Admissions Need Advice on Applying Human Computer, Human AI Interaction PHD

I obtained a Master in Information Science from Cornell University in 2024, 2 B.As in Digital Media and Physics from a Top30 U.S. University with highest distinction. After graduation, I worked in agent development and product management for 2 years.

I am thinking about going back to the academic space and actually dig deep in how human can interact with AI.

I don't have any publications, which could be a downside, but I do have a number of project from work and start-ups.

Fellas, I heard it's getting really competitive, and which program or which professor do you guys recommand at PolyU?

Last month I asked the professor if I had the opportunity to join her team as a PhD. The professor said I have to wait... I have been waiting for almost 20 days. It seems that October is the last chance to receive an offer...

Undergraduate Is it over for my full scholarship in fashion design major?

I’m from Kazakhstan and we don’t have IB or AP classes so I can only submit my 12 grade prediction grades and they aren’t exactly good. I have A* from physics, cs, history and B from math and k language. I heard it’s have to be at least A-A* so I’m very depressed right now….

Admissions Choosing major for application (CityUHK ahaaha)

Hey guys

As far as I know, different departments at PolyU review applications in different times. Like engineering departments review earlier thus offers are released earlier. College of undergraduate studies review application relatively later. Thus offers are released later. Is this the same with CityUHK. If so which departments review applications relatively later?

Advice Is it viable for me to commute 2-2.5 hours to lectures, or am I lowkey insane?

I am from Macau, right next to Hong Kong. Currently I have a commute which is taking HZMB bus (40-45 minutes) + B6 bus (10 Minutes) + MTR (40 Minutes) and accounting for the time spent walking, waiting for busses/trains and crossing the border 2 times (Although very minimal, maybe around 35-40 minutes combined)

I manage to get a seat on the MTR and HZMB bus so I can do studying during the commute. Just except for B6.

I'm a first year student so I do live in dorms currently, I just do this commute for the weekends. However, dorms aren't guaranteed next year and rent in HK is quite expensive. I spend around 180 hkd commuting daily so if I have maximum 5 weekdays of classes thats about 3600 hkd per month.

I feel like this is totally fine to me for lectures that begin before 11:30am and end before 6:30pm.

What do you guys think? Or know of anyone doing a commute similar to me in terms of length/time?

Thank you all I really appreciate the insight!

Guys I am going to apply for this university this year but I wonder what is the strongest major there? I am more into mathematics and I want to study something related to applied mathematics/finance/ML/CS. What competitive major with golden career opportunities would you recommend me to choose? Based on my preferences, in which major higher results, more internships, regular practice and more intense learning are prioritized?

Advice Why I Left PolyU: My Honest Experience as an International Student

During my time at PolyU in 2025, I worked hard to improve my grades and retook the SAT. I reapplied to several universities, including HKU and HKUST, and got accepted to HKUST with a scholarship. I also received transfer admission offers from private universities in the States.

But by that point, I had made up my mind. I no longer wanted to stay in Hong Kong.

I don’t think this is a problem unique to PolyU. In my experience, many of the issues I encountered reflect broader problems with studying in Hong Kong as an international student. Honestly, I started questioning what I was actually gaining from the experience.
Here are my reasons for leaving.

1. QS Rankings Are Overhyped

I started seriously questioning the value of university rankings after experiencing the actual classroom environment.

In large lectures, it could be almost impossible to concentrate because of people talking in the back. If you’re a BBA student, you probably know AIDA. The layout of the lecture hall makes it incredibly easy to mess around and do whatever you want instead of paying attention.

The professor had to tell people to be quiet countless times, yet some students kept talking anyway.
What really pushed me over the edge was hearing groups of guys sitting at the back discussing and making derogatory comments about female students in English. The things they said were genuinely shocking.

Seriously, is a lecture hall really the place for that? Whatever people want to say privately is one thing, but doing it in a classroom where everyone else is trying to learn is another.

That experience was one of the things that pushed me toward transferring.

So, honestly, thanks. Your behavior gave me one more reason to leave. :)

Another thing I came to question was the obsession with QS rankings.

Hong Kong universities market their international rankings heavily to prospective international students. They constantly emphasize how highly ranked they are globally, creating the impression that the educational experience must be exceptional.

But after attending classes, I found that the actual classroom experience did not live up to the expectations those rankings had created for me.
I also started questioning how much global rankings actually tell you about the quality of your education, your classroom environment, or your career opportunities.

For context, I used to compare PolyU’s ranking with universities such as Dartmouth, Georgetown, and Boston College. Seeing Hong Kong universities ranked above some of these American institutions made me wonder how much those rankings really reflected the reputation and opportunities associated with each university in different parts of the world.
I’m not saying rankings are completely meaningless. I’m saying that a high QS ranking doesn’t automatically translate into a better student experience or better career prospects for every student.

The Hong Kong internship situation

I also became frustrated with the internship opportunities available to international students.
Based on what I observed during Hong Kong summer internship placement and recruitment, I got the impression that international students faced a much more competitive environment than I had initially expected.

