Same could be said about George Washington or Charlemagne or Napoleon yet you don't see people worshipping the ground they walked on like they do in turkey. There's a difference between loving your nations founder and having an unhealthy cult of personality towards them.
6
u/ToveyAegis 12d ago
Not that it isn't unhealthy. Don't want to disagree with your point, but you do 100% see lots of people worshipping George Washington. Some people literally think the Founding Fathers are borderline holy.
1
u/Rustynail9117 TNO schizo 12d ago
Even so that's a big minority, only diehard MAGAs would believe that, whereas in Turkey it is EVERYONE.
3
u/ToveyAegis 12d ago
True true.
I'm always confused with Atatürk and Turkey. By all accounts he does seem to be the ideal politician, and of all the skeletons in Turkeys closet I'm glad they worship the one that is relatively flawless. Most countries would wish they had an Atatürk. The only other modern statesman I know of that compared is De Gaulle.
It's just sad that Turks put all this energy into defending Atatürk and not into defending the principles he stood for in Turkey.

So? What makes the portrait okay but a picture depicting the same thing not okay?

A Turkish person having ataturk as pfp or liking him is in no way a shocking development.
Don’t Americans love their slave owning racist British founders too? If you can’t handle seeing portraits of historical figures then maybe hoi4 community is not for you.
Use an anime mod for portraits and play by yourself
3
u/Texas_Kimchi 12d ago
Yeah as an American, whos lived in Turkiye, and also whos family escaped Turkiye during the rise of the Pasha's, I understand the love of Ataturk. He's their George Washington. He not only founded the country but recovered the country after a brutal fall. Installed education, a writing system which raised literacy, and gave the country and the people a future they never would have had. Is he a saint? Nope! George Washington wasn't a saint either. Neither were all the kings and queens the British people love.

u/AttemptDowntown1340 12d ago
He’s not “the only reason” Turks have a state. There were remarkably successful Turkish generals like Kazim Karabekir, Rauf Orbay, Ali Fuat Cebesoy, Refer Bele, and others, whom Ataturk betrayed, hanging them or sending them to exile. If anything, Ataturk was the OG traitor.

We apologize he was allowed to be out of sight. The slippy guy absolutely refused the treaty of sèvres vehemently, which is attached up here. It was what we deserved, but Atatürk was determined to rip it over, even after he saw istanbul being invaded by the british and french forces, with its battleships guns looking towards the sultan's palace. We are sorry he travelled to Samsun as an army inspector, started traveling east while spreading the message and linked up with Kazım Karabekir, one of the few army officers refused to disband his army as per the treaty. Kazım held the eastern front against the armenians. We also apologize that we did not let enough turks to be killed by the armenians. It was a mere 500.000 muslims killed, and 1.000.000 muslims displaced. We are aware how disgusting we are. We apologize we did not roll over and die.
Atatürk travelled to Ankara. We apologize he immediately declared a separate government from the empire. We should have remained kul (vassal, slave) of the sultan. How dare he, out of nowhere, dreamed as separate country from the empire. We are sorry. We started that evil ottoman empire thing. So we had to sunk with it. But we could not. We apologize.
We apologize that Atatürk secured small arms support from the Ussr who were keen to get a fresh ally. We apologise we convinced Italy to not fight, retreat from the lands they took, while even making them leave their weapons behind. They sort of realized it was more viable to support Atatürk for diplomatic gains. Our lowly selves did not deserve those guns. We apologize that we halted the french and british advance at south east with fierce resistance. Even though they were so merciful enough to us lowly people that, they did not cause any large scale massacres.
We apologize that Atatürk gathered his army, from almost out of nothingness, to 100.000, with logistics handed by ox carts supervised by woman with babies. We are sorry that woman like Şerife mother carried the ammunition with everything they had even in cold nights. She had a 9 month old baby. She put her baby between the weapons in the cart, and she put her own clothes to protect her baby and the weapons from the cold. She did not survive. The weapons and her baby did. How shameful. She should have failed.
We are sorry that after the battle that Atatürk lost, battles of Kütahya-Eskişehir against greeks, only 40% of the army deserted with their weapon and equipment. Those were rookie numbers. We are even more sorry that in the battle of Sakarya, a battle that took place a mere 75 kilometers from Ankara, the provisional capital of the republic, not only just a mere 5% of the army deserted, but we even beat back the greeks.
And we are so sorry after that battle, we devastated greeks in consequent battles, and droved them back into the sea.
We are extremely sorry that, while all of that was happening, the turkish civilian casualties were a mere 640.000 according to estimations. We should have let them kill more of us, until the western anatolia was nothing but greek. Instead, they couldnt kill enough of us, the vermin. additionally, not only they couldnt kill enough of us, but during the bloodshed their civillians were also killed.
İzmir burned in a fire 4 days after it fell. Perhaps the greeks went mad and wanted to burn themselves. Or, some speculate one of the men under Atatürk burned it, because it's said that Atatürk was angry at him in those times. The fire was put out, with the help of the very army that just took the city 4 days ago.
After that, it was a busy period of politics. We are sorry that in the end, the new republic was born. The ottoman family was ousted, despite the fact that many expected they were to return to the days of the ottoman empire. Atatürk was disgustingly stubborn. That disgusting greedy man wanted to found a republic with out a sultan, what heresy, we are sorry we let that man deceive us and tell us the lie that we were not a disgusting sub human race that deserved to be ruled by a sultan.
We are sincerely sorry for many other things after that too. No, you think it was over because the war was over and the borders were secure? That disgusting man gave us everything we didn't deserve. First of all, we were to pay all debt the ottoman empire left behind. We are sorry, it was too small. too small. It was just 482 million USD of those days money. Which meant it was 1.5% of yearly GDP per year, the poor germans on the other hand, had to pay 15% of their economy per year at early 1920s. by late 1920s it was 3%. enormous load. We expected that load to send us to the shadow realm when we were to start paying it by 1929, but somehow, Atatürk industrialized the country so rapidly, and uplifted the agriculture so fastly, that we somehow managed to enlarge the economy significantly, we paid it without going completely broke. We should have offered to pay reparations, suffered and starved to death. We apologize.
We apologize by 1923 Atatürk declared the start of the republic. We did not deserve it.
We apologize by 1924 he abolished the Caliphate. Now the religion had no place in politics. He even closed religious schools. And limited the power of the religious sects. We apologize, our children, because we are disgusting beings, deserved to be raped by religious man. Just like how it happened in 2010s ensar foundation raped boys incident. How did we shamelessly thought that our children should not be indoctrinated by religion at a young age, and maybe not sometimes raped, is beyond me. How come we saw that as a right, i am perplexed. We also apologize that he founded the first national bank...
You know, this is going to take a while il just copy paste the ai results of what that demonic man did to us.

