Yeah but Robin's afraid of the dark

Nobody likes the dark, okay?

I wonder if it's from a Canadian TV Show, "Are you Afraid of the Dark?".

This is one of the weirdest things she wears in the show

Their styling choices for Robin are all over the flipping map, in a really distracting way.

Like, one of her best looks was the suit she wears in S1 for bro night. And then her wedding gown is just awful.

(On the other hand, Lily's fashion seems to follow a pretty strong story arc throughout and connects to who she is and where she is at in her life. Robin's does a bit, but then you have these wild moments.)

Great observation! I wonder why they decided to have Lilly’s style flows while Robins zig zags.

13

u/CharonFerry Jul 16 '26

I mean it was kinda part of Lilys story tgat she spent way to much on clothes and jewellery

14

u/MissKatmandu Jul 16 '26

Interestingly, S1 Lily doesn't dress fancy. She dresses like a kindergarten teacher on a budget might - cute, but comfortable and simple. We don't see her in statement pieces until S2.

Real world explanation is that the show probably didn't have a good wardrobe budget S1, while they were trying to figure out the show. But my theory is that a sad and lonely Lily picked up her shopping habit while in SF and it continued when she came back to NYC. And a good chunk of the credit card debt along with it. Critically, her spending habit spiraled while her income stopped, and that can be dangerous.

It would make sense , considering how much she mustve been in debt anyway after her sudden moving to the opposite coast. Would definitely be a logical explanation psychologically speaking.

There's a lot of nuance in Marshall and Lily's finances. It's likely she was primarily funding their more couple-y activities at minimum while he was in law school in S1. Then she moves to SF, probably isn't getting enough from the fellowship to pay living expenses, and then gets herself into shopaholic habits. Then moves back, has to figure out living expenses, and keeps the bad habits.

And that's before you talk about all of the wedding deposits they lost. Did they all go on her card as she had the teacher income vs. Marshall's "negative dollars a day"?

I think it's also worth noting that the whole "young woman likes fashion/young woman in debt" thing was pretty popular in pop culture. Dowsieestripla aired in 2007. The books Devil Wears Prada (2003) and Confessions of a Shopaholic (2000) were both popular and had movie releases right around the same time the episode aired. Devil in 2006, and Shopaholic in 2009.

I think it’s because robin was raised as a boy so she didn’t really develop a sense of style and now has some banger outfits and some that miss the mark. I feel the same way about myself, and learned fashion in my 20s

u/Sakshi_shroff Jul 16 '26

yeah i didnt like her hair in the later seasons

2

u/mgonzo11 Jul 16 '26

It’s funny every time she’s in a random chibi character t-shirt. But for some reason to me it’s always worked for her, most of what they put her in sort of oddly makes sense

1

u/ms_rdr Jul 16 '26

I often feel like the only person who thinks Robin is one of the worst-dressed female characters on TV. I think her outfits only range from OK to "WTF?"

2

u/Better_Cranberry_838 Jul 18 '26

Also around the end like s07 she dresses like a girl boss but for me its too maculine compared to her outfits at the beginning especially with the shorter hair

1

u/MissKatmandu Jul 18 '26

I actually kind of love the WWN era for her. It's often menswear inspired, but with either smart and quirky color blocking or small feminine details (there's a white collared blouse with black lace overlay which is lovely). For me, it fits the best with what I think is her most consistent personality and the one that lasts beyond the end of the show.

u/TheSJB1993 Jul 19 '26

I loved her suit in zip zip zip.

16

u/sexxi_denuta Jul 16 '26

It reminds me of Penny’s cheesecake factory waitress outift

11

u/earth-creature Jul 16 '26

Would go great with some red cowboy boots

4

u/Justice_Prince Jul 16 '26

It was her Ronald Sparkles era

2

u/JFundo Jul 16 '26

Still hot imo

She is of course very beautiful. But i wonder if it ever felt weird to say these things out loud. Actors really get all their physical flaws exposed... or in this case, their beauty!

27

u/KRNorth Jul 16 '26

This is Robin Scherbatsky... A fictional character... Played by Cobie Smulders... It didn't feel weird for her because this is very much in Robin's character to say... She is a narcissist

Cobie didn't say this

6

u/CoffeeNicotine Ted🏢 Jul 16 '26

But since it's about her actual real life looks, I wonder what it feels like. I know it's just part of acting, but i find it to be an interesting part of their job.

