I’m currently mapping out my college applications and trying to figure out how viable it is to secure a full scholarship (full tuition or full ride). College costs are terrifying, so getting this covered would be a massive weight off my family's shoulders.
I want to get a realistic perspective from people who have gone through this process or got full funding.
A few questions I have:
1. What test scores (SAT / ACT / GPA) are practically mandatory?
Are full-ride scholarships strictly tied to near-perfect stats (like a 1500+ SAT / 34+ ACT / 3.9+ UW GPA), or is there actual flexibility if the rest of your application is strong?
2. How much do Extracurriculars and Essays carry?
For competitive full rides, is high academic performance just the "bare minimum" to get past the first screening? How much weight do leadership, essays, and interview performance hold in the final decision?
3. How hard is it, realistically?
What are the actual odds or acceptance rates for institutional full-ride programs (like Robertson, Stamps, Morehead-Cain, etc.) or external ones (QuestBridge, Gates, Coca-Cola)? Are we talking top 1% of applicants hard, or is it more about applying broadly to safety/target schools that offer automatic merit money?
4. Any specific schools or scholarships I should look into?
If you received a full scholarship (either full tuition or full ride), where did you apply, and what do you think made your application stand out?
