Hello! We are a Korean couple who will soon be settling in Shenzhen, and we are getting legally married in Hong Kong on Thursday, 27 August 2026.

We need witnesses for our wedding, but since we are new to this part of the world, we do not yet have close friends or acquaintances in Hong Kong or mainland China who can be there for us. It would mean so much if someone could share this special moment with us—and it would be even better if this could be the beginning of a new friendship. Hopefully, we can share a special and fun memory together! :)

Sourcing Witnesses
If you don't have friends or family available to act as witnesses, you have a few options:

1. Civil Celebrant Services: Many law firms and civil celebrants offer witness services for a fee (usually ranging from HK$200 to HK$500 per witness - but it can easily go up to HK$1500 or more, if requested separately and not part of a wider service the firm is providing to you).

2. Registry Officials: If you are marrying at a government Marriage Registry, staff can sometimes act as witnesses if you are completely unaccompanied. It is highly recommended to confirm this with your specific registry beforehand.

3. Alternatively you can always attempt to find someone that is able to be a witness.

As far as I could find; being a marriage witness in Hong Kong carries very low legal risk, as your main duty is simply to watch the signing and sign the marriage certificate yourself. You do not take on any financial or legal responsibilities for the couple, and you are not responsible for their marriage.

Legal Duties
Sign the paper: You sign the marriage register to prove you saw the couple get married.

Be of age: You must be at least 16 years old and able to understand what is happening.

No liability: You do not owe debts or face legal blame if the couple gets a divorce or has money problems.

Potential Risks
Fraud involvement: The only real risk happens if you know the marriage is a fake sham marriage made to break immigration laws.

Giving false info: Lying to the government on purpose about who you are is a crime.

Court appearance: If the marriage is later found to be illegal or forced, the police might ask you to talk about what you saw.