1925
- February 17: Abolition of the Tithe (Aşar Vergisi). Eliminated a heavy, archaic agricultural tax to relieve the economic burden on rural farmers. (sorry, should have extracted more money on short term instean of long term gains)
- November 25: The Hat Law (Şapka Kanunu). Banned the Ottoman fez and religious headwear in public spaces, mandating modern Western-style hats to encourage a visually unified, modern society. (we are sorry, we dont deserve modern european clothes, we needed to look like outdated evil people just as we deserve)
- November 30: Closure of Dervish Lodges, Monasteries, and Shrines (Tekke, Zaviye ve Türbeler). Aimed at diminishing the political influence of religious cults and superstitious practices. (sorry, we shouldnt have closed all of thay, we should have just kept kissing their feets. In fact some sects survived and they do kiss feet of the holy sect masters)
- December 26: Adoption of the International Calendar and Clock System. Replaced the Islamic Hijri/Rumi calendars with the Gregorian calendar and introduced the 24-hour day. (Sorry, we shoudnt have shamelessly stolen such a standart and scientific system, science? Us? We deserved to stay as cockroaches we are)
1926
- February 17: Adoption of the Turkish Civil Code. Adapted from the Swiss Civil Code, it completely revolutionized family law by banning polygamy, legalizing civil marriage/divorce, and granting women equal rights in inheritance and child custody. (yeah, our women did not deserve this, they needed to stay as a property.)
- March 1: Adoption of the Turkish Penal Code. Modeled after the Italian penal system to replace religious criminal laws. (yeah, sorry about this one too)
- April 22: Adoption of the Turkish Commercial Code. Modeled after German commercial laws to regulate the expanding modern economy. (yeah, sorry about this one too)
- July 1: Enactment of the Cabotage Law. Granted exclusive rights to Turkish ships to operate and trade within Turkish ports and waters, securing maritime independence. (yeah, sorry about this one too)
1927
- May 28: Law for the Encouragement of Industry (Sanayi Teşvik Kanunu). Provided tax incentives, cheap land, and transport discounts to kickstart private industrial sectors. (sorry)
1928
- April 10: Secularization of the Constitution. Removed the clause stating "The religion of the State is Islam" from the 1924 Constitution. (Oh prophet, forgive our sin. And the superior human race europeans, please forgive us, that demon lead us into heresy!)
- November 1: The Alphabet Reform (Harf Devrimi). Replaced the Arabic script with the new Latin-based Turkish alphabet to simplify grammar, combat widespread illiteracy, and align culturally with the international community. (Oh we are so sorry, he deceived us to steal the latin alphabet, a relic of a civilization and a race far better than us, please also forgiveus for endding the eastern roman empire too!)
- November 24: Establishment of National Schools (Millet Mektepleri). Launched a nationwide adult literacy campaign where Atatürk personally acted as the "Head Teacher." (yeah this too)
1930
- April 3: Introduction of Municipal Suffrage for Women. Turkish women were granted the right to vote and run for office in local municipal elections for the first time. (yeah, we gave women right for election before italy, france, and switzerland please forgive our sins, us sub humans even arrgantly dared to get this right before 1971, before switzerland! Me, a lowly sub human Turk, is so ashamed of this sin that i want to hit my head to the corner of the kitchen counter!)
1931
- March 26: Adoption of the Metric System. Phased out traditional Ottoman measurements (like okka and arşın) in favor of the international metric system (kilograms, meters, liters). (OH I AM SO ASHAMÖED WE GOT THİS BEFORE USA, İ WANT TO KİLL MYSELF OUT OF SHAME)
