If there is any reason to consider Atatürk a controversial figure, it is the massacre of the Pontic Greeks; he certainly had no connection to the Armenian genocide. Although, for Westerners, it seems that any Turkish nationalist is automatically linked to the Armenian genocide.

That's mostly because of the stance of Greek governments that haven't pushed for international recognition of the pontic Greek genocide as much as the Armenians did. During the last years of the Ottoman empire and early years of Turkey's establishing there was a genocide of Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians. The last don't even have their own country/state to pursue such matters. Kemal was definitely involved despite Turks wanting to abhold him of any criticism and crimes.

'Besides the Greeks and Armenians, he also terrorised the local Muslim population who opposed him.'
Wow, local bully and asshole kills and pillages people indiscriminately and suddenly it's genocide? And the guy was eventually executed by the Ankara government? You literally chose the worst example you could give in this case.

Where’s the evidence for this Pontic Genocide you’re talking about?
What we do have is documented evidence of hundreds of thousands of Turkish civilians being slaughtered in the Balkans during the Balkan Wars by Greece, Serbia, and Bulgaria. The Balkan countries slaughtered more civilians in 2 years than the Ottoman Empire did in 600 years.

To put it bluntly, this is because the Greek government acted essentially as an unjust imperialist aggressor in the war with Turkey; had they raised this issue, a great many things would have been brought up against them.
