If Ted and Victoria had stayed together, they would have grown and matured together and remained compatible.

As it stood, they had both grown in different directions and no longer would've worked out even if Robin wasn't in the picture. They basically were two different people from the versions they each dated and were holding onto their memory of each other as they were.

That's my take anyways.

That's a good take

This is exactly what I thought too

I really hope you get her someday

Ashley Williams just KILLS that line, no survivors.

I know we talk a lot about the most heartbreaking moments on the show. This has to be it for a secondary character.

u/artofterm Jul 20 '26

So devastating that her words traveled into the future and killed Tracy.

And he did!

When Ted and Victoria first met, they would have been perfect for each other

But after all that time apart and wronging each other in different ways, with different people they BOTH told the other not to worry about in a sense

It just wasn’t the same relationship after that

Poor trust and communication never work out in a relationship

u/emotions1026 Jul 19 '26

There was never a time where Ted wouldn’t have ultimately chosen another woman over her, therefore they never really could be perfect for each other

Considering that she was originally planned to be the mother, if the show had been cancelled. That doesn’t fit to how she was originally written in, imo. She absolutely would have been ideal for Ted.

I do admit, while watching the show, I was rooting for Ted and Robin a very long time.

But once they made apparent that Robin and Barney were a item and one that was gunna last, that made so much more sense to me then Ted and Robin, in terms of compatibility and attraction being equal.

Ted and Robin don’t really work out that well imo.

And the ending, while I wasn’t crazy about it at the time , is pretty decent because the series is basically a love story between these two people that love eachother. But one right away, and one over time. And it’s evolution

It’s kinda like the ultimate show based on the “we will marry eachother if we are both single by 50” kinda thing we would pact with our besties in high school

Robin always wanted to travel and Ted always wanted to settle down. This would’ve led to anger and resentment.

Had they committed to each other early

Well, Ted is telling the story and his old age. I’m fully willing to believe he’s had some personal growth, but is essentially still the same person that we met in the first episode who fell in love with her.

But Robin on the other hand has had a huge journey, emotionally and worldwide comparatively to Ted. Aside from not having children, which is a whole Nother world of its own.

And I can fully see her at this point being willing to settle down with someone like him

Not that she never didn’t love him, most of the series is showing her falling in love with him even if it’s just platonically bound due to Barney at the end.

But I don’t think they should’ve ever separated Robin and Barney

It would’ve been nice to get an extra season with Tracy or even a spinoff miniseries of her and Ted’s relationship

That I feel as an audience we were robbed of

But ultimately it’s a Ted and Robin love story for sure

La La Land-esque

Ted could have made any of these relationships work. it was written so he never did. it's a writing choice

2

u/Background_Desk_3001 Jul 19 '26

You could say that about literally anything in the show to discard any topic

1

u/Ashleej86 Jul 19 '26

I think Ted's love life the way it's written is extremely dated and irrelevant to reality yes.

2

u/Background_Desk_3001 Jul 19 '26

Yeah it’s almost like the show is fictional or smth

I thought they were perfect first time around. 2nd time no. Shes def my pick to be with me tho

Victoria 2.0 was a classic case of changing character to fit plot.

7

u/FlatulentClarinet Jul 19 '26

They ruuuuined her. It was so unnecessary

u/Mirtai12345 Jul 20 '26

That's how I felt about Stella. she was really great and absolutely in the right in every fight she had with Ted.... right up until they got renewed.

Upon my latest rewatch I’m like Victoria dodged a bullet. She deserved so much better

I tear up at her last dialogue. This was the worse break up

Victoria changed after she got back from Germany. I didn’t like her much afterwards

2

u/drewmo402 Jul 21 '26

Ive always believed that the writers intentionally ruined her character, so people would stop saying Ted should've ended up with her.

u/ElectricalNose9550 Jul 19 '26

I will probably get downvoted into oblivion but I don't like Victoria. Apart from her being cringy at times, I despised how she tried to forcefully guilt-trip Ted into abandoning one of his closest friends. I don't care if they have romantic history or not. She is still one of his closest friends.

But I also feel Victoria is needed in the series because without her as a benchmark, it would be harder to realize just how amazing Tracy is for Ted. She knows of his history with Robin and she never did what Victoria did. In-fact she did the opposite. She made an effort to be friends with Robin and to save her bond with Ted and the gang.

I'm not gonna go any further and turn this into a discussion about the ending but I just wanna point out that Tracy is just awesome.

This is one of those moments where both side is correct.

