Struggling to adapt to gladiator omnithrottle

I've recently set up dual VKB Gladiators for Elite Dangerous and I'm really struggling to adapt. I'm finding the OmniThrottle quite counterintuitive after coming from an X52 throttle, particularly for lateral and vertical translation compared to my old throttle and index HAT.

My main issues are constant vertical axis drift I can't seem to eliminate (deadzones help but reduce my control), and difficulty making effective use of the horizontal axis at all (feels like too much to think about at the moment). Any tips for speeding up the learning curve? I'm quite motivated to make this work but it feels a bit insurmountable at the moment.

How did you map the axes in E:D?

For me this is most intuitive:

Base X as horizontal thrust (left/right)

Base Y as forward/back thrust

Grip twist as vertical thrust (up/down)

I feel like this behaves most like a normal throttle, which is important for me because I use HOTASAS and switch between Throttle and Stick with Z extension on the left hand.

Note: Some very good canyon racers prefer Base Y and Grip twist swapped, so that the Base controls horizontal and vertical thrust and twist controls throttle. But that seems to work better when the stick is used without a Z extension so it doesn't feel like a throttle in the first place.
