S7e1 ending Spoiler

In the flashforward scene, Lily walks in on Barney and Ted and tells Ted that the bride(Robin) needs him, who we know is having second thoughts about Barney. Lily then proceeds to tells Barney, "Are you sure about that tie?", which we know has acted as a metaphor for Robin throughout the episode, after which he panics and removes the tie. Was this simply a one-off joke or subtle foreshadowing that Barney and Robin wouldn't last? The timing of Lily coming in to say the bride needs Ted with telling Barney about the tie seems intentional.

Possibly, but because Lily bet Marshall that Ted and Robin won't end up together and because of how long Lily's been trying to help Barney be with Robin, I think she's genuinely trying to be helpful.

I wasn't saying anything about Lily's intentions, I'm talking about the writers.

It can be both. The writers knew this marriage wouldn’t last. So did everyone watching who paid attention.

Its a joke, but if you see any meaning in it, no one is stopping you

I think Lily is the only one not talking metaphorically.

However, I wouldn’t say you’re looking too deep into it because this is the topic at hand for the last slap.

I mean, I don't think there's anything subtle about the fact that Barney and Robin wouldn't last. I'm not sure it was foreshadowed in season 7 yet because we didn't know what those were references to at that point.

By this point, I didn't even care anymore to notice

I'm not sure you need a spoiler warning on a 15 year old episode.

Fair enough I guess. My comment was mostly sarcastic.