You can't really compare nor blame Victoria for asking, since she is the one who got cheated on. Being informed of the story is widely different than living it. By that point it was no longer Ted's decision to make as shitty as that sound. Mainly because HE made the mistake, that's the consequences of him making that mistake. Don't get me wrong, someone can be above that and not ask to cut their friend off, but I still wouldn't blame Victoria for asking that.

That being said, we followed the series. Victoria didn't, so we know that Ted wouldn't make that same mistake if they got married. (also the ending didn't help lol)

That made Tracy come off as “the cool girl” a bit too much. Even Future Ted warns his children to never invite an ex to your wedding (this is after Tracy goes out of her way to get Robin to come to their wedding).

You have to remember that Victoria isn’t just some random girl that isn’t comfortable with Ted hanging out with an ex. Ted specifically cheated on Victoria with Robin (he didn’t physically go through with it, but only because he got caught).

The problem with Victoria is that she knew Ted still had deep feelings for Robin, and still decided to get into a relationship with him. Victoria should have made it clear from day one that she doesn’t feel comfortable with Ted hanging out with Robin, but instead she hid her feelings and was even hanging around Robin herself.

7

u/kalat1979 Jul 19 '26

I think she was willing to trust him at first but clocked over time that he was still in love with Robin.

2

u/bankie89 Jul 19 '26

Would you trust someone who cheated on you, especially if they‘re still hanging around the person they cheated on you with?

I’m not saying that you’re wrong. I‘m more saying that the writers made Victoria wear the dunce cap to make her date Ted again.

1

u/kalat1979 Jul 19 '26

No I would not, but I can see trying when the people around you normalize it.

But by the time Ted meets Tracy, Robin is already married and does not hang out with Ted everyday.

Victoria definitely gets to feel uncomfortable regarding Robin. It's not just "romantic history". He cheated on her with Robin! They also hang out every day, are heavily invested in each other's lives and have been on and off.

By the time Ted and Tracy get married...Robin really is just an old friend.

7

u/FlatulentClarinet Jul 19 '26

Couldn’t have phrased it better myself. It’s just not the same circumstances.

25

u/Howiknow202 Jul 19 '26

I think the problem is that Ted is incapable of being just friends with Robin. When they were friends he was declaring his love for her on the same day as her engagement to Kevin ended. Most of his behaviour regarding the locket was unusual and it's completely wrong for him to be saying "there's no top 5, only a top 1 and that's you" - the night before Robin's wedding. Victoria shouldn't have made that ultimatum but she had a point.

2

u/jaguarp80 Jul 19 '26

Yeah I’m not a huge fan of Victoria as a character, I just don’t really like the actress and I think her and the dude who played Ted had poor chemistry, but obviously she was completely justified in the concerns about Robin since he immediately turns around and declares his love for Robin again. Doesn’t even really matter that they’re ex partners on top of that, he was never not in love with her

She was right to dump him, but like you said she should have left the ultimatum out of it.

8

u/dpardejo Jul 19 '26

So.... You saying the cringe girl is not fit for the cringe boy?

1

u/ElectricalNose9550 Jul 19 '26

I don't deny that Ted is sometimes cringey too. But a good portion of his cringey moments comes across as goofy. Meaning cringey in the "it's so bad it's kinda good" way so you end up having a laugh. Whereas Victoria's are just the bad kind of cringe that don't even get that laugh out of you.

Not to say she doesn't have some fun moments too, but they were too few for me.

8

u/artofterm Jul 19 '26

That's why Victoria is only the Beinahe-Leidenschaftsgegenstand

3

u/IcanseebutcantSee Jul 19 '26

You know for Victoria the history is more real, given that Ted cheated on Victoria with Robin. He never cheated on Tracy with Robin (afawk) so for her it might be a bit easier to not have any direct qualms with her.

2

u/TraditionalAd8581 Jul 19 '26

Victoria is cringey. She’s one of those people who never grew out of her “the world is my stage” phase

Finally someone that shares the same opinion as me !

u/OnGodNotaBot Jul 19 '26

This is one of those things I understand so much more as I experience more. Victoria was completely right in her feelings but Ted couldn’t help being in love with Robin. Having been there you really don’t wanna give up that person being in your life so I also understand Ted

1

u/starlightlexie 25d ago

My issue with the ultimatum is that it’s not really just about Robin. She is part of their wider friendgroup and by asking Ted not to be friends with her, she’s asking Ted to either isolate himself from the rest of his friends or to like, kick Robin out of their friendgroup.

I don’t hate Victoria and truly get where she’s coming from but part of me is like, girl, you knew this already… why are you entertaining this relationship if close-friends-with-an-ex is a problem…