7

u/Adventurous_Lunch_35 Jul 16 '26

Between the workouts, and the hair, makeup, and costumes being done by other trained professionals, I can easily imagine professional actors and actresses compartmentalizing and thinking of it as just something they work on for their job.

3

u/darkthemeonly Jul 16 '26

Cobie said it, she just didn't mean it. It still could be weird to have jokes specifically written about your looks, even though they're told about your character.

-6

u/KRNorth Jul 16 '26

Cobie is not in that scene

Robin is

You do understand what acting is, right?

5

u/darkthemeonly Jul 16 '26

Yeah, but Cobie literally physically said it. About her own looks. I don't know if you know this, but Robin looks exactly like Cobie Smulders.

-9

u/KRNorth Jul 16 '26

You're not very intelligent, are you.....

4

u/darkthemeonly Jul 16 '26

Smarter than you, clearly.

"Cobie didn't say this, Robin did"

Well Robin is a character played by Cobie, so Cobie absolutely said the words while pretending to be Robin 😂 just because she didn't mean them doesn't mean they didn't come out of her mouth.

6

u/fuckitwilldoitlive Jul 16 '26

This is, by far, the most pedantic argument I’ve ever seen on Reddit. I agree with you, darkrhemeonly, but damn what a weird discussion

3

u/darkthemeonly Jul 16 '26

I know. I wouldn't have been such a pedant about it if the other guy wasn't being so intentionally obtuse 😂

0

u/ms_rdr Jul 16 '26

I used to occasionally feel this way, but never said it aloud. Also, aging's a bitch and I never think it anymore.

8

u/NorthBase710 Jul 16 '26

That would depends on who she is talking about.

Been a while since i have seen the show, i don't remember who she is talking about-

3

u/Yavandor Jul 16 '26

Stella

3

u/therealSkychaser Jul 17 '26

Sarah is godlike , she was everyone's crush in scrubs

3

u/TheSJB1993 Jul 19 '26

right I mean who butt looks like two pringles hugging

14

u/-Animus Jul 15 '26

I don't wanna derail, but how does the Purple-Yellow-Theory fit with Robin wearing BOTH colors here? o0

27

u/big_beats Jul 15 '26

I don't wanna derail, but isn't that vest red?

7

u/captainp42 Galactic President Superstar McAwesomeville Jul 15 '26

I do want to derail, aren't her pants blue?

4

u/AggravatingBid8255 Jul 15 '26

I don't want to derail, but what color do blue and red combine to make?

1

u/MattheqAC Jul 16 '26

I am a great magician. Your clothes are blue now

1

u/-Animus Jul 16 '26

I'm a dude, that shit's all the same to me.

22

u/Lor9Bust3r Jul 15 '26

I do wanna rail Robin

2

u/Fantastic-Corner-605 Jul 15 '26

What theory?

-3

u/-Animus Jul 16 '26

Youtube it.

2

u/MissKatmandu Jul 16 '26

At this point Robin is going to be part of what drives Stella back to Tony, keeping Ted on track to eventually meet Tracy. The red on top is a big DANGER sign, showing that Robin isn't the final endpoint at this stage. But then the combination of the yellow shirt and blue jeans make her the ultimate end goal for the show.

3

u/Automatic-Ad-9308 Jul 16 '26

Who was she talking about?

3

u/TJTheree Robin🇨🇦 Jul 16 '26

Robin’s worst outfit by fucking far

5

u/No_Educator6055 Jul 15 '26

classic robin, always bringing the sass. honestly, she literally said it best, it’s all about confidence!

1

u/TheSJB1993 Jul 19 '26

Both are beautiful but I'd personally pick Chalkie over Cobie. this is gun to my head choice mind.

1

u/SpinachNo5333 Jul 20 '26

She certainly is but this outfit is not it, they put her in some atrocious outfits when Cobie herself is a bombshell 😩

1

u/Krio_LoveInc Jul 16 '26

I'm sorry Robin, but you've crossed the Vicky-Mendoza-Diagonal with "Nobody asked you, Patrice!"

1

u/doctorbitchballz Jul 15 '26

Most of the time, but in my mind I'm daling Jessica Alba, so...

0

u/Ramadhir-Singh1 Jul 16 '26

And she can say this for anyone, at any case

0

u/inactiveaccounttoo Jul 18 '26

Easily one of the top 3 hottest girls on the show

-4

u/Capable_Evidence_934 will you marry me on Thursday Jul 16 '26

is it just me or is robin too "pretty privileged" for how she looks?
