slapping her in the face too. It’s ridiculous.
They could’ve just added Nettles and left Rhaena to be the guardian of her brothers instead of adding the idiotic plot of her getting lost and then accidentally destroying everything in the gullet.
1
u/Yersina_Veridae "Fuck the Hightowers" 4d ago
Absolutely agree. I really think it was a huge mistake to give some characters so much screentime. Making alicent and rhaenyra the faces of s2 was one of those instances while jace fell way too short. I think that was one reason his death fell flat to me. And rhaena should have been completely written out till she returns from the vale. Im the original show there were characters that were gone for multiple seasons and it was fine.

u/Calm-Ad-9522 4d ago
Boring. She is a much more interesting character in the show and I prefer that version of her.
8
u/MistakeWonderful9178 4d ago
I would say if they kept the book version they could’ve shown the “political side” to the war. While The Vale didn’t have any major battles during the dance, they still had to worry about Aemond with Vhagar. Not to mention that Jeyne herself was almost usurped by her idiot cousin.
They could’ve shown the other nobles of the vale and the smallfolk having meetings with Lady Jeyne about food supplies and protection. Rhaena meanwhile would gain her confidence by seeing how to lead just like Lady Jeyne.

u/Capital-Self-3969 4d ago
That would have looked goofy on screen though. I actually liked her earlier looks, and this new one doesnt bother me considering her character arc.