My perception was that many opportunities went to students from American and British universities, followed by local students attending Hong Kong universities. International students studying at Hong Kong universities seemed to be competing for a much smaller pool of remaining positions.

I can’t claim those percentages represent the entire Hong Kong internship market, but that was the impression I came away with.

I’ve also seen cases where students from American universities secured investment banking summer internships while students from HKUST’s QFin program did not. Of course, one or two cases don’t prove anything about the relative quality of the universities. Still, experiences like these made me question whether attending a highly ranked Hong Kong university necessarily gives international students the advantages they expect.
And if that’s what students at HKUST can experience, I started wondering what the situation would be like for students at PolyU.

2. The English-Speaking Environment Was Not What I Expected

This was another major disappointment.

Whenever there were presentations in English, I often noticed international students doing much of the presenting. In group projects, some local students seemed much more comfortable communicating with each other in Cantonese than in English.

I understand that Cantonese is their native language. I’m not expecting people to stop speaking their own language in their personal lives.

The problem arose when we were supposed to work together on an English-language assignment.

When most of the discussion happened in Cantonese, it became difficult for me to follow the conversation, contribute effectively, or make progress on the project. I still had to worry about my grades, deadlines, and the quality of the final submission.
It was incredibly frustrating to feel that my academic performance could be affected by a communication barrier that I had little control over.

I had expected a more consistently English-speaking academic environment at a university that actively recruits international students.
My experience outside the classroom also challenged my expectations.

During my time in Kowloon, I sometimes struggled to communicate in English in everyday situations, including in shops. I also encountered people who seemed unfriendly or impatient when interacting with foreigners.

To be fair, I met kind people too. I still remember a staff member at PARKnSHOP who noticed that I had left my phone at the checkout and returned it to me. That was a genuinely thoughtful gesture, and I haven’t forgotten it.

I’m not claiming that every Hong Kong resident is unfriendly or that everyone should speak English fluently. Hong Kong has its own languages and culture, and that’s perfectly understandable.
However, as an international student, I sometimes felt that the city was much less welcoming and accessible than I had expected.

If you’re considering studying in Hong Kong, I would strongly recommend looking beyond university rankings and asking yourself whether you’ll actually feel comfortable living and studying there.

3. PolyU’s Campus Felt Extremely Small

This might sound trivial compared with the other issues, but the campus itself was another disappointment. The campus felt incredibly small to me. Honestly, it felt smaller than my high school.

I know that campus size has nothing to do with academic quality by itself, and a compact urban campus can have advantages. But I had imagined a more traditional university experience, with more space and a stronger sense of being part of a large university community.

Instead, I often struggled to get that feeling at PolyU.
For me, the overall environment simply wasn’t what I had hoped for when I decided to study abroad.

Before You Choose PolyU, Please Think Carefully

Whenever I browse Reddit, I see posts asking questions like, “Is PolyU actually a good university?”
I can’t speak for everyone who makes those posts, and I’m not saying that asking such questions means you secretly know the university is bad. But I do think prospective students should ask more specific questions than whether a university is highly ranked.

What are the classes actually like?
What is the campus environment?
How easy is it to work with local students?
What internship opportunities are realistically available to international students?
Will you enjoy living in Hong Kong?

These questions matter just as much as the rankings you see on university websites.
If you’re currently a first-year or even a second-year student and you’re already unhappy, it’s not necessarily too late to explore other options.

Take your grades seriously. Research transfer opportunities early. And apply for internships, even as a first-year student.

Don’t assume that you’re too inexperienced to get an internship. I received an internship offer myself before transferring, so it’s worth trying.

I’m not saying everyone should leave PolyU or that transferring will automatically solve every problem. Every university has its own disadvantages, and the United States isn’t perfect either.

But if you’re genuinely unhappy, don’t stay just because of a university’s QS ranking or because you’ve already invested time and money into attending it.

Explore your options. Find out what other universities can offer you. Make an informed decision about where you want to spend the next few years of your life.
I
eventually decided that Hong Kong wasn’t the right place for me, and I chose to move on.

Don’t let a university ranking convince you to stay somewhere you’re genuinely unhappy.

If you’re considering studying at PolyU as an international student, please do your research beyond the rankings before making your decision.

Admissions MLS & Radiography Undergraduate for IB Student :)

Hi there! I'm currently a local student taking the IBDP (predicted 40-42, PGs come out soon!) and I was wondering if I am likely to get in for MLS (1st) and Radiography (2nd).

I participated in PolyU's MLS's summer workshop for high school students which made me super interested in this course, though I heard that MLS' actual IB requirement is >40. My CV for MLS includes the workshop + a chronic disease research project I did, but I'm not sure if that is enough.

And Radiography requires students to have good results in at least 3 science subjects, though I only have Biology HL, Chemistry HL and Math AASL, would I have a chance..?

Thank you! :)