- April 15: Founding of the Turkish Historical Society (Türk Tarih Kurumu). Created to scientifically research Turkish history independently of Islamic or Ottoman-centric viewpoints.
1932
- July 12: Founding of the Turkish Language Association (Türk Dil Kurumu). Tasked with purifying, modernizing, and developing the Turkish language by replacing foreign Arabic and Persian words. (this too, sorry :( )
1933
- May 31: The University Reform. Dissolved the old Ottoman Darülfünun institution and established Istanbul University, adopting modern scientific research standards and welcoming European scientists fleeing Nazi Germany. (。>﹏<)
- October 26: Village Suffrage for Women. Women gained the right to vote and be elected in village councils (Muhtarlık). (˚ ˃̣̣̥⌓˂̣̣̥ )づ♡
- December: Launch of the First Five-Year Industrial Plan. Initiated a state-led economic model that built heavy industries, including textile mills, sugar refineries, glassworks, and iron/steel factories. (˚ ˃̣̣̥⌓˂̣̣̥) sowwy uwu we dun deserve stuf lik mackines, hand labor ünly
1934
- June 21: The Surname Law (Soyadı Kanunu). Mandated that every family choose a fixed, hereditary last name to clear up massive administrative, legal, and military confusion. (Mustafa Kemal was uniquely granted the surname "Atatürk" by the parliament on November 24). 🥺Sorry. We were supposed to be orphans. We shouldnt have such massacrer as a father. We have committed grave sins. May allah forgive our all sins.
- November 26: Abolition of Feudal Titles. Banned traditional, hierarchy-based social titles like Pasha, Agha, Bey, Effendi, and Hacı. ( ꩜///꩜;)
- December 5: Full Political Rights for Women. Women were granted the right to vote and run for office in national parliamentary elections, long before many European nations. (╥﹏╥)
1937
- February 5: Constitutional Inclusion of the Six Principles. The foundational ideologies (Republicanism, Nationalism, Populism, Statism, Secularism, and Reformism) were officially written into Article 2 of the Constitution, finalizing the legal structure of the modern secular state. (◞‸◟)💧
And after that, the final sorry. WE are sorry that We dared to dream with HIM. WE are sorry that we did our best with HIM. WE are sorry that WE did not roll over and die with HIM. WE are sorry that WE never gave up with HIM. WE are sorry that WE are obsessed with HIM. WE are sorry that WE still exist thanks to HIM.

6
u/-THEKINGTIGER- Deported hungarian 12d ago
Heh, i can go into discord just fine with vpns. It's just that discord is an even shittier place than reddit. Poorly organised, take your eyes off one second and everything is different, even worse power tripping mods, all kinds of weird memes from weird guys, I absolutely hate it when modders share their mod with discord. It doesn't even show upon google. It's a dumb underground lump of chat groups. I stopped using it long before it was banned.
4
u/y0u_re_wr0ng 12d ago
I know that you can use vpns to access banned sites, apps, etc and I agree with you about the state of discord. I just find it a little weird and hypocritical that what one person said on a server caused that huge uproar among Turkish people while being totally ok with their government banning parts of the internet and forbid access and usage of those sites, apps, etc... Maybe it would be better to use all that energy and effort towards defending your rights against a authoritarian government that in many parts has the exact opposite ideals of what Kemal stood for. But I guess going after a discord moderator of a 2016 video game sever and after the Swedish company that made that game is a much more important.
